As appropriate as it is, It doesn't feel right to use hollow knight or silksong as examples of better boss fights, mostly because these devs are not on the same level, but also because silksong came out after.
Regardless, the concept of a dynamic bossfight is neither this profound secret passed down between triple A devs nor was something invented by Hollow knight.
True. It was the closest (most recent) boss that I could think of to what it feels like Bo Devs might have been trying for, not so much a "haha look how much these guys failed."

Its very frustrating when a game you want to like fails at such a basic mechanic though, especially if its something the original game itstaking example of was actually doing properly and when there's a similar release from the same time that also did it properly (nine sols).

Well, killed the Silk Mother, got my spoopy ending, saw I was still in Act 2 and took out a guide. Turns out I wasn't missing THAT much stuff, though I did end up looking at a guide to find the flea paradise... but I wasn't doing that poorly to stumble into it, though likely saved myself some hours of bumbling around. Killed Silk Mother again (she was stupidly easy the second time, most of the optional bosses are meaner), set the trap and now everything is shit. Kind of regretting not getting the last few fleas and check a guide for mask shards while I still had full access to transport, but my last auto save rollback is 4 hours of gameplay and fuck that shit. I'm still enjoying the game and I do hope I get some cooler visuals, in that sense Hollow Knight was stronger, I'm missing an Abyss area or something as oppressive as deep nest.
If that's how you wish to play that's fine. But the game does not ask for much. Tons of SNES era games were way harder, and it's not like Silksong is only enjoyable for its difficulty (as if that was ever any game's selling point.) It's certainly challenging, but the amazing soundtrack and bosses make it worth it. Honestly I think Mount Fey is the worst area however, Bilewater has a better soundtrack and the runback is only horrid if you don't look for that hidden bench.
I blame my NES and SNES roots. Mount Fey was hard, but didn't make me despair, but I definitely thought to myself more than once "I pity the sucker that doesn't have good platformer instincts that has to do this to get the fucking double jump of all things". Bilewater on the other hand had me raging, and I was not aware there was any hidden bench, so I would do the runback, park in one of the areas to farm little floating things to purge the rot from me which was a good half minute of wasting time and then run up again. And that boss is just wretched, though I did at least get good at clearing the wave. Also learned to love the shell drills with the double tool upgrade.

I think ive done most wishes and the only bosses ive not done are dicks but im worried about missing stuff if I go into the lace fight. I feel I should grab mask pieces and stuff too before I progress

from what I read, there are no missables outside of the witch ending and possibly some duels with friendly npcs. And you can fight Lace with no fear. It's the boss fight after that one that would trigger act and the option only appears after you complete a certain wish. I'm only at the start of act 3 and I know dick of the consequences outside of my immediate fast travel not being accessible, so if just for that you wish to hunt at least for mask pieces, it sounds like a plan to me. I'm missing 7 and kind of regret not going after at least 3

It's funny, when I first saw these things they looked pretty intimidating like maybe the Husk Sentry's or similar from the first game, but now they're barely even a blip on the radar. :story:

This game is great. I remember around the 90 hour mark accidentally hitting dash while clinging against a wall and discovering that it causes you to clamber slightly upwards, thus opening up all new ways for me to engage in wall-based combat. I like how I could have potentially gone the whole game without discovering that.

Ngl husk sentries are kind of a joke in the Hollow knight too, they don't get even close to the aggressivity of grand reed eithers, since they do not chase you nor fly away.
Generally speaking Silksong is all about playing fast and aggressive, even more than the original Hollow Knight does.

I hate myself for having to look at a guide to see how to beat these bastards, It isn't even that I forgot about the needolin like a lot of other people, you need to play for much longer than any other enemy to trigger them.

Its even more interesting when you consider bosses like Broodmother that are designed with the wall jump in mind, specifically when you are cornered and she's about to leap at you.

I've been watching my wife play through the game. She really likes Garmond when he pops up. She just recently got to Act 3. I'm not looking forward to what is inevitably going to happen.

Quick question: How and where can I get upgrade materials for the needle outside of doing that quest to get all the food and shit?

I've upgraded it once. The part of the Deep Docks locked behind the key door whooped my ass. Figure it's best I upgrade it.

You can get one at Whispering Vaults. It's in a large room with lots of boxes that you have to push

1 is accessed from the Whispering vaults.
1 is from the "great taste of Pharloom" quest, which tbh is not that bad a delivery
1 is in act 3 and requires all fleas rescued
But I can't get good enough for Crust King's gauntlet run shortcut rn.
I suggest you either a spell-focused build (Silkstorm/Cross stitch + volt filament + lantern) for high dps and crowd control.
Or better yet a red tool focused build (Architect + cogfly + pollip pouch + voltvessel), since tool damage scales with crafting kits rather than needle.
Reserve bind should also help.
