The two faced hypocrisy of it all is just what really boils my grits. Genociding christians has been one the most universal lyrical themes in the genre, but genociding jews or muslims or any other group is now unacceptable?

A blackmetal band I really liked back in the day got dumped from their label over a song about burning mosques, as if burning christian churches isnt a staple of the genre, and also mentioned in the same song...

I remember when Metal Archives was the most active metal forum on the internet. Now it's a ghost town where moderators moderate moderators, and Morrigan only has herself to blame for that. And staying on the topic of their screeching about metal musicians being "nazis", only midwits care about a band's political views.

I will admit some of the reviews were always entertaining to read, but the overly positive or negative ones drowned out the type of consensus one could reach on RYM.

I'm glad I actually haven't and probably never will interact with metalheads online, if this is what it has come down to. I've been listening to metal for many years, but haven't actually talked in-depth with another soul who does, which is probably a good thing. I listen to it on my own time and don't seek out to chat about it anywhere, same goes for most of my hobbies, so in a way I have saved myself from all this shit about cancellations and the like. Never been to a show either, I'd imagine people are way more chill at them, especially at BM shows (at least no hand-wringing about harmful stereotypes in misanthropic black metal).

Scene tourism has ruined the online discourse. Plus the general woke infiltration of hobbies. Fortunately I think it's mostly confined to forums.

Exactly. Attacking Christianity is dull and done to death, it was a used concept by the early 1990s. People make bullshit excuses about how attacking Islam is wrong because in the West it's a minority religion, or that attacking Judaism is bad because it's an ethnic religion! Attacking people based on their religion or ideaology is all good and fine, not to mention apocalyptic hatred of mankind, but you direct your attacks on a small minotiry of people because of their ethnicity? Damn you to hell bigot! These people are utterly insane, I can't understand how they can even listen to metal, it's perhaps the most 'problematic' genre out there.

Some of them are tourists. Some of them started out listening to metal and went completely deranged around 2016, like about half of the population. (e.g. Morrigan and Bastardhead.) So the cognitive dissonance of believing in the scourge of "toxic masculinity" or whatever while enjoying Manowar and brutal death metal with lyrics about killing women is just a daily balancing act for them now.

The atmosphere of nazi paranoia is over there is intense these days. You can tell the few remaining users are sort of walking on eggshells.

There probably are decent places left. Even in 2018 I remember there being some good Facebook groups with apolitical discussion and people trying to insert politics getting banned. But that was pre-2020 which might as well be like a golden age of internet discourse compared to today's godawful internet.

You'll get banned on Rateyourmusic if you don't hide your power level there, but you can at least freely praise "sketchy bands" and profess complete political apathy in the metal thread without getting warned or banned, unlike M-A. Community is really hit & miss though. Big mix of people who know what they're talking about and people who don't.
