True, Western culture is not a monolithic entity shaped by a single book, or even set of books. But, these ponderous books have exerted and still exert a massive influence on Western culture. And, if you want to convince anyone to abandon that cultural outlook, you will have to engage with the ideas and arguments found in those books, since they have entrenched themselves in our collective outlook.

And for the record, while I am having a laugh and being unnecessarily dickish about referencing ponderous books, I have read them all. If you want to have a real discussion about these contradictions and the effect they have had on how our societies are organized, I can and will. What I doubt is that you have put forth the effort to acquire the necessary background of knowledge to have that discussion.

For the record, if you want to start acquiring that background, I would recommend you start with Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra. His idea of the "will to power" seems close to your ideal (as far as I understand it) of masculinity asserting itself upon its surroundings.

I like the enlightenment period, for example. But it didn't stand for fascism like modern progressivism does. I like most of their values. But if you think that modern societies respect them look around you a bit better.

I won't deny that I am pretentious, but I'd rather be pretentious than ignorant.

Secondly, I'm not defending anything. The reason I am referencing various authors from various centuries is precisely because you are right. Western culture isn't monolithic: It is the product of all those centuries and all those ideas/events. So you have to try and take into account as much of that rich, complicated history of ideas as you can in order to understand it.

What do you like about the Enlightenment? What values are you referring to?
