I've never been a big fan of Westerns, but I had a friend recommend Deadwood to me. Within the first 20 minutes, the acting seems subpar and the dialogue seems... off... due to the excessive swearing that you wouldn't typically associate with the genre. I'm not offended by it, I just think it's childish.

Does it get better or am I wasting my time?

I also forgot to mention, the reason the excessive swearing is there is because they tried it with swearing back in the 1890s, but it was more like actual curses and "your mother is a whore" type sayings and it was laughed out of test screenings, so they went with modern ones.

I also admire the shows use of cunt

1890's swearing?

Yes it is, cocksucker.

Yes purely for Al Swearengen. Swearing isnt accurate, but ramped up to be more poignant.
obviously I don't mind some motherfuckin' swearing here and there, but in excess it feels like it's trying to artificially add gravity to a situation to make up for the writers not being able to communicate that properly. I don't know if that's the case for Deadwood, but that's how I see it in other media.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I think The Wire is a counter example to that. Moderate amounts, but it wasn't used to try and artificially bolster the seriousness of a situation.

That's literally the point. They said they were trying to make the language rougher in order to make up for the difference that time has had on swearing. Things like "goddamn" or "son-of-a-whore" would have had way more impact in that era, so they compensated with harsher modern language.

I understand that. I'm saying that adding a bunch of extra words (no matter what they are) to the beginning, middle and end of every other sentence is very distracting and doesn't make them feel any more impactful. It's just annoying.

If that effects you that much, then no, the series isn't for you. Also don't try watching the "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" series, if that type of thing offends you that much.

Gee nigger, maybe you should try watching a fucking episode for yourself and taking some time to form your own stupid opinions instead of crying to us after twenty minutes. Watching a TV show isn't that hard, I'm sure you can pull it off if you put your walnut-sized brain to the task.

The modern swearing is in there so the dialogue would have the same impact to us that 19th century insults that are fairly tame to us now would've had back then. It's a little like complaining that the dialogue in HBO's Rome was delivered in English instead of classical Latin.
