I can't remember who it was, but some band from another metal subgenre recorded a parodic black metal album under another name and it actually ended up getting good reviews from black metal fans.

The Black Satans are a parody black metal band, but I don't know if that's who you're talking about.

Was it Impaled Northern Moonforest? That was a side project of Seth Putnam from Anal Cunt.

Wonder how metalheads are able to reconcile their fandom with the fact that Slayer, one of the 'founding fathers' of 'extreme metal' genres made songs about Nazi human experimentation, and were actually suspected of being sympathetic to Nazism?

To me being a SJW and a metalhead at the same time makes about as much sense as being a White Supremacist who's a fan of Tupac; not to mention that metal as a whole genre is disproportionately white and male compared to nearly any other genre of music out there.

Maybe revealing my :powerlevel: a bit, but I got banned from M-A because I criticized the idea of white privilege in some political thread, haha

They've been banning open Trump supporters too.

Lyrics about drinking babies' blood and decapitating Christians are fine, but leaning slightly right-of-center? That's just irredeemable.

Let this set the tone for your average Metal-Archives user regarding politics.

The elitism in metal is really stupid. Everyone wants to be the "real" fan.

Watching metalheads argue on the internet about who's more "Hardcore" or "trve kvlt" is no different than watching bronies argue about who their wifu is, or SJW's arguing about who's offensive.

It's all autistic noise that requires popcorn and a beer.

Bloody hell. They must realise that they're alienating a massive chunk of the metal audience with all those political diatribes and censorship. Dave Mustaine would be banned for endorsing Trump, never mind all the black metal loonies who actually are neo Nazis.

They're probably not losing many more people than they would for their insufferable attitude towards everything, though. There were only 12 registered users online when I checked. That's absolutely pitiful for a forum that claims to be the main metal site on the Internet. We have 351 active members online on a site for mocking exceptional individuals.

I'd estimate there's perhaps 100+ active members who use the Tavern and Metal Discussion boards, including the half dozen or so moderators. All the other registered users keep themselves to the Trade or Musician board. There used to be a section called the Symposium equivalent to our Deep Thoughts board, but sadly, the userbase wasn't up to the task of keeping serious discussions, so it was eventually merged into the Tavern.

You'd think a website devoted to documenting music where lyrical themes cover a myriad of taboo subjects would attract scores of politically incorrect malcontents, but a cursory glance at their general threads reveals a different reality.

To get a better insight onto the state of the discussion:
Until around 2009, Metal-Archives allegedly used to have a much stronger plurality of conservatives, social Darwinists and outright Neo-Nazis. So many of those old threads were gone, so it's difficult to tell exactly when was the turning point without tormenting yourself going through every solitary thread and scanning all the posts. Allegedly, the moderators wanted to elevate the quality of the board's discourse, which meant banning a huge swath of right-wing radicals. The resident right-wingers weren't too sharp when it came to debates, so many lost the arguments when taken to task. Once PhantomOTO became promoted as a forum moderator, he actively berated, mocked and even edit the posts of users, especially right-wingers, he didn't like with impunity. He left around 2011, but at that point, he had set a precedent for others to follow. Progressives, left-liberals and leftists gradually dominated the discourse around 2011, and several were able to keep enough of a composure to be promoted as forum moderators.

Since then, the discourse has gradually deteriorated into contests of sneering and virtue signaling. If I had to create a shitlist, the worst offenders over there are Morrigan, OneRodeToAsaBay, iamntbatman, Grave_Wyrm, Erosion of Humanity, failsafeman and much more. The site hasn't completely gone mad, though. Earthcubed still posts there, and his opinions are always highly informed and well-researched. He's a pleasant foil to all the populist progressive hysteria rampant on that site. The communist John_Sunlight is also enlightening to read, albeit for different reasons. Of all the leftists, he's by far the most civil one.

It's obvious that the PC atmosphere there was created by banning a substantial proportion of the user base. It's interesting to know that it wasn't always like that, though. I imagine the forum was much more active back in the 2000s before the censorship started.

Do they consider Nazi metal to be problematic and shun those who listen to it, or do they have no problem listening to Arghoslent as they whine about Trump?

I hope all these Trump supporters have close family members who have cancer. Then they get to sit back and watch as their insurance and medications get yanked away while they suffer in agony until they die a horrific death. And they will deserve every second of it--not the actual cancer patients, no, but the Trump supporters who essentially killed them with their own hands.

But hate speech is evil!

A good deal of NSBM on Metal-Archives has positive reviews, although most people reviewing it will say that they have nothing to do with the ideology and they just like the music. I remember that there was once a reviewer who reviewed nothing but NSBM and related releases and probably because of this had zero points in his point thingimabbober. I think it's mainly the latter.
Heck, I'll listen to Arghoslent and whine about Trump

Depends. There have been tons of threads about the morality of listening to bonafide Neo-Nazis, White Nationalists and the like. The consensus ranges between "There are so many great NON-POLITICAL bands, why waste your time on this?" to "I can separate art from the artist". The former brings me to this asshole. Empyreal is such an insufferable fuckwit.

On another note, the vast majority of M-A is anti-GG. Keep note of Earthcubed in that discussion since he's the only guy with a level head on his shoulders.

And here's Morrigan and the mods REEEEEEEEing about Elliott Rodger.

Why were people even discussing Gamergate on a metal forum?

Wait, I remember.

:autism:

I agree the forum drama is more entertaining than the bands, if only for the humour of an insufferably PC community for a music genre which isn't. That said, I do think Slugdge warrant a mention.

Lyrical themes: Slugs

Despite the joke premise, they're actually good.

These guys look like they'd kick the shit outta you in a dark alleyway in an early 1980's action movie:

They can probably be defeated by leaping through the air while blazing away from two dual-wielded .45s and pummeling them with Karate kicks.

M-A is kinda two things really. The main site which is pretty good actually and genuinely informative, despite being a giant autistic anthill (or maybe because of being a giant autistic anthill, I don't know.) The reviews are often good quality as well because the powers that be tend to zap any review which is low effort or obvious trolling or fanboyism (UltraBoris and his demolition of Master of Puppets giving it a 0% as commercial pap is defensible even if you don't agree with it.) There's also lots of verification of facts about bands, releases, and songs so generally, if you need to know something about any metal release, be it a classic Slayer album or the demo by that band from down the road, they'll probably know about it or be able to point you in the right direction.

The forums, though, are horrific. They didn't used to be; back in the mid 2000s they were fairly good, albeit riven with TR00 KVLT edgelording. Now, though, it's just stupid.

I find it pretty ironic that a site that has such a conservative stance on what they consider metal and what they dont consider metal act like such SJWs.
