How are Highlights chosen?

How are Highlighted comments chosen? Sometimes I'll see a post that is highlighted and then I'll come back to it later just to see it removed. Is this just jannies fighting over which post is the spergiest?

I thought it was a janitor thing too, until I reported a post for them to highlight it and the rejection notice explicitly said that they can't highlight posts. The algorithm passes the turing test in terms of taste, except in large threads where people keep getting clocks from posting redundant memes.

The algorithm recognizes highlights through ratings. Not necessarily the most ratings, but how much or little each rating is worth altogether.

Its tied to a bunch of factors if its a big topic thread posts will require more ratings to trigger a highlight, but generally its mostly just tied to rapid ratings in a short window of time so if 20 people rate your post in 5 mins its very likely to get highlighted.

It's a ratio of stickers on one post vs. stickers on others. The reaction score total could net zero, but still be a highlight because 20-something people reacted to it and only 5 or 10 reacted to other posts in the last few pages.
