A group of gunmen who fired on a military parade in Iran’s Ahvaz killed at least two dozen people and wounded more than 50 others in a rare attack on the country’s powerful security establishment, state media said Saturday.

The assault by alleged militants marks one of the deadliest attacks in Iran in years and threatened to raise tensions in a region already plagued by turmoil.

Iranian state media said that 24 people, including civilians, had been killed. At least 53 others were wounded, including some who were in critical condition.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif vowed Saturday on Twitter to “respond swiftly and decisively in defense of Iranian lives.”

“Terrorists recruited, trained, armed & paid by a foreign regime have attacked Ahvaz. Children and journos among casualties,” Zarif said. “Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable for such attacks.”

While the identities of the attackers remained unclear, a spokesman for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps blamed minority Arab separatists for the bloodshed. He accused Saudi Arabia, a regional rival, of funding the militant group he said was responsible. Earlier, state television claimed that Sunni “takfiri terrorists” had carried out the assault.

Ahvaz, in southwestern Khuzestan province, is home to the small Arab minority in Iran, which is mainly ethnic Persian, and has been the site of sporadic unrest. This summer, residents of the area staged protests amid severe water shortages. Members of the Ahvaz Arab minority have long accused the government in Tehran of neglect.

The ambush by four gunmen Saturday reportedly targeted a platform where Iranian officials had convened to watch a parade marking the Iran-Iraq war.

In one video posted online, soldiers participating in the parade initially seemed confused about the source of the gunfire. They soon scatter as the shootout intensifies.

“Get on the ground!” one man yells. Images also showed bloodied soldiers limping toward ambulances and troops helping escort women and children to safety.

A regional Guard commander in Khuzestan, Hassan Shahvarpour, said three of the assailants were killed in clashes with security forces on the scene, state television reported. A fourth gunmen was detained.

Last year, Islamic State militants staged an attack in Tehran that killed 18 people. In that assault, suicide bombers stormed the parliament and mausoleum of Islamic Republic founder Ayatollah Khomeini.

Those attackers were identified as members of Iran’s Sunni Kurdish minority who had joined the Islamic State. In July, Iran executed eight people convicted in the attack.

This is the first time a poll has made me laugh out loud
fuckin Amish man

Probably Sunnis, possibly backed by Saudi Arabia, would be my actual guess. IIRC Iran is backing the Houthi rebels in Yemen which is causing all kinds of shit for the Saudis so it wouldn't surprise me if this was an indirect form of payback, in the sense that the Saudis would provide big money to groups looking to fuck the Iranians up.

Like the Iranian dude who said "it was the Saudis" is probably right

There was a roman legion that departed from Egypt to conquer what they called Arabia Felix. You can't find much about this other than an account by Strabo. They marched down the coast encountering poison water supplies. Laid siege to the capital for five days, then turned around and went home.

The ottomans couldn't conquer Yemen, and the British didn't try except to name a port a protected British port.

The Houthi are not innocent here. They have been making cross border attacks in Saudi Arabia long before SA became engaged in the current clusterfuck.

They have an interesting history, but are pretty fucked because their water supply is pretty much gone.

Terrorist organization suffers a terrorist attack, by a different type of terrorist. Who themselves probably actually were funded by the Jews.

The middle east never ceases to entertain.

Yeah, I'm not making any kind of judgement about the Houthis or anything since I know very little about the situation, but for sure the Saudis and Iranians don't care about them. They're just pawns in a proxy war since the Saudis and the Iranians hate each other and are competing to be King Turd of Shit Mountain

Iranian leaders have accused US-backed Gulf states of being behind an attack on a military parade that killed 25 people, including a child.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said "puppets of the US" were trying to "create insecurity" in Iran.

Gunmen opened fire at Revolutionary Guard troops and officials in the south-western city of Ahvaz.

Earlier an anti-government Arab group, Ahvaz National Resistance, and Islamic State (IS) both claimed the attack.

However neither group provided evidence to show they were involved.

Earlier Foreign Minister Javad Zarif blamed "terrorists paid by a foreign regime", adding that "Iran holds regional terror sponsors and their US masters accountable".

Reports say nearly half of those killed were members of the Revolutionary Guard, who are under Mr Khamenei's command.

Mr Khamenei did not name the "regional states" that he believed were behind the attack.

However Iran has previously accused its regional rival, Saudi Arabia, of supporting separatist activity amongst Iran's Arab minority.

What happened?
Fars news agency said the attack started at 09:00 local time (06:30 BST), lasted about 10 minutes, and appeared to involve four gunmen.

The attackers fired at civilians and attempted to attack military officials on the podium, Fars reports.

Civilians including women and children, who were watching the military parade, were among those killed, Irna news agency said.

The victims included a four-year-old girl and a military veteran in a wheelchair, a military spokesman said.

Local journalist Behrad Ghasemi told AFP that firing continued for between 10 and 15 minutes and said at least one of the attackers was wearing a Revolutionary Guards uniform.

"First we thought it's part of the parade, but after about 10 seconds we realised it was a terrorist attack as bodyguards [of officials] started shooting," he said.

"Everything went haywire and soldiers started running. I saw a four-year old child get shot, and also a lady," he added.

All four attackers were killed, state media said.

Iran is marking the anniversary of the beginning of the 1980-88 war with Iraq with several military parades across the nation.

How will the US react?

There have been two conflicting claims of responsibility: one from a low profile Arab militant group in Iran's Khuzestan region and one from IS. It makes some difference.

The former would suggest a resurgence of separatist militancy after a seven-year lull. If it was IS, it would represent a failure by Iran's intelligence community to prevent a second major IS attack in its soil.

Iran has not provided any evidence of foreign collusion but has vowed revenge. The Saudi reaction and more importantly the wording of the US administration's response may prove important as leaders of all three countries are set for a possible diplomatic clash at the UN General Assembly next week.

Who is behind the attack?
There have been conflicting claims.

A spokesman for the Ahvaz National Resistance, an umbrella group that claims to defend the rights of the Arab minority in Khuzestan, said the group was behind the attack.

The spokesman did not say whether the group had links to other countries.

IS's Amaq agency has also claimed it carried out the attack. However the group provided no evidence that it had been involved.

IS has carried out a major attack in Iran before. In June last year, suicide bombers attacked parliament and the mausoleum of the Islamic Republic's founder Ayatollah Khomeini, killing 18 people.

Iranian government and military officials have pointed the finger at Gulf states, the US and Israel, with all of whom Iran has longstanding tensions.

A Revolutionary Guards spokesman claimed the attackers were "trained and organised by two Gulf countries" and had ties to the US and Israel.

The US and Saudi Arabia accuse Iran of supporting Houthi rebels in the conflict in Yemen, where Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are fighting on the side of the internationally-recognised government of President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Hey, eventually they'll run of people to kill.

Then where will you be?

If all else fails, they could make a TV series out of it:"It's Always Suni in Iran".

Place your bets, people...

It's the Saudis for sure. They're the terrorist organization that stands above all others. They hate Iran because the Iranians are Shiite and the Sauds are Sunni.
And it's only going to get worse because the US refuses to unwrap its lips from around the Saudis' cock, but the growing attempt at reigniting the cold war only further incentivizes Russia to back and stoke up Iran as a counter.

I feel like the middle east is going to be what southeast asia was 50 years ago. That doesn't mean much to the residents of the middle east who have grown up embroiled in war already, but still.
