I hear you but indeed the first part of the comment sums up why these things happened. But keep in mind we're looking through the lens of history. If we'd been there at that time chances are we'd feel the same way toward the Japanese.

In contrast, the war with Germany was relatively clean, at least for the US/UK. Both sides had signed and lived up to the Geneva Convention, unlike Japan and the USSR. Both sides tended to fight hard, but pretty cleanly. Germans would surrender when there was no longer any point in fighting, as did US/UK troops. At least among Americans, the level of hate toward Germany and the Germans was rather low until the concentration camps were liberated.

The German war with Russia was entirely different. Nothing short of horrid. Almost no holds barred, no quarter given. What the Germans did to the USSR, the USSR did to the Germans. NFG for the Germans. Brought it on themselves.

Germany had seen China as a valuable market for military and industrial goods after the end of WWI. This continued well into the period of rising Japan-China tensions in the 1930s and even for a short period after the formal signing of the alliance between Germany and Japan in 1936.

The falling soldier, a photograph by Robert Capa (one of the founders of Magnum Photos). The soldier is shown collapsing backward after being fatally shot in the head. Is claimed to have taken on September 5, 1936, during the battle of Cerro Muriano in the Spanish Civil War. The photograph is considered an iconic image of the XX century.

Pretty sure that photo were revealed to have been staged.

March 11th 2004 in Madrid at 07:36 am. I could be wrong that this image is historical, but it's been 15 years since this massacre shocked Spaniard society, a kinda long time.
You can see the aftermath of a jihadist terrorist attack on innocent people, 193 people died on this event, the worst attack of this kind in Europe.
Some cowards decided, that in order to fulfill the wishes of their cruel god, they must blew up themselves and murder almost 200 people and more that were damaged badly and injured for life. It could have been far more worse as they planned to bomb the central station, Atocha, with dynamite according to one boss I had.
All of these victims were just workers and students, fathers and mothers going to work to feed their kids, students whose only crime was that they might missed some classes, grandparents who just were minding their business and expected that in the afternoon, after the grandkids were out of school, went to visit their beloved families and take care of their grandkids. 193 people who left broken families behind and a lot of tears, mothers and dads lost their kids, children lost their parents and students who will complete their degrees in heaven.
I might be very emotional for this post, but this happened in my home city, 15 minutes in car from my neighborhood. 15 years later and you can kind of feel the chill from walking in Atocha and travelling in train.
This tragedy created a lot of conspiracy theories around this matter, some say that this was made by the opposition, the PSOE, in order to win the elections that took over 3 days later. Nobody knows the truth, the most reasonable version is that jihadists killed because they were angry that Spain participated in the invasion of Irak.
May these innocents be safe in heaven.

The German military advisers were recalled in May 1938, 10 months after the official start of war between Japan and China.
From what I've read, the German-trained divisions fought well in the early years of the war against the Japanese, but their limited numbers meant they were unable to stem the tide of Japanese advances. After suffering continued troop losses and retreats, several of the divisions were reorganized and absorbed into other groups in the Chinese army, while some others survived (at a fraction of their initial strength) to fight Mao's forces after Japan was defeated.

Simo Häyhä, the "White Death"

This image was taken during the Winter War of 1940.

Simo is believed to be the deadliest Sniper in military history, with 259 confirmed kills (although Simo strongly believed he had killed double that number). Standing at only 5ft 3 inches, he was a successful skier and huntsman before joining the army. He had no prior training with scoped rifles, and preferred to use iron sights.

Used as a propaganda tool by the Finnish military, the Red Army attempted to kill him several times during the course of the war. In one instance his face was "blown in half" by an explosive round fired by a Soviet sniper. He survived (though was badly disfigured) and went on to receive the 1st Class Medal of Liberty. After the war, Simo had a successful career as a moose hunter and dog breeder. He died in a veteran's nursing home on the 1st of April 2002, aged 96.

That photograph, frequently goes along with Simo, but in reality, several books title it as "A Swedish volunteer in the Winter War. Northern Finland, February 20, 1940"

This is consistent, because Simo was not at the north, but in Karelia. Also, all his kills were with issued SAKO Mosin Nagant, which this rifle is not.

It really can't be understated how insanely skilled he was. The Russians would send death squads to eliminate this one man, who would proceed to kill them all. You couldn't even make this shit into a movie since it would be too unbelievable to have this one sniper with no sniper scope kill that many enemies by himself.

I am not pissing on this dude, who is plain hardcore and brave, but Simo's most kills were racked during a short period of three months, during a substantially large operation when Soviets moved troops (40% of which did not go through basic training) and had no camo. After '30s, most experienced commanders were sent to Gulag. In '1939, were sending wave after wave of people over deep snow, in dark uniforms, over open fields. The slaughter was great and senseless, however the population of Moscow was more than entire population of Finland. There were plenty of people.


After Finns signed armistice in Kremlin, a lot of people on the streets of Finland walked crying reading the conditions of surrender (10% of Finland)

The reality is, snipers don't last. Any side. Most kills are usually made from the opposite side moves assload of troops and there are plenty of fresh targets galore. This is why Pavlichenko was moved out of action after Sevastopol. Snipers die, a lot, no matter how good they are. It's a matter of time.

To get back on topic, here's a picture of Abingdon Cemetery, located in Washington County, Virginia. It's a historic cemetery and is home to a major Civil War memorial as well as several graves dating back to the 18th, 19th, and early 20th Century.

This is the Byrd House, located in the unincorporated community of Trammel in Dickenson County, Virginia. Trammel was originally a company-owned coal mining town built in the early 1900's and was the last company-owned town in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The residents of the town were able to purchase their homes back from the company in the late 1980's.

The Byrd House was named after Vance Byrd, a bigwig in the mining company that founded Trammel.

It was abandoned in the early 1990's and now no longer exists. This image was taken in the mid-to-late 2000's, and the house had already fallen into severe disrepair.

Here's some more images of Trammel, including the abandoned company offices, which are still standing as of 2019.

I betcha those teens in the photo were not volunteers, but conscripts at gun point. Nothing in the photo indicates that they were combat troops, but most likely unarmed auxiliaries peeling fucking potatoes, and I bet they wanted to be somewhere else.

As a matter of fact, army was segregated up 'til the end of WWII, so no, there were none of this altruistic "blacks and whites fighting shoulder to shoulder for the noble cause of liberaion of slaves" nonsense. Most Union generals didn't even think negros could even fight like men, that's just how colorblind they were. If we want to follow historical picture thread, let's not write bullshit commentaries.
