Nowadays, for any non-jerkoff jobs, you get a pre-screen call which is basically are you not a retard and did you read the description. Then, if you're lucky, a video conference. To see if you're a human being and not a nonce. Then a third one to see if you're suitable. Then a fourth one on-site. Can you turn a fuckin screw? Can you use a fuckin caliper?

How many interviews are required to make you suitable to any suitable jobs? It's like 4 now. Without powerleverling, I've been let in-nvm. But this is bullshit.

It depends on the structure of the company. The process you are mentioning is bloated because of HR.

They first make a pre selection call to make sure you're not retarded an still interested. Then schedule a quick interview with themselves if you pass phase 1.

Another selection happens behind the scene when you get past phase 2, made with the team lead, and some are invited for phase 3 with said team lead to actually talk about the job.

Phase 4 is probably just to validate the team lead choice by management and iron out details regarding the contract. It's not always necessary either.

This is actually pretty efficient, some companies have so many rounds it's insane.

Even in smaller structures, it's difficult to make it less than a 3 steps process.

  1. A call because you don't want to waste your time stuck in an interview with someone who is not aligned with you. (I don't call this an interview).
  2. An online interview, because you're not going to invite 20 bozos in your office.
  3. An onsite interview, because it's also good to meet IRL, see how the person acts, reacts, and it's pretty important they also get to know the place they will be working at. It's a good occasion to formalize a contractual agreement.
It's also worth mentioning that everybody is not made equal in this process. If they really want you (like if they headhunt), you can jump straight to the interview at the office and bypass all the bullshit.
