How do I ask a doctorate in my field if there are any research projects without sounding like a dork?

I autistically power-leveled over laser encoded voices and optical computation in quantum mechanics towards my professor, I extolled the potential of a photon medium compared to an electron. A whole bunch of random stuff not related to course material or the lecture.

This feels like a cope mechanism of mine to avoid asking for another job since I got shafted from my previous DoD employment offer because of funding. How do I not seem like a sperg next time? These institutions are based on 100% trust and I come off as a spastic.
