There are (at least) four meanings of the word. You have Judaeans (irrelevant to modern day but that's where the name historically comes from), Ashkenazis (as in the race), Christians (according to Baptists), and Kikes (synagogue of Satan - word comes from the word 'kikel', because at the time they were so salty about the whole Christ thing that they refused to write crosses and would write circles instead).
With any group claiming oppression the tactic is more or less the same: to define themselves as the oppressed class by forcing alternate meanings for words into existence. The whole 'anti-semite' thing makes the accused sound like a racist, even if it's the ideals they're opposed to and not the race of the person. Same thing happens today for a different group of people with the suffix -phobe.
