Still no power, heard over the radio to expect to not have any until tomorrow at the earliest, so that's fun. Amusingly the mobile phone data Internet connection has been more dicey and irritating in the morning/hours after the hurricane than during it (yes I know why it's like this but I still find it funny). Thread loads very slow. Also been hearing/seeing the National Guard helicopters move back and forth a bit which is nice.

Local store was open with generators. Bought some hotdogs. Grilled em. Had leftover chili and onions from a few days ago preserved. Chili dogs.

Clearly the real tragedy here is that I ran out of battery on my Steam Deck. No more vidya to pass time! Guess I have to read a book like a normal person.

The roof of Tropicana field is basically just a giant tarp so as long as there's no damage to the metal catwalk structure that it attaches it should be relatively easy to fix.

I'm a bit curious if the artificial turf getting soaked with water will damage it Or if the wind caused any damage inside the stadium.

Didn't we see someone take a photo of this very house before the hurricane struck?
It does seem like a good idea as long as the straps can withstand the lbs of force by the nadoes and hurricane. If his home stands, maybe the florida government can push them for all houses. They can be removed at any time so won't be eyesore.
I am curious to see how this went. It's not the stupidest of ideas, particularly if it were combined with a properly designed and installed anchor point in the ground. Having just watched this video, the anchors just might be properly designed.
He's likely just used augers for "hurricane straps" for modular homes and off-the-shelf straps. Smart application but not something Florida Man would pay a premium for when he can do it himself. The ones on modular homes are a metal band and run internally through the rafters. They've been mandated in Florida as long as I've been alive.
I initially thought the same thing, and it would have been a very Florida Man way of doing it, but that's actually not the case. Watch the video. Per the video, the guy got the idea originally when he lived in Puerto Rico. The anchors are embedded in concrete 8 feet deep with, rods between them. That actually has a chance of being sufficiently strong.

The crane that fell into the Tampa Bay times building
I guess God hates journalists, too.

Don't let the code inspector see that. I'm pretty sure local ordinances require dumpsters to be placed on the ground.

Florida Man is well adapted to his native habitat.

City itself seems to have fared well all things considered. I don't know if I'd go so far as to say they DODGED a bullet, more like... grazed by one. Still, this had the potential just a couple days ago to be a complete disaster for Tampa so I'm happy to see that Florida kiwis mostly made it out alright!
Pinellas County managed to avoid the storm surge:
Although Pinellas County avoided the catastrophic storm surge that occurred south of Tampa Bay, Hurricane Milton brought hurricane-force winds and record rainfall overnight. The storm took down power lines and trees, damaged homes and caused severe localized flooding – only two weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated our coastal communities.
Post-Hurricane Milton overview, warnings and recovery tips

Apparently the hoodoo was in their favor:
I read on an obese black woman’s Tumblr once that hurricanes are whipped up by the spirits of African women who died on the slave boats as revenge on evil white Southerners. With this in mind, you dumbasses who haven’t evacuated yet should leave offerings of corn starch, sprite, and Lowry’s Seasoned Salt on your roof. Maybe you will be spared.
How does Pinellas county (and the rest of Tampa bay by extension) have so much plot armor to not be directly impacted by the hurricane every damn time? heard that it’s because of Native Americans blessing the area but that sounds kinda wild

Update: friend down in Florida is perfectly fine, just confused why I was fussing over it. Florida people really are a completely different species, yall nuts.

The people who are complaining that it's a big nothingburger, fuckin....how lmao. How can you be disappointed in the lack of destruction? That's so beyond the pale. I'd rather prepare for the absolute worst than be caught off guard.

Is there still the third hurricane brewing? Idk if that's still a thing.
I'm not taking down my boards yet cause I also hear there's a possible third brewing. My last semester of this degree and I've missed so many classes lol.

I hope yall get power back on soon. That shit sucks and stressful. I always fill up a bucket full of water in case the water goes out and I gotta take a fat shit.
Water pressure didn't go out but I had filled the tub just in case. Was great for a cold bath after a morning walk!

Much as I enjoy the dopamine from a happening, I’m very pleased things mostly fizzled out and our kiwi frens are safe.
I understand and I feel the kiwis who enjoy talking about big weather happenings. Nature and the response to it is just fascinating. I am glad most kiwis send well wishes to everyone. :)

I was 4 pages from the end and then I was at the end. Guess the thread is being culled big time.
Hey, at least you can still debate in the debate thread if you want to!

Passed out around 3 after fighting water back all night with a shovel.

I don't think that's supposed to be there...
Finally, we got a houseboat! *yawn*

Now this looks fun.
I love watching people pull out all their water gear and not giving a fuck. Since a lot of people like fishing and do a lot of water activities already, a fair number of people are prepared to treat their streets like canals and make due. Sometimes it's a bad idea if there's downed powerlines but you know, if it's not it is fun and efficient!

Life tough. Life hard. Frens and love make it easier 2 deal with. Dogs and cats too. May we stay funny whenever we can :heart-full:

This thread has taught me a lot about Florida man and has thoroughly contextualised Nulls attitude. I would also like to know if strapping the house down worked. It looked like a real logical approach to me.

I wish all affected Kiwis the best, bunch of mad lads that ye are.

I want an update on the house too. If it were me I'd do a 360 coverage of the house. Also kinda curious if it helps act as a shield against debris by absorbing the kenetic energy if it hit a strap rather than hitting solely the property.

When the hysterical people in this thread see people partying in front of a stormy beach or deciding not to evacuate their McMansion a few miles inland, they start sperging out and describing their imminent deaths just like r/ZeroCovid back in 2020 seeing a picture of someone not wearing a mask in public. Really weird, and speaks to something unhealthy.
Hey... I just wanted to see a selfie idiot get knocked over by a wave, not dead.

Couldn't say either way but I know some engineers who certified that roof were in a lot of hot water this morning. That roof was "certified" for 115mph and the meters say the wind never got over 101 mph at the stadium. The insurance company will sue them into oblivion I'd imagine.

Outlier hitting the Yucatan and another just north of it. Mérida direct hit???!

(yes I know very improbable)
Would just like to go all the way back to the very beginning of this thread to these forecast models:

Versus the path Milton took:
1728603457634.png

Obviously the intensity forecasts on most of these models were WAY off, but they still had a pretty gosh darn accurate simulation of the track Milton took even 4-5 days out. A couple sent him southwards, and one just had Milton fucking off into Texas for some reason, but the majority of them clearly predicted a Tampa-area landfall several days before. These sort of spaghetti models aren't gospel, and every once in a while storms decide to do some weird shit that most models wouldn't predict, but this just shows how accurate these forecasts are getting nowadays. Just thought it'd be interesting to compare.

People need their disaster porn and hyped up super mega deadly hurricanes and they get very irate when you point out that the streets won't be full of the bodies since most people don't actually need to evacuate from a hurricane. So irate that they find a claim from "public health" "scientists" claiming hurricanes AKSHUALLY kill 10,000 Americans per year. It's COVID "wear two masks get triple-jabbed" lunacy. When the hysterical people in this thread see people partying in front of a stormy beach or deciding not to evacuate their McMansion a few miles inland, they start sperging out and describing their imminent deaths just like r/ZeroCovid back in 2020 seeing a picture of someone not wearing a mask in public.
