Automaton West: Sequel to offensive SNES game Hong Kong 97 not coming to Steam, developers considering alternatives (archive) (mega)
KaniPro Games recently announced that Hong Kong 2097, the abruptly announced official sequel to the controversial SNES shoot ’em up Hong Kong 97, will not be coming to Steam. Following a drawn-out approval process, which culminated in the title’s third review by Valve, an extensive amount of third-party content was found that the studio did not have the rights to. As a result, Hong Kong 2097 will not be coming to the platform on its estimated Q1 2026 release, and its Steam page has been retired (though you can still access it if you have the link).

I think the fact it couldn't even make it on Steam says it all.

I'm all for trashy, offensive meme games, but if you can't even put enough effort in to copyright clear your shit and pass a review on Steam, 3 fucking times, I'm not giving you my money. Have you seen the actual AI generated garbage that pass on the platform nowadays? Fucking Yasuke Simulator passed this test, get your shit together, Dev.

Automaton West: Sequel to Japan’s “worst game ever made” released on itch.io following rejection from Steam, GOG, and DLsite (archive)
Hong Kong 2097, the official sequel to the infamous bootleg SNES title Hong Kong 97, has found a home on itch.io and is now available for Windows. This follows a drawn-out approval process by Valve last year, which culminated in its cancellation on Steam (funnily enough, you can still access the Steam page if you have the link).
