I know a guy who wants me to play D&D, but I keep refusing because IMO it's a game for losers/nerds. He keeps telling me it's "not just for nerds anymore" and that "lots of normal people play it"

I am extremely sceptical. Am I right, or is he right?

The rules have been extremely simplified since I got into the game and the primary demographic is now theater kids who obsess over Critical Role instead of IRL versions of comic book guy, so your friend is half right. But I refuse to describe theater kids as "normal" in any capacity.

I just play with my brother and IRL friends. We play while drinking, for maximum laughs and retardation.

The "community" is apparently pozzed and lame these days. We would get kicked out of a tabletop parlor for all the hilariously fucked up shit our characters do.

To be fair, it did need simplifying or reworking, I mean who thought THAC0 was a great idea for calculating a hit? I have -8 AC? Then the bizarre multiclassing system, But of course in trying to fix shit they made more stupid shit. I understand you can just introduce your own rules. But then if thats the case why am I buying these fucking books? It's like buying a videogame from a publisher then expecting the mod community to pick up the slack because the company doesn't give a shit.

As someone who has played TTRPGs for years, yes they are for nerds. They are social games with a lot of decision making. You have to be able to role play your character, work in a group, imagine what's happening, collect information, think of solutions & strategize. You also have to be able to deal with & work around RNG.
If you can't do these things I can't recommend it. You will probably just be bored, & will bring down the fun for everyone else.
You also need a group of people you can tolerate. Some people that play these games are insufferable. Especially nowadays since D&d is a lot more mainstream. Troons love D&d sadly, & the creators bend the knee to them.
