How do you award your solutions?

For me, it depends on whether the question is serious or not. If it's just a shitpost, I usually award the answer to whatever makes me laugh hardest. If it's a question I'm genuinely curious about, I usually award the solution to the reply which I feel puts things best.

I agree with you on the two Q&A scenarios you mentioned in your OP, but for certain Q&As, like asking people what their favourite blank is, because that's just people's opinions I find it is hard to award a solution, unless you're going for what's the funniest.
