How does an intelligent being make conversation with a dumb-dumb?

Say you're smart and enjoy intelligent discussion, and you're having small talk over coffee with a friend who is thick who isn't up to date with eveything and if there were would be unable to contribute anything other than "dur that's stupid".

How could one make this discussion enjoyable?
