Iran unveiled what it called its first domestic fighter jet named “Kowsar” at a defense show in Tehran on Tuesday. “Some think when we increase our military power, this means we seek war. [But] this is peace-seeking because we don’t war to happen. If we don’t have a deterrent... it gives a green light for others to enter this country.”

Rouhani said the Islamic Republic’s military prowess was what deterred Washington from attacking it, adding that under President Donald Trump the United States was becoming isolated even from its own allies.
The Kowsar was described by Iran’s Tasnim news agency as a fourth-generation fighter jet capable of carrying “various weapons” systems with advanced avionics, multi-purpose radar and a fire control system.

The dual-cockpit single tail fin jet is expected to be used for short aerial support missions.

Images published by Tasnim showed President Hassan Rouhani sitting in the cockpit of the plane at the National Defense Industry exhibition in Tehran, as well as the plane taking off from a runway.

“When I speak of our readiness to defend, it means we seek lasting peace. If we lack readiness, we welcome war,” Rouhani said in a televised speech shortly after the ceremony.

“We should make ourselves ready to fight against the military powers who want to take over our territory and our resources,” he said. “Why does the United States not attack us? Because of our power, because it knows the consequences,” Rouhani added.

Last week, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also said the United States would avoid any military confrontation with Tehran because of Iranian military might.

Khamenei has rejected Trump’s offer of unconditional talks on a new nuclear deal, prompting Trump to tell Reuters in an interview on Monday: “If they want to meet, that’s fine, and if they don’t want to meet, I couldn’t care less.”

While Iran said that the plane was “100% indigenously made” for the first time, the aircraft resembles the US-made F-5F jet, which Tehran first received in 1965 and was flown by the Iranian Air Force for years.

“At a glance, the twin-seat Kowsar jet bears something of a resemblance to other twin-seat light fighter-jets.

However, more information on the design is needed to assert what model Iran used to base this aircraft off-of or verify the capabilities Iran claims the Kowsar possess,” Behnam Ben Taleblu, research fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told The Jerusalem Post.

“Iran already possess older American fighters like the F-4, F-5, and F-14 whose operational shelf life it has creatively stretched by cannibalizing its inventory of planes for spare parts,” Taleblu added.

The Shah’s Imperial Iranian Air Force received 104 F-5As and 23 F-5Bs in 1972 from the United States and 166 F-5E/Fs four years later. The planes were heavily involved in flying air-to-air and air-to-ground sorties during the Iran-Iraq war from 1980 to 1988.

Meanwhile Israel’s Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman said that Iran’s new jet was “a natural response to economic distress.”

“The Iranians feel very stressed by the American sanctions and mainly by the continuation of the sanctions, and as a response, they pull out all kinds of stories,” he said, cautioning “It is also forbidden to belittle them.”

Liberman made the remarks during a visit Tuesday to a military exercise in northern Israel along with the Head of the Northern Command Maj.-Gen. Yoel Strick and the commander of the ground forces Maj.-Gen Kobi Barak.

“The exercise that I attended is truly one of the most impressive. There is no doubt that this is the best army in the entire Middle East with troops that are capable of reaching every point in the Middle East,” Liberman said, adding “We are prepared and we are following all the changes and events in Syria and Lebanon.”

The Kowsar was first announced Sunday by Iranian Defense Minister Brig.-Gen. Amir Hatami who said the that Iran would continue to work on its defense program due to repeated threats by the United States and Israel.

According to Taleblu, “Iran’s poor conventional forces are one reason why it has invested so heavily in asymmetric capabilities like terrorism, missiles, and even a potential nuclear option for the past four decades.

“Highly public displays, even of poor or questionable military capabilities, are often used by Iran to bolster their deterrence,” he continued. “Iran’s last public attempt at producing a domestic military aircraft – the Qaher 313 – a purported stealth fighter, was simply laughable and was riddled with aerodynamic issues from its nozzle on down.”

Fucking lol. If Iran quit going after Israel the kikes might sell them shit from our joint defense contracts like they do the chinks.

That's being generous considering they only ever made a half assed, non-functioning model that taxied around a runway, bobbing up and down like Phil. They never even built a damn prototype.

Fucking LOL. This is a factory refurb F5E/F. Iran more than any other nation is the kid whose uncle works for Nintendo.

Bless their hearts for trying, looks like there aren't that many scrap fields out there for them to salvage parts for their F-14's anymore.

Cool model airplane, Achmed. Want to bring it to the White House?

And here's the "newest" tank to their arsenal which is a Chinese Type-59 turret on an M47 Patton hull, it's a real odd mish-mash having a defensive mentality turret inspired by the Soviet T-54 on a more mobile and offensive minded Patton series hull.

I'm not a tank afficionado, how do they really improve from decade to decade? Speed & maneuverability, smaller, larger, bigger shells, more accuracy, thicker armor? I refuse to play World of Tanks to learn more & want the Cliff Notes on tanks.

The F5 and the possible F20 were useful platforms.

Hell the F15 is still bar none the best fighter humans have ever made, perfect combat record (over 110>0) shot a satellite down, great fighter bomber the list goes on. It's old as dirt. Frame age is the biggest worry.

Now if you took the F5 frame and crammed in the nicest stuff the Chinks or Russians will sell you (last gen) you'd have a decent and cost effective plane for a nation that isn't a force projector or first world.

Honestly it's all sabre rattling like it's gonna be 360 no scoping F18s because you have to sell this stuff. But really it's a good fit for the nation that really could use some newer airplanes.

Also dear Iran please give us back our F14s... you can't even fly them anymore :( we can only confirm ONE works as of writing this. They have 6 they claim that does but are cannibalizing parts off each other to keep it airworthy.

I don't know much about tanks either, but iirc, the main things for modernization in this decade are fire control system (ie, optics, rangefinding, ballistic computers, etc), and active defense against ATGM. But for second-rate powers, they are still needing to work on things like composite Chobham armor that are already standard in first-rate military powers.

At least they got the later series Type-59 turret that uses the Royal Ordnance inspired 105mm gun instead of it's original 100mm so there's that.

Yeah their tanks are funny, too. The Zulfiqar-1 was square/flat sheets of armor bolted on to an M60A1 in the "If you squint your eyes it looks like an Abrams" way. Somewhere there's photos of the inside of the turret and the military parade show off to potential users version is a mud and grease covered mess of parts from an M48 and M60 series. It's a joke.

They don't. They vismod extant vehicles to hell and back to try and convince the world they're building new and deadly tanks when they're driving the same rattletrap shitheaps they have been since 1979, +/- anything they bought from North Korea before the Norks got cut off, and whatever the Russians gave them in exchange for handing over all the tech data on the F14 and Phoenix missile (got a buddy who drives F18s and claims that the most advanced Russian air-to-air missiles use the Phoenix's technology as their baseline and are upgraded from there).

But anyway yeah their tanks are garbage.

Eh.

For what they need it's not total junk vs first world yes it is.

Think a semi resto mod mustang, deep down it's a 69 mustang GT with a stock motor, sure it'll run but it's just outdated. But putting nice new tires, a big cool wing and flashy paint it'll get you point A to point B and look scary doing it.

A nation like Iran just needs something that works and looks scary when it revs on you at a stop light.

I don't know if the project car analogy is useful or not but I don't want to say it's junk vs what it'll be used for, and over all if at all it's used the other small poor nations it would be fighting against. If it stepped up to first world power stuff sure it'll be stomped.

I thought that plane looked familiar. It looks like they copied an F-5 and retrofitted it with new weapons and targeting systems.

The initial unveil was so good, it wasn't even to scale, look at this tiny little thing.

Their most priced plane so far has been the F-14 and it's a pretty big fighter jet.

All of this lead to many jokes, like "Qaher F-313 Flight testing"

Many feelings were hurt that day.
