An Orlando man who barricaded himself in an apartment complex in the central Florida city for 21 hours killed four children he took hostage before killing himself, police said late Monday.

The tragedy began when officers arrived at an apartment complex near the Universal Orlando theme park late Sunday after a woman said she been battered by the suspect, whom she described as her boyfriend, police said.

Orlando Police Chief John Mina answers questions at an afternoon news conference during a hostage standoff Monday, June 11, 2018, in Orlando, Fla. Police said …Police: Suspect holds four kids hostage after shooting Orlando cop

Mina said that the officer, Kevin Valencia, was listed in critical condition with "very significant injuries" but is expected to survive.

Over the course of the standoff, Mina said police negotiators made contact with Lindsey several times and urged the man to give himself up. They last spoke with Lindsey between 8:30 and 9 p.m., and officers rushed into the apartment soon after, Mina said.

Lindsey is the father of two of the children, while the other two are children of the woman he assaulted before the standoff began, according to police.

Lindsey was on felony probation after pleading no contest to charges of arson of a dwelling, willful fleeing or eluding law enforcement and domestic battery.

In a 2008 incident in Volusia County. a woman with whom Lindsey was in a relationship told police that, during an argument, Lindsey had grabbed a kitchen knife and begun stabbing the living room television, Orlando Sentinel reported.

He also punched the TV screen with his fist, and destroyed another television in the home, according to the Sentinel.

When the woman tried to call police for help, Lindsey broke her phone and threatened to burn the house down.

As the woman left, she spotted Lindsey retrieving two gasoline cans, the Sentineladded. Firefighters arrived at the scene to find house ablaze in that incident.

Interesting to know why she didn't leave with the kids. Also :

Should edit the title so everybody knows it’s a “Florida man” thread

This is terrible. I like my Florida man batshit insane, but ultimately harmless.

He stabbed a TV?

How exactly do you stab a TV?

Leave it to Florida Man. Never underestimate his exceptional abilities. He's like some sort of savant when it comes to things like this. He is capable of things no mere man from another state can do.

If you want to an hero do i yourself. Don't take a bunch of innocent kids with you. This guy was pretty messed up and had a history of violence. I don't know how women get tied up with guys like this. She walked out without her kids. Maybe she thought he wouldn't hurt them. But he looks insane to me. Don't let crazy stick their dick in you, girls.

I like to keep it ambiguous

They like to play nice until they can get their victims trapped then off comes the niceness.

So why didnt the police bring swat to put the fucker down?
They always use them for stupid shit, but when it matters they fail

The sad fact is: If the cops had just run in shooting everywhere and greased them all, the outcome would have been exactly the damn same. And if the police had offered the excuse that he was just going to kill the kids anyway, no one would have accepted that.

The story is so common. Man arrested and charged with violence, trying to burn an apartment down, later gets probation and somehow buys a gun (how with a felony conviction? Guess we need to pass more laws to stop anyone else from buying guns) and commits more domestic violence, this time ending with 4 deaths.

Some people simply need to be locked up until they're reformed. Probation is not the answer when someone tries to burn his apartment building down with his girlfriend inside.

This is why, when you realise your partner is scary and crazy and getting worse, you never say “but they would never hurt the kids”.

Because that’s a gamble you can lose.

Your children’s safety is more important than your partner’s feelings. No exceptions.

(how with a felony conviction? Guess we need to pass more laws to stop anyone else from buying guns)

This is why we don't need any more stupid "feel good" laws that do nothing. We should instead focus on enforcing shit that pretty much everyone agrees on and has already went through the democratic process. Most of the time you see this story, someone "legally" bought a gun at a gun store with absolutely no problem despite their convictions/institutionalizations/whatever condition supposedly precludes you from buying guns.

Those poor, poor babies... I can't imagine how i'd feel if I made a mistake like the mom did, leaving without getting the kids ... it'll sit with her for the rest of her life.

And yet I've known people who were recently denied a gun purchase due to a traffic ticket from the late 60's. I wish there were some way to actually implement these checks in an efficient manner without a Keystone-cops level bureaucracy fucking it up.
