Christopher Hart is a de facto example for the phrase "You got to know your limitations." Before anime and manga became as mainstream as it is now, Hart used to make books on cartooning and western comics - I actually bought a couple back when I was in high school... this was around the time we were still hand cranking our cars to get them to start and the radio wasn't completely diluted with that gosh darn rock and roll devil music.

Anyway, hart saw a big money making opportunity and decided he knew what the fuck we has doing and managed to make a complete ass of himself in the process.

Anyway, I have a whole slew of reference books I use, but maybe only one or two books directly devoted to manga style. In my opinion though, I think it's best to learn the basics (anatomy, perspective, line, shade, etc.) and then stylize from there. Also, take a more introspective look at the art you like and figure out why you like it. This isn't to say you should you rip off a person's art style, but learn from it. Don't read a manga just for the written story, but also figure out the linework says, how the composition pulls you along, how the use of negative space creates a certain mood. Take it apart and figure out how it works.
