Human progress has been due to progressives

Human society has been enormously improved since The Enlightenment, chiefly because crusading liberals have overcome conservative resistance — time after time.

Modern democracy arose because America’s radical Founders renounced the divine right of kings and took up arms against England and King George III. They created a government of the people, with no aristocracy.

Slavery ended because radical abolitionists hammered the entrenched institution until the Civil War wiped it out.

Women gained the right to vote because radical suffragettes fought for decades against their inferior status. Couples gained the right to birth control because radical feminists battled against prudes and the church.

Workers gained the right to organize unions because Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal policies defeated corporate opposition and legalized it. Retirees gained Social Security pensions because the progressive New Deal framework created the safety net program. Jobless people gained unemployment benefits and worker’s compensation because the New Deal created them, too. And it set the 40-hour work week, banned child labor and set a minimum wage.

The historic civil rights movement and the progressive Supreme Court under Chief Justice Earl Warren struck down America’s cruel Jim Crow segregation. The Warren court also ended government-led prayer in schools — and wiped out state laws against birth control. Later liberal justices gave women and girls a right to choose to end pregnancies.

Censorship of sexy books, magazines and movies was wiped out by progressive court cases. So were bluenose laws forcing stores to close on the Sabbath. Taboos against lotteries, liquor clubs and other “sins” fell away. Strides toward universal health care as a human right for everyone have included Medicare, Medicaid, Children’s Health Insurance, veteran care, government employee coverage and, finally, Obamacare.

Conservatives tried to prevent teaching of evolution in public schools, but they failed.

Conservatives tried to block sex education in public schools, but they failed.

Conservatives tried to teach “creation” in public schools, but they failed.

Right-wingers made racial intermarriage a crime, but the liberal Warren court legalized it. Puritanical right-wingers jailed gay lovers, but progressives on the high court legalized gay sex. Fundamentalists fought gay marriage, but Democratic state legislatures and the Supreme Court legalized it.

Humanism means helping people, and secularism means doing it without supernatural religion. Decade after decade, century after century, progressive reformers defeated conservatives to advance secular humanism. At the same time, churches and their magical beliefs faded enormously from Western democracies.
Pioneer Unitarian minister Theodore Parker said that the arc of history bends toward justice — and Martin Luther King Jr., who regularly attended Unitarian services as a young man, adopted the phrase masterfully.

The past shows a clear pattern of human progress — of civilization bending toward justice. Let’s hope it continues.

And I'm too lazy to look it up but I'm pretty certain rhetoric like the author's here was used to justify them in their time.
Nikita Khrushchev: "History is on our side. We will bury you!"

This last line casts doubt on whether the author truly believes his own thesis. Is Progress™️ an unstoppable force or not?

Lol progs trying to steal liberal's/libertarian's/federalist's achievements.

Also pay no attention to the fact some of the biggest men in science where devoutly faithful to their religion.

Modern democracy arose because America’s radical Founders renounced the divine right of kings and took up arms against England and King George III.
Wrong. Remember, 'no taxation with representation'? Representation where? In Parliament, which held most of the power in England since the reign of George I and the Ministry of Robert Walpole.
They created a government of the people, with no aristocracy.
Also untrue. They believed in the idea of a 'natural aristocracy', whereby men of 'virtue and talents' would rise to attain wealth and political power unfettered by hereditary patents of nobility or be shut out of commerce for lack of royal charters/patronage. It was one of the few ideas that Thomas Jefferson and John Adams actually agreed on.
Women gained the right to vote because radical suffragettes fought for decades against their inferior status.
Wrong again. Women gained the right to vote because it was convenient to the elites of the day to enfranchise (white) women as payment for services rendered (propaganda/recruitment during World War I).

Loosen your fedora, champ. It's clearly cutting off the circulation.

Pretty sure most of the nice things Americans invented for the rest of the world wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of black slaves who we forced to work our lands and help build our infrastructure.

Just because one thinks something is "progress" doesn't always mean it is.

And there seems to be that "Whig History" thing @Syaoran Li mentioned yet again: the cult-like delusion there's a single, one-way path of humanistic "progress" to "The End of History" - like a Tower of Babel.

So it's never ok to like things how they are? If you think life is fine then you're against progress and you need to be defeated? This is just more bolshevik propaganda preaching the never-ending revolution and part of the reason why shit like the EZLN still manages to exist.
You're not allowed to do anything you enjoy because Pee Oh Cees were probably whipped to death to produce it or something. Also the snarky holier than thou attitude is not uncommon among progressives even if it's not exclusive to them.
Pretty sure most of the nice things Americans invented for the rest of the world wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of black slaves who we forced to work our lands and help build our infrastructure.
I really hate this myth, but to be serious the southern states where all the slavery was primarily weren't as rich as the industrial north. Remember, America was built on slavery until it's somehow convenient to say that America did something good, which, for these types, doesn't come up often.

Human society has been enormously improved since The Enlightenment
Lets track this, shall we? The Enlightenment gave us the French Revolution and all of it's headless corpses, including Antoine Lavoisier, one of the finest scientific minds of his time. On this road of corpses, we have Napoleon, who launched multiple campaigns across Europe, to remake the world in the Image of the Revolution. With all the dead that come with it. This, of course, lead to the dismantling of the Holy Roman Empire, the consolidation of the German states, which led to multiple wars to eventual unify them under the Prussians, a militaristic state that build the German Empire in that image, which then to the first World War with all its horrors and directly led to the second World War and the Rise of Communism in Russia and the East, leading to tens of millions of dead and a Western world with a broken spirit. To this day we're still dealing with the vile Marxist spawn of the French Enlightenment, who in their arrogant and baseless sense of superiority demand the destruction of the greatest society the world has ever seen.

Yes, you're correct, this is an improvement. Fucking Mongrel Idiot Euphorics.

I’m just going to leave a reminder here that eugenics was once considered “progressive” and that lobotomies were also considered “progressive” in the sense that people truly believed that science has come far enough to cure mental illnesses.

Hell, the fucking Nazis were considered progressive until after the Second World War. Until 1940, it was far safer to be openly gay in Nazi Germany than it was in the USA. They also were trying to push a meatless life style in the name of saving Mother Earth and had basically every social program Burger Socialists lusts after (socialized housing, free healthcare, government funded dental care, daycares, affordable schooling- and much more, but your average burger will never read that deep into it because it would turn them into “Nazi Sympathizers”)

What these people may think is “progressive” today will be considered unethical in no time.

Every single person, and ideology, that considers itself progressive has always been very arrogant. So arrogant that they don’t realize their ideology has been tried many times throughout human history and has failed one way or another.

Well I hate humans and I hate progress, so eat shit progressives.

Past progressives supported ideas like eugenics (not that they were wrong about that) which is now double plus ungood wrong think.
No, they only say that shit on the surface.
They are totally anti-natalist abortion-lovers who would sterilize anyone they deem "undesirable" (re:"deplorable") in a heartbeat if the opportunity ever presented itself.

Being progressive these days seems to be against enlightenment values. In fact, often a rejection of them.

The great progressives of history didn't believe in postmodern bullshit where there are no objective facts.

Progressives and conservatives have had a push and pull relationship with each other. Conservatives keep the progressives from going too far in the wrong direction.

What I am tending to see from a lot of so-called progressives is regressive. Progressives used to be traditional liberal values. Progressives today just seem to all be about change and the destruction of everything. With the idea they can progress to some sort of utopia.

doing it without supernatural religion.
:neckbeard:
Say what you want about religion but a lot of charity work to keep HOMELESS PEOPLE (some even PoCs) ALIVE is done by them, same with medical shit like St. Jude.

I'm not sure why this person thinks all progressives throughout time. One of woman's sufferagates main talking points was that "Why are we, white woman, lower than the darkie men who CAN vote?" Can't wait until loss of bone density causing kids to go into early osteoporosis at age 29 is seen as progressive and just to the minors and families lied to.

This entire piece comes off like a big justification to sit around and "think" and make polices about progress (ie be an inner circle intellectual class member) rather than a call to help our fellow human. This person is the Bernie Sanders of the group: you guys keep working, I'll think about how I can help you and come up with philosophy about it (thanks, now think about it while tilling this soil with us jackass). The problem is these types of progressives want to make a career out of their thoughts and focus as much as possible on not doing the work beeded between movements and bills passing. Washington was a general and most politicians at the time held other jobs like farm tender and such, suffeagettes had children and families to feed and sometimes their own jobs if they were poor, abolitionist covered a variety of jobs from lawyering to Christian ministires - OH MY GOD IF ONLY THE CHRISTIAN BIBLE DIDN'T STATE ALL MEN WERE CREARED EQUAL WE COULD HAVE HAD SLAVERY IN THE WEST ABOLISHED SOONER. Fuck off, I can get euphoric but blinding yourself to that is embarrassing.

I feel like "progressives" and "conservatives" need each other to balance the other out, as well as the more humans helping each other the better. I think we as a society can get far the more we realize how little differences the two of us have, and that together, we can force journos like this to their own communist island where they can implement gay space communism while surrounded by reality of survival while the rest of us live in peace. We're all in this together.

The Enlightenment wouldn't have happened without the Church and the very religious Byzantine Empire preserving Western civilization. Christians were also the biggest proponents of freeing slaves and treating them like humans. Unlike early freed Africans who literally started slavery in the colonies when the indentured servant system was working just fine, or Native Tribes who happily fought for the Confederacy.

See, I can grossly oversimplify history to suit a narrative too!

Can't believe Hitler was a progressive, what with his public works programs that inspired and garnered praise from Roosevelt-era government officials looking to Germany to see how they could dig themselves out of The Depression.

Or even his environmental stance!

Who define what is and isn't progress?

I say slavery is progress because it frees landowners the task of manual labor, so they can devote their effort on things such as trade. Abolishing slavery without providing adequate replacement is counter-progress. Likewise birth control is counter-progress because it slows the growth of population, hence useable labor.

Pretty sure most of the nice things Americans invented for the rest of the world wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of black slaves who we forced to work our lands and help build our infrastructure.
Don't call the Mexicans who came during WWII to work the lands while American men fought in war niggers or slaves, please. Thx :christine:
