If you had a community how would you gatekeep it?

Imagine you've created a franchise or a forum. How would you protect it from troons and other fun ruining creatures?

If you mean protecting the forum from problematic users, just have clear and concise rules that are properly enforced.

Assuming your rules make sense and are not irrationally censorious, but that's another topic. I don't generally like gatekeeping anyways, and I don't even know to what extent you're applying it, are you going to gatekeep those who disagree with you in X topic?

I don't know what "ruining the fun" means to you. (maybe what I'm doing, for all I know)

Nah you raise some good questions.

I was thinking along the lines of things like trans/genderspecials coming in and making the content of the community all about politics, gender identity, etc. The sorts of things that usually end up poisoning fandoms and communities nowadays.

This, and the best way to achieve this is to be actively involved in moderating your community. I'm sick of hearing shit like "Well I didn't know my moderators were doing X," if your community goes to shit because you were lazy and let a bunch of groomers pick up ALL the slack, that's on you.

Put it in the rules that political discussion [or certain political topics] is not allowed. Anyone who doesn't like it is welcome to try making a better community themselves. [Spoiler alert: They won't.]

An idea that the people doxing themselves on Telegram gave me was to create a very visible "introduction" thread towards the front page of the site, which is actually a honeypot where you have a bunch of fake users upload selfies and in depth info about themselves.

That would very quickly help you identify your trannies/identity obsessives, insane e-thots, Orson Zedd style coomers, general problematic individuals, because there's no way they'd be able to resist the siren call to participate.
People could then gang up and call those people names, and they'd be sorry.

Gatekeeping is never done by the site admin. The reason (((they))) fear complete free speech so much is any community that's allowed to say whatever they want will naturally win all the arguments & expose the subversives for their total lack of argument.

depends what group your trying to gatekeep

•hipsters/posers: just be as uncool as possible and lean into being as corny and sincere as possible.
•feminists: if theirs no political advantage they won’t try to colonize, if they do don’t give them special treatment though someone will want to fuck them and you will most likely get kicked out.
•redditors: just be racist until they leave and don’t give into their tantrums.
•trannies: if it’s an irl space they will gatekeep themselves because they can’t function but online it’s basically impossible to keep them out of a community, it can’t even happen on kiwi farms.

- No obvious 4chan summerfags
- No TERFS (Even if I personally find them funny, would be a counter to the no trannies rule)
- No one still in high school (any that confirms they are under 18+ is instantly banned no matter what)
- Be extra careful with people joining if a major political shit happens (I.E election, pandemic, war, etc)
