In terms of worldbuilding, I think it’s important to recognize that most people’s knowledge of Harry Potter comes solely from the movies, which…aren’t that good, to be honest. The books are much more detailed, and Rowling has added a ton of information (for instance, such as why wizards don’t use electronics) on her websites over the years in response to fan inquiries. Now, there are some big gaps — the economy and medicine are on really shaky ground still, to be honest — but every new piece of media gives more information. I particularly enjoyed the way the Wizarding World chooses its leader, which is not done through an election but rather with the approval of a magical creature.
Nah the films were amazing in making the setting vibrant and interesting. They didn't go autistic in detail but that added to the "magic" of the setting.

Actually that can be a cool writing technique, write an autistic explanation of the world and don't let anyone know about it.

Since all their other "brilliant" plans against this game and its fans failed and the one Vtuber streamer girl they harassed to tears came back and explicitly told them to eat shit, their next fool-proof plan is to literally pull a Byuu and say some troon vtuber an-hero'd. Naturally it's the fault of Rowling, the vtuber girl, and everyone else who finally hit peak trans and told them to go dilate. Oh but don't ask for proof or anything, just trust them and let them grieve in peace.

The game's day and night cycle is extremely jarring. It feels like the game will jump from morning to night in a matter of minutes which is very odd and awkward to play through. The game also states curfew is enforced, but your character isn't punished for wandering the castle at night.

2. I don't want this game to be Grand Theft Auto with wands, but I think that allowing the player to disturb the peace or do something asinine to people in the castle would make the simulation feel a bit more real. This could be a fail state if the player is caught and apprehended which would be fine, but it's making the game feel subjectively plastic which is a bit of a missed opportunity to me. It's nothing that major and I get why they didn't want to do that, but it would be kind of cool.
This was cut content, a lot of which is still left in the files. There was originally going to be a punishment system leading to detentions if you misbehaved at school and aurors would pursue you beyond castle grounds if you fucked about too much.

Both of these were cut, probably because the devs wanted to appeal to as casual an audience as possible.

I am so glad the troons shrieked about this and convinced me to get this game. I get why some people around here say its "meh", in that the actual combat mechanics and so on are basic bitch, and the barrier to entry for play is low. Unlike glorious Souls Like master race games that actively punish the unworthy.

That said, I don't really like Souls games. I approach RPG's like I approach a good book. I want a nice story and a world to immerse myself in. The gameplay mechanics themselves are simply tools to getting the story to unfold. In that respect, this game hits all the right buttons for me. I've just spent 2 hours just wandering around Hogwarts Castle looking at everything and trying to find hidden secrets/lore.

Like, did you know in the last stall of the girls bathroom there is a full blown Meth Lab? I mean...potion brewing kit....

This is great. It hearkens back to a time when the goal of video games was to create an immersive experience in another world, rather then serve as seminars on Marxist Social Theory and excessive monetization.

I beat the game and I need to bitch about something

FFS I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA WELD THE EMO POWER ISEDORA GATHERED AND SAVE ANNE BUT NOTHING FUCKING HAPPENED. CHOICES MEAN NOTHING IN THIS GAME. HIS STORY WAS SO NIFTY AND THEN IT FIZZLED AND DIED WTF

Fun but no consequence or reward for anything. Had so much more potential storywise. I would pay DLC money to get more story but they have no DLC plans. Fucking gay.

So much build up for nothing. I guess Poppy's quest were the most satisfying. World exploring is tits though. Also room of requirement and beast stuff was fun.

Kinda pissed and not satisfied by the end though.

Yeah, story's insanely weak and you get no choices but at least you can tell people to fuck off and/or just keep the shit they sent you to get so it's leagues above anything Bethesda/Ubisoft has done lately. Baby steps and all that but at least it's something.

Just did the final battle, and why does every game go with: You've been doing so well, here's this insane enemy that's simply going to slaughter you. I got through the first 1/3, then realized I would never have enough potions so I just switched to story mode to finish it as having to perfectly dodge continuously is not fun to me. Dodge, try and find spell not on cooldown, basic attack, remove 0.00001% of health, rinse, repeat.

Between the crack and me finding a nice batch of mods in the farms to remove all of the jarring diversity as well as cast the tranny begone spell, I'm having a crack at it as well. Did I gimp my experience in any way going with a Ravenclaw?

As for performance, I have it at medium with a GTX 1060 6GB card, so looks decent enough, but I only play in 1080p and I'm not too particular about graphical quality, so falls into "good enough" for me. I can more than understand that anybody with a real machine would be pissed with crap performance.

I'd say it's also up there with Capcom and Squeenix's shitty writing. Yet unlike Bethesda, Ubisoft, Capcom or Squeenix, the gameplay is still fun.

potions are weak as far as I can tell, effects last too damn short and you spend most of the potion time getting another damn potion on your action bar (at least on console)

vegetables are where it's at, get all the stat bonus gear for plants and then just drop cabbages and mandrakes and ancient magic and wooo.

As far as I can see the house differences are very minor, and the main thing is some dialogue differences when interacting with other characters from your house. And I guess the house robe.

Unfortunately the house choice seems to have absolutely zero affect on anything in the game beyond what common room you can go into. But there's probably a mod for that, too.

Rewatched the movies on a lark and I have to say: the games story sucks ass in hindsight. The books and movies, even if their individual stories are basic, had a lot of interesting diversity between each installment:
1 was an Indiana Jones style bank heist
2 was essentially a murder mystery
3 was a Gothic horror thriller
4 was a Shonen sports tournament ark
But 5 onward was where it kinda devolves into a homogenous soups of wizarding politics which unfortunately is what the game tried to emulate.

Why copy the least iconic, most boring parts of the series? Having a whole gang of team pocket goblinos and fashion victims fight me in open fields isn't as interesting as, say, a single psycho murderer stalking me through the castle at night.

This news broke same day as the Empress crack so I didn't discover it until today:

Leading speedrunning event bans Hogwarts Legacy and all other Harry Potter games from future events

Hogwarts Legacy has joined Games Done Quick's 'Disallowed Games' list

Speedrunning charity event, Games Done Quick, has banned Hogwarts Legacy from appearing during any of its future events.

As spotted by TheGamer(opens in new tab), the recently released Harry Potter game has been added to Games Done Quick's 'Disallowed Games' list, meaning it cannot be submitted for consideration and won't appear during future event streams. According to Games Done Quick's website(opens in new tab), Hogwarts Legacy and all of the other games on the list "have content, views, or an origin that we have deemed unsuitable for our stream."

It isn't just Hogwarts Legacy that has been banned from the event, all other games in the Harry Potter series are now also not allowed to be submitted - however, this is "subject to further review in the future." The Warner Bros. game is just one of several that the Games Done Quick team doesn't want to see, including Games with an ESRB rating of Adults Only, the Five Nights at Freddy's Series, and God of War (2005).

Games Done Quick previously hosted Summer Games Done Quick 2022, which raised over $3 million for the medical charity Doctors Without Borders. Prior to this, the event raised $2.7 million for the organization Prevent Cancer during Awesome Games Done Quick in January 2021.

The next thing planned by Games Done Quick is the "all-women speedrunning event" Frost Fatales, which is set to take place from February 26 - March 4, 2023, and will be raising money for the Malala Fund.

It's not surprising that Games Done Quick has kept its distance from Hogwarts Legacy. Last month, major gaming forum Resetera also issued a total ban on discussion of Hogwarts Legacy, expanding on its previous rules which said that users could only discuss the game's promotional material in a single, ongoing thread.

The release of Hogwarts Legacy has been the subject of criticism and debate due to J.K. Rowling's public stance on gender identity, which continues to challenge the inclusivity at the heart of the Harry Potter community. Here is our explainer on the Hogwarts Legacy controversy.

I was just talking story there, everything else is very good, the world is gorgeous and they put a lot of effort into the little details. Gameplay really is pretty good and all the unlocks make sense and don't take a lot of time out of your journey when you're just passing by. Most of the complaints I have about the game at all are the meta things, the Denuvo, the performance, the console exclusive shit.

Things I don't actually like in game is the lockpicking minigame just wasting time, there is no failure point, you don't expend things it's just wasting your time for no good reason except well other open world games have 'em so gotta do that. Talent tree is also tacked on and meaningless. I'm nitpicking here mostly and I'm sure if and when this gets DLC and sequels those things will get smoothed out and improved so looking forward to that.

Edit: and the shitty character creator, they can do way better.

I was literally just talking about the story.
Yeah, safe bet the "all-women" is at least 75% dudes in wigs.
And wearing mom's makeup.

Shame about the story, but the characters seem OK from what little I've played so far. I've had fun telling the more uptight students to go fuck themselves and that I won't tell them how to solve puzzles they set me.
