It's race week! Dale Coyne has hired...Jack Harvey, who was so bad with RLL that he got fired. And in the other car it's...Colin Braun, who has NEVER run a single-seater. Rumors are that Katherine fucking Legge, straight off of breaking a guy's back and nearly running over a track marshal, will run the 500 in that car. That's one of the lineups of all time.

Nolan Siegel is really fast and super talented, so at least I'm glad for him?

Whoever's funding Legge had her running like xfinity too.

Practice 1 looked okay today. Going to be interesting. Especially if the thing they were theorizing that the cars were squirrely because the tires are meant for the post-hybrid weight is true.

Perhaps they could try to tweak the diff and rear suspension settings to get it to behave then. How many kilos is the hybrid package anyways?

The figure that's been given is 'about 100 pounds', or ~45kg. There are changes to the car this year that reduce the base chassis/drivetrain weight about 15kg in preparation for the hybrid setup. Those changes are allowed on the non-hybrid cars so if the cars are manageable (they're looking better already this morning, though we'll see in qualifying this afternoon in the hot) we should get some impressive lap times before the system comes in.
 
Track records before the Fast 6, kind of as I was expecting.
 
Good end to qualifying, Newgarden P1. ust cancel the hybrid and keep the light cars, this is good. But gotta listen to Honda's reeeeeeing I guess.

If Joe does well on road courses, he's pretty much locked the championship up. I could see him sweeping the ovals.

Ganassi looked terrible. When you're getting gapped by Juncos, something is wrong. Marcus Armstrong has to be the king of not getting out of Q2. I swear he did that every single race last year.

I could take Newgarden domination, could be fun!

Armstrong doesn't seem great, but man every interview I've seen so far is a shitpost, I'm pretty sure I like that kind of energy.

Juncos was strong in this. Now I'm pretty sure both Romain and Cannapino want to prove some shit, so that's a factor.

The news about Andretti basically telling Roger to sell the series is... a thing. I think everyone went in thinking Penske would be the best thing to happen to Indycar and was disappointed. I think whoever takes over - if that happens - has to have no NASCAR ties. I'm certain the negotiations about the Brickyard 400 have been held under the vague implication that if Cup doesn't get everything they want then the 2, 12 and 22 will magically start failing Tech.
 
Fucking hell, Jamie Chadwick is so, so bad. Fucking bins the car then when the engineer asks what's wrong she just reees RIGHT FRONT, not saying it fucking came off or anything.

Enh, boring race, I guess. Had its moments for sure. They need a new anything.
 
Romain Grosjean running in the top 10 in that Juncos shitbox and then getting a penalty for punting Lundqvist and the tranny immediately 41%'ing is one of the biggest Grosjean Moments of all time. Truly, that man is cursed. His curse is so strong that even his old car had the engine blow up, too.

Not a great race at all, surprisingly boring for St. Pete. Then again, that's what happens when literally everyone is fuel saving for the entire race.

Did Honda botch the setup or are they just giving up because they're about to leave? Ganassi looked terrible- Palou and Dixon were non-factors the whole day. Andretti wasn't much better. Herta was a sitting duck on the straights and Ericsson blew himself up. In contrast, Penske and McLaren were dominating with the Chevy engines.

She got absolutely boatraced in FRECA, did you expect anything else?

Racing is a skill sport, not a strength sport. Theoretically, the physical abilities of the driver should not cause a performance gap, so men and women should theoretically be able to compete on the same level. Theoretically. And yet, time and time again, we see that's not the case.

And since Indycar doesn't have power steering, no wonder she sucks.

I'm wondering this too. Given how every day the Cup people go 'Honda? What? No lmao there's nothing at all there!' I'm guessing that's a done deal. Which IMO means Honda's gone unless they go spec engine, which... unless every other make wants that I think is the wrong move for the series.

Of course all the manufacturers seem to want at least hybrid which I don't (quite) understand either.

Racing is skitzo about this. It's 'not a strength sport' but on the other hand they'll talk about how much you have to work out to resist the G forces.

What's worse for the chicks is that depending on your series (and Indycar certainly qualifies here) if you're lighter while maintaining sufficient strength to perform then you have a significant advantage. They said the cars being 30lb lighter this weekend meant about a tenth on the circuit. They have that kind of built in advantage but still can't huck it. Even in sim racing women are (fairly) rare.
 
Just getting into indy after following f1 for a couple years now. It's so refreshing that there isn't the cringe pomp and fanfare that f1 has.

Legge just tangled with a prototype and wrecked a GT3 at Sebring.

It'd be great if any woman driver would ever just, you know, look like they belonged on the track. Ever.

An entire career of fucked up bad luck.

Tortured myself to see what r/indycar's discord thinks. It's literally wall to wall reeing and calls for class war. They apparently think that every corner of motorsport but this one isn't all about mountains of cash.
 
I wonder when Grosjean gets a break. He just can't stop losing. Honestly, he's snakebit at this point. I was too early in saying Honda has given up, since they had a majority of the final 12 today, RLL looked good, MSR looked good, and Ganassi were dominant (minus Dixon for the penalty, and Simpson because he sucks). I wasn't super impressed with the racing today. More tire saving, more boring racing, except for Herta deciding he was going to send it.

This track could actually be good, but they need to open it up to the general public. Augusta National does it every year, so I don't see any reason why a race track couldn't. Hopefully the rich guys at Thermal will realize that they could make a lot more money letting the plebes in and charging them $50 for a hot dog and a beer.

I hadn't heard the tickets got dropped to $500. Honestly for what looked like sponsor box tier seating and full food? That's okay.

I don't want to get all doom and gloom but it's blatantly obvious that Nascar wants to kill all domestic competition. They're not content with going after just ovals anymore. They're also trying to lure away Hy-Vee, it seems like. It would be really sad for one of the premier races in the world to be forced into stage cautions and OVERTIME!

My tinfoil hat is that they're trying to interfere and kill IndyCar so much that Penske has no choice but to sell the series to them, just like with IMSA.
