It is very tempting for me to just write the word “Yes” in answer to the query posed in this article’s title, but perhaps the whole question deserves a little lengthier consideration than that.
In early February, Peter Thiel, the German-American billionaire Silicon Valley tech entrepreneur and investor responsible for co-founding PayPal, gave a pair of talks in Europe to audiences of specially invited philosophers, scholars, and political representatives—one at the Institute of France in Paris, the other at Cambridge University. Organized by a non-profit called ACTS 17 Collective, whose acronym stands for “Acknowledging Christ in Technology and Society,” the sermons were not about petty little issues like managing national debt, boosting scientific innovation, or increasing GDP, as may have initially been expected. Instead, they were about something much more important: identifying the Antichrist.
In a way, the talks were about dull technocratic and economic topics like those initially listed above, however, as Thiel presented the Antichrist as being some kind of inveterate opponent of human progress, pithily described by him as being a “luddite who wants to stop all science”—Thiel’s chosen illustration being Greta Thunberg.
On closer examination, Thiel does not literally identify the Swedish doom-goblin schoolgirl climate-striker as the actual Antichrist, just a rough example of the broad psychological type the dark deity will most likely assume once he or she makes themselves known on Earth. In fact, Thiel acknowledges Greta probably isn’t the Antichrist, as she just isn’t popular enough with the non-teenage (literally and figuratively) general public to win enough disciples.
In traditional theological terms, the Antichrist is the malicious polar opposite of Christ, who appears upon our planet as a prelude to the End Times, seducing mankind with promises of a better life, a dishonest utopia which will actually only end up enslaving everyone unknowingly to the Powers of Darkness. Thus, when Greta promises us all a dawning eco-utopia, what she will actually bequeath us is a gloomy eco-dystopia.
As Thiel is a classic Silicon Valley techno-optimist, who fuses a belief in Christianity with a belief in transhumanism, he describes himself as “hedging his bets” as to which option truly offers the greater plausible prospect of eternal life—forthcoming near-future “life extension technology” of some kind, or the biblically promised Day of Resurrection. However, if the luddite Antichrist really does come along and put an end to all scientific advances, as Thiel fears, this will block off one of the only two avenues toward immortality he sees open to him, thus reducing his chances of living forever by a full 50 percent. Therefore, the Antichrist has to be stopped immediately.
The way Thiel thinks the Antichrist’s plan will work is as follows. Like Greta Thunberg, the satanic figure will identify an overblown or fraudulent threat to mankind which is derived ultimately from technological advance, in this case CO₂ from industry causing runaway global warming. Via the intermediary authority of some sort of One-World Government, like an expanded, military-backed U.N. or IPCC, the Antichrist will then offer mankind salvation from this false peril by the classic luddite means of prohibiting all future scientific research and smashing up all the existing machines, thus sending humanity hurtling back hundreds of years to a pre-fossil-fuel era when primitive energy-producing technologies like windmills and waterwheels rendered life nasty, brutish, and short for most of us.
Under the misleading rhetorical guise of “keeping us safe,” the Antichrist will thereby really only drag us all down toward Hell on Earth, in which merciless agents of a totalitarian global anti-science dictatorship control our every movement and action through oppressive mechanisms like carbon allowances, 15-minute cities, and even dietary control of our own menus, forcing us to exist on powdered bugs and suchlike, lest the planet otherwise supposedly burn—a real-life version of NICE, a fictional version of the U.N. secretly run by demons from outer space in C.S. Lewis’ classic dystopian sci-fi novel That Hideous Strength.
An environmental Antichrist is one possibility, but Thiel also identifies others: the tech-enabled bogeymen the “benign” Big Brother dictator will promise to protect us all from might be killer AI, nuclear weapons, or a novel new genetically-engineered pathogen of some variety, with the Covid lockdowns of the early 2020s proving an early proof-of-concept for a future lockdown of a more permanent kind. Many billions of persons across the globe are psychologically constituted to embrace “comfortable” slavery of this sort, as in Dostoyevsky’s parable of the Grand Inquisitor from The Brothers Karamazov, but not Peter Thiel, who is made of sterner stuff.
A first-person account of Thiel’s recent talk at Cambridge University, printed in the U.K. publication The Spectator, makes for interesting reading. Thiel gave his talk in a private backroom of St. Catherine’s College, at the invitation of a Professor of Divinity named James Orr, who is best known in Britain for acting as a senior advisor to Nigel Farage, leader of the anti-immigration Reform UK Party and current favorite to become the nation’s next elected Prime Minister.
Thiel is a fan of Farage himself, too, thinking Reform UK to be by far the best option to run the country, as they are the only party out there he thinks will have the guts to do what is necessary to halt the unsustainable invasion of the nation by unending waves of immigrants—besides reforming the punitive socialism-inspired taxation system to allow wealthy private individuals like Thiel himself to keep more of their fortunes. At first, this seems like a selfish desire; but Thiel presents his motivation as public-spirited, even holy in its nature. If, as he predicts, the Antichrist conquers the globe, then the only way to take him on will be to ensure that anti-satanic billionaires like himself maintain enough control over their cash to be able to bankroll brave resistance movements.
Thiel has specifically advised his PayPal co-founder Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, not to leave his billions to charity when he dies, otherwise that key Antichrist-worshipper Bill Gates (not the Devil himself, in Thiel’s view, just “a very, very awful person,”) will get his dirty hands on it and funnel it toward various globalist NGOs and not-for-profits who will only help pave the way for the arrival of the One-World Government of Hell. Apparently, Musk took his friend’s warning seriously, although it is not known to whom he plans to donate his cash now: maybe it will be Nigel Farage?
Thiel considers growing international measures to close tax loopholes for the rich, such as the closing down of offshore tax havens and elimination of secret, anonymous Swiss bank accounts, to be nothing to do with governments wishing to claw in more cash to fund better public services but just a lying excuse to allow the Antichrist future access to his enemies’ large savings accounts. If Reform UK can gain power and repeal such hellish transnational jurisdiction over the native banking system, then Thiel hopes the British Isles can become a potential floating center of planetary resistance to the looming satanic world superstate, like a giant geopolitical pirate ship.
He is a superfan of the pirate-based Japanese manga/anime series One Piece, in which a pirate named Monkey D. Luffy fights what may well be the Antichrist in a flooded Earth of the future. In this analogy, Captain Farage is really just Captain Luffy in disguise. It is necessary for Britain to become an unsinkable nuclear-armed pirate ship, as it will give Thiel and his money somewhere to flee to seek asylum should the Democrats win the next U.S. presidential election, and seek to transform America into the very Hellmouth of the Antichrist. In particular, the billionaire fears an unholy socialist alliance between the Democrats’ most prominent far-left agitator, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the current U.S.-born pope, Leo XIV—Antichrist and Antipope ruling the globe together as co-regents of what Thiel terms “Caesaropapism.”
Due to its position as the world’s biggest superpower, Thiel considers the United States to possess the potential either to act as Antichrist itself, should the Democrats win, forcing their satanic left-wing globalist system upon the planet by stealth or by force, or else to function as katechon, or a restraining force upon Antichrist, should the Republicans win. Just look at how Thiel’s friend Elon Musk helped expose all those subversive USAID schemes promoting gay marriage and transgenderism abroad under previous Democrat rule, then righteously cut funding to it as part of DOGE; that was an example of Republican America acting as restraining katechon to Democrat America’s globalist Antichrist. Hence, Thiel has helped fund various Republicans, including Donald Trump and J.D. Vance, in their campaigns for election against the dreaded Demoncrats.
Considering Thiel’s views for the first time, they can initially seem bizarre and comical to the extent that suspicions may arise that extreme power and wealth have gone to the man’s head and made him go mad. That is certainly one conclusion many of his critics in the mainstream media who have helped publicize them would like you to draw. Thiel himself probably realizes this too, which is why he has previously gone to such great lengths to conceal his specific opinions from the general public’s eyes.
The lectures Thiel delivered in Paris and Cambridge this month appear to have been rejigged versions of a previous series of talks he gave in San Francisco last September, where tickets were $200 a pop and all attendees had to promise not to make any recordings or divulge the speeches’ contents. However, one guest did not comply and leaked secret soundtracks to the leading left-wing broadsheets of the U.S. and U.K., The Washington Post and The Guardian, which printed annotated extracts from them, so their readers could laugh at Thiel and all things Christian, as is their usual wont.
Thiel’s overall presentation was split into four sections, imitating an earlier 19th-century four-part lecture series on the Antichrist by Cardinal John Henry Newman, and it was obvious how newspaper readers were meant to take their contents: not only as incipient signs of lunacy upon Thiel’s behalf but as illustrations of the greed and hypocrisy of right-wing capitalist billionaires. In relation to his fears about the USAID Antichrist stealing his savings and “philanthropically” distributing it toward progressive causes like flooding the West with Muslims, or promoting transgender surgery to five-year-olds in Surinam, Thiel was quoted as saying that “It’s become quite difficult to hide one’s money.”
That makes him sound like Scrooge McDuck, wanting to egoistically hide all his gold from the taxman in a huge secret vault and go swimming in it every night after a hard day’s work squeezing it out of his slave-driven underlings. But actually, Thiel has a point here, doesn’t he? If an entrepreneur has made his money legally, and then paid all his taxes on it correctly and honestly, then isn’t it his business what he then chooses to do with it, even if that means storing it away offshore, safe from the clutches of AOC the Antichrist in the Cayman Islands, lest she one day become president and suddenly sign into law some new Communist-type measure arbitrarily reappropriating it all?
In his San Francisco talks, the proudly libertarian Thiel claimed one of the main motivations he had for founding PayPal in the first place was to begin “trying to build the technology to evade these policies of the world’s new powers and principalities” to enslave people politically and financially. Unfortunately, this effort doesn’t seem to have worked. Thiel sold his controlling stake in PayPal, and the platform has since become notorious for “debanking” various individuals and groups on the Right across the West for using what is supposed to be their own money to fight against globalist left-wing causes they happen to disagree with; policies Thiel might see as being the policies of Antichrist.
Even Pirate-Captain Farage has been debanked in the past, due to his many crimes against globalism; perhaps, under those circumstances, dissidents like Peter and Nigel have no option but to begin burying their gold in chests on metaphorical desert islands. Aren’t offshore Caribbean tax havens the rough modern equivalent of such practices?
Many of Thiel’s general fears about the coming of Antichrist as the head of an inescapable One-World Government are actually perfectly sensible. It is only when he and his allies narrow this critique down toward identifying specific figures, like Bill Gates, AOC, or Greta Thunberg, as having secret horns that the whole thing starts to sound loony.
Rather than saying Antichrist is an individual, it would make much more sense to say that Antichrist is a system instead: a system of all-encompassing control. Demonic individuals like Greta and Gates are simply useful, temporary, disposable personifications of this system, ephemeral epiphenomena; cut off their heads, as with the Hydra, and a hundred more will bloom back in their place. Everyone listed in the Epstein Files could drop dead tomorrow and Thiel’s posited system of Antichrist would continue merrily on anyway, promising to enslave us all nicely in the name of keeping us all safe.
I myself would consider this system to be “Antichrist” only metaphorically, not theologically, but for an excellent example of the kind of repressive processes Thiel surely has in mind; just consider these recent words from the left-wing U.K. Home Secretary, Shabana Mahmood. Here, in conversation with the true probable Antichrist, Tony Blair, she speaks with shockingly openly pride about her desire to keep British citizens safe from dangers like Islamic terrorism—a previously alien and locally nonexistent danger she and her globalist co-conspirators deliberately imported into Britain in the first place—by subjecting them to limitless perpetual electronic monitoring online and elsewhere, in what she terms a new kind of “Panopticon”:
The “Panopticon,” in case you are unaware, was a form of panoramic surveillance platform once intended to be used in 18th-century British prisons to allow guards to monitor criminal inmates 24 hours a day, nonstop. And this is how the modern-day British state now promises to keep its citizens safe and free: by imprisoning them. Is Peter Thiel sure Shabana Mahmood isn’t the Antichrist, not Greta Thunberg?
But then, if she is, and is ever successfully exposed as being such, and then driven out of office, what good will that actually do? By definition, Mahmood will just be replaced by a different, wholly interchangeable, Home Secretary instead, who will proceed down an exactly similar line, just presented differently via the compliant media to try and fool the voters. To take down the true Antichrist, you need to take down the entire system, not any given one—or one hundred, or even one hundred thousand—of its endlessly replaceable single human sock puppets.
There is something to Peter Thiel’s analysis, then; yet there is also an immense inherent irony to it. If you look at most of the incipient Antichrist System’s potential methods of all-encompassing global social control—social credits, carbon allowances, electronic debanking, facial-recognition CCTV cameras, AI-powered crime-anticipation systems, 24-hour automated monitoring and suppression of free speech online, the whole computerized Panopticon—it is all enabled by the very technologies Silicon Valley giants like Thiel himself created in the first place, as with PayPal.
Another of Thiel’s tech company creations is Palantir Technologies, a data-analysis outfit named after some magical, all-seeing crystal balls in Thiel’s beloved Lord of the Rings novels, which provides its services to various Western government outlets, militaries, and spy agencies like the Pentagon, CIA, FBI, NSA, GCHQ, MI5, MI6, DGSI, IDF, NATO, etc.—the very same state apparatuses which would inevitably be used by the forces of Antichrist to impose their quasi-Marxist One-World Government will upon everyone else, should the Democrats win the next presidential election.
Maybe, having helped accidentally create the very problem of Antichrist himself, therefore, Mr. Thiel simply feels a commendable responsibility to help solve it? But if the only plausible way of helping to solve it is to turn most of this technology off…wouldn’t that, by Thiel’s own prior estimation of the situation, make the very person who seeks to do so into the Antichrist?
And, even worse, what if there isn’t any “OFF” button available to switch Antichrist off at all anymore?
It is very tempting for me to just write the word “Yes” in answer to the query posed in this article’s title, but perhaps the whole question deserves a little lengthier consideration than that.

Prison Without Walls

AI and technology can be transformative to the whole of the law and order space. When I was in justice, [i.e., when she was the former U.K. Justice Secretary] my ultimate vision for that part of the criminal justice system was to achieve, by means of AI and technology, what Jeremy Bentham tried to do with his Panopticon. That is that the eyes of the state can be on you at all times. Similarly, in the world of policing, in particular, we’ve already been rolling out live facial recognition technology, but I think there’s big space here for being able to harness the power of AI and tech to get ahead of the criminals, frankly, which is what we’re trying to do.
The “Panopticon,” in case you are unaware, was a form of panoramic surveillance platform once intended to be used in 18th-century British prisons to allow guards to monitor criminal inmates 24 hours a day, nonstop.
