So, something to remember, is that during the trolling, the trolls were behind virtually everything Chris publicly did. Chris is very unfunny on his own. Chris does not regularly interact with people on the internet on his own. At best he broadcasts to people, like he does now, and even then, he just posts clickbait and advertisements for his solidly profitable internet venture.

If you do not strongly hold Chris online, he slides off and does IRL stuff. IRL stuff that we won't, and we currently aren't, hearing about.

For the foreseeable future, we're just going to be getting things like the bellydancing or omegacon. We'll get to post "haha, Chris went out and enjoyed himself and looked like a tard doing it! lol!" Which is pretty boring to me.
There are two schools of Christory on this. One is that "Chris is his own worst troll and is always funniest when left to his own devices." The other is what you state, that he's not that funny unless he's in the middle of a trolling saga.

Personally I submit that it might be better to look at it as his most extreme (@TrippinKahlua) episodes are him acting without prompting from the trolls, like the stuff he gets arrested for or burning down his house through negligence, but that these events also happen so seldomly and the content otherwise is very dry without trolling. In other words, after Bob died (pbuh) the Chris Chan show was basically cancelled, except for some occasional awesome specials that are too few and far between.

Chris is better if you consider where he started from. Will he ever become a normal and functioning member of society or even just a weird one? Probably not. He doesn't seem to have aged past a teenager at the most and his naivety still shows in spades. He still has a profound lack of tact and I fear that, without some outside intervention, Chris is one small accident like something important in the house breaking from being completely and totally fucked.

But he's happy and he has a reasonable social life. He shows some snippets of improvement, which for me is actually rather nice. I'm really being optimistic here, but part of me wants Chris to find someone that will either knock some sense into him (unlikely) or will at least be able to convince him to get some psychiatric help or some help for when Barb eventually passes on (also unlikely).

I mean, dammit, he's given us a wealth of entertainment and, in terms of lolcows, he's not entirely malicious, just petty and stupid. He deserves a stupid happy ending, at least.

Perverse attachment, 100%. Chris is like a battered spouse. "She only hits me because she loves me."
A genuinely surprising response. I thought the reason generally leaned towards the fact that Chris was comfortable there (as well as being massively lazy), and therefore leaving his comfort zone would be an unnecessary stress in his life at this point.
Like, don't get me wrong, Barb isn't chimping out every other day. Barb and Chris are normally pretty happy. They're happy as long as Chris does what she says, yields money from his tugboat when Barb demands it*, runs errands on request, etc. And Chris, for his credit, is OK with the situation, because he gets to go around town and sperg out.
Granted I don't know the full details about this so I can't really comment, and I don't know whether or not barb has a mortgage or outright owns the place but it does seem fair for her to take her cut for rent & utilities etc from a grown man living there (but again I don't know what I'm talking about so I trust your judgement on that, and fuck barb for taking advantage if that's what she's doing).
The problem, I think, is that Barb has always viewed and treated Chris as a child,
Not entirely unjustifiably.

I think we can all agree that if Chris won the lottery he'd spend it all within a week on Lego, fast food and other toys because he is, in many respects, a child.
Chris is a 33 year old man who is afraid of his mother grounding him.
I think that statement alone, which I am fully willing to believe as fact, is the perfect answer to this very thread 'Is Chris "getting Better"?'

I actually think that we have seen some improvements in Chris in recent years (months, even), but they have been dulled by the constant influence of barb. I think that she, more than anything else (even more so than the dreaded trowls), is the biggest roadblock in the way of Chris's improvement. So here's hoping she pegs out soon.

I still think we're at an end of an era, or closing in. He'll have a shot at putting himself together if anyone in his family can manage to push him in the right direction.

That or the tried and true state services. Whatever. It'll honestly be fucked up if absolutely no one in his bloodline can provide any support, but it won't be surprising.

in the sense that a happy 8-year-old is better than a frustrated 8-year-old.

The immaturity is still there, but he doesn't act up quite as much, and even if it's "casually-talking-over-a-group-of-people-you've-never-met" style socializing, he's still socializing, and it definitely seems to help him.
I mean, he went from epic, sensational sagas of high fantasy, trolls' deceit, quests for love, and tales of anthropomorphic pickled fruit to making mildly mystifying posts on facebook.

Is Chris getting better?
Are you kidding? Just look at him! Compare him to the awkward (but not frighteningly creepy) young man with a funny shirt and a bad haircut.
Not to mention that less than a year ago he maced a bystander because a cartoon character design upset him.

That is one thing to consider while some can debate on whether or not Chris is getting better in light of going out more, he did mace a Gamestop employee over Sonic Boom. Compared to that back then when he wore the classic striped shirt, he got hog-tied by police in a parking lot and according to one of his charges from the October 28, 2011 incident, he comitted assault.

I think my point is that people are always expecting a comeback or some new, big event. That's how it's been for years. A little after Bob died, I was having to tell people that Chris doesn't just make wacky videos for fun. Now I think most people accept that reality, so they're dialing back their expectations. But I still think people expect a bit too much from Chris. They think a comeback is always around the corner. It's not. The fun is just slowly dying.

Well, like I said, contributing to the household expenses is fine. I just think that Chris yields a lot of control over his financials to Barb. If Barb's creditors (she's got way bigger debt than Chris) start pestering her, she'll drain Chris' bank account to get rid of them, with no say on Chris' part. It's not his debt, he pays his minimums. Also, I think Barb took out a retarded loan in his name to get their new car.

Eh, but that's the thing. Barb made Chris into a permanent child by refusing to let him grow up. Barb gets mad when Chris tries to be independent. Bob hated that Chris and Barb cuddled together, but he couldn't do shit about it lest Barb chimp out on him, just like she did when he tried to clean up some of the hoard.

And I know it's hard to predict the future. I doubt they could've guessed that being a little over protective of their retarded son would turn into this. But here we are. I think Barb's personality traits (maybe butthurt about Cole leaving her?) made the situation a lot worse though.

Heh, and as far as Chris blowing lottery winnings, so do most people who wins the lottery. People living in trailer parks win the lottery and end right back up in the trailer park a few years later.

Although, I think people misunderstand Chris' finances. Financially, Chris is normal (or slightly below normal, he functions, at least). Chris is aware of his budget. He pays his bills. Chris doesn't just spend a shitload of money on legos for no reason. When he's spending retarded amounts of money, it's pocket cash that was not allocated for other purposes.

Lolcows are like volcanoes; he'll dry up and become inert but eventually erupt once again to burn up the world and make everyone choke on his toxic fumes.

If you published the definitive biography of Chris in 2008, you'd have to put out a new edition every month to keep up with all the crazy shit he was doing (or just start a wiki, which is what happened).

If you published it today, you could probably wait a year or so between editions.

I guess that's an improvement?

There's no such thing as pocket cash when you live with your mom.

Unfortunately this is the truth.
Time to move onto another favorite LolCow, I guess. The problem is that, without a comprehensive encyclopedia like the CWCki, the effect is diminished. It'll take years to gather that kind of info and fan-videos about StrikerWolf or whoever takes his place.
There's always Donald Trump -- but I don't think he's as funny as Chris.

We're seriously saying a guy out on bail for spraying a gamestop worker with mace, that leaves the house looking like a hair-dyed bag lady is getting better? If getting better is living oblivious to why people think hes unstable then okay.

Her usual routes are emotional manipulation and threats, like telling Chris she thinks he's going to murder her. Or she'll threaten to murder him.

I have wondered if Chris pushed the wrong button at the wrong time, if Barb has it in her to do something very very bad, and then tell the police he was going to kill her. All in an attempt to gain a more pleasing host organism.

*edit I honestly believe that if Barb thought she could get Cole as a caretaker, she'd literally kick Chris to the curb.

Well wouldn't you? Of course, Cole's not that stupid. (He's not the genius he thinks he is, but he's not dumb enough to keep any contact with Barb)

Not with that fashion sense and that hair. *snaps fingers*

And the house fire. And the taint piercing. And the blue arms crusade. And the Gamestop incident the day after last Christmas.

However, I'm surprised that he made some money off the Sonichu medallions. But then again he spent it on junk.

You gotta keep in mind, when people say "getting better" it's pretty much exclusively speaking in relatives. He's still a manchild (and will in all likelihood remain that way), but he's a manchild that's learned to not trust internet strangers and has as far as I can tell finally moved past high school after like 15 years or something. Also he's much happier which I consider a kind of progress.

As I said before it's really especially tiny baby steps. But it's still something and quite frankly more than anyone probably would have expected 5 years ago.

You didn't mention that he was being more productive in creating medallions and selling them which is the most work he did than his past jobs in his life.

He is getting better in some things but he is worse in other things. He barely understands the concept of responsibility and priorities in life. And don't forget that he has that court date in October.
