I have a coworker who's son is interested in tech stuff, in particular cybersecurity. I have a reputation as being tech-interested at work, so the coworker asked me about how one would get into the cybersecurity field(i.e. college degree, direct application, a specific kind of networking). Of course, I have no idea, but I told him I'd poke around online.

For anyone here who has life experience in this topic, what would your answer be?

I get the impression the kid in question already knows a decent amount about the subject matter, he apparently plays around with coding and such in his spare time. His dad was asking me if I knew the best way to get into the career path.
Certificates , a nice portfolio of diy projects you have coded , and an internship. They’re really gonna want you to have some certs under your belt, that why I suggested the classes. Tryhackme.com has real life problems for coders so you can solve them and see where your skill level is at. Plus they have a list of resources for things close to you.
Udemy and other online courses are cheap to get your toes wet. Maybe check out tryhackme. Com as well. Good luck 👍

Attend the Blackhat conference and wear dark sunglasses and either a leather jacket or trench coat for the entire conference. Attend all of the open talks and laugh loudly whenever the speaker presents any code or solution. Refuse to elaborate. Buy a couple hookers and bring them to one of the open bar nights. Schmooze up to anyone in a suit and tell him he can have one of them if he wants. Get hired.
