The game died 13 years ago when the Sniper vs. Spy update made it impossible to get the new weapons/items from normal gameplay. I played for a year or so after that, but it was pretty obvious the game was going in a terrible direction of wacky, zany items and useless cosmetics.

Tf2 was fun because there were known pro/cons for each class. As the updates progressed, the purpose of each class became muddier and muddier, like Snipers being encouraged to do close-range combat and Demoman becoming a melee-focused class. It's now just a frustrating, confusing experience with a billion new items and weapons that aren't easily understood until you've logged a few thousand hours.

If everyone stopped buying hats they'd have incentive to make a new game. But it's still massively profitable so why should they bother? They'd rather count money than deal with Source engine.
