How to build in minecraft?

I'm trying to make a horrific crackhead slum in minecraft and this is the best ive got

any tips on how to improve it? im playing on 1.8 if that helps.

I was actually just wanting to build something in Minecraft, so this thread must be a sign that I should boot up the block game once again. As far as your crackhead slum is concerned, it looks pretty cool so far, good work OP.

Break up large surfaces with different, but similarly textured blocks. Add accents to buildings as you build, this can help keep you from building too big. Most buildings have some sort of foundation, which is also usually a different colour.
