I understand the need for a new containment vessel, but part of me is still sad that this completely altered the look of the almost iconic sarcophagus.
Then again, the size of that new construction is absolutely mind-blowing. It's a giant arc that manages to cover the entire building, it's sort of surreal. And it was moved over the building on giant rails.

This haunting photo is taken from those military tests where we sent our own troops into sites immediately after the detonation of atomic weapons. Half the time they were not equipped with proper radionuclear gear, but as far as the government is willing to let us know most of them live a normal lifespan. However, the atomic weapons used in these tests were baby nukes that tended not to scratch what the real thing could deal (on top of not wanting to poison their men, those bombs were expensive back then).

I thought the guy in the back there was lit by some kind of flash from an explosion, but now I realize he's either illuminated by headlights or a camera flash.

I grew up next to a Vietnam and Korea war veteran who took part in those tests. He died in his late 70s from kidney cancer. His wife was certain it was from the tests. He used to tell me that if he knew a nuclear war was coming, he'd just go take shelter in a coal mine shaft and be fine. Really good dude and I feel lucky to have known him. Had an interesting life.

Speaking of nuclear power plants.


The degree to which the 1979 incident at Three Mile Island and later, Chernobyl, absolutely wrecked the US' nuclear power industry can be seen in the number of plants that were in various stages of construction across the country that were stopped in their tracks, some more than half-complete, and abandoned to the elements. An expected demand for electricity that never came, spiraling costs and a soft economy certainly didn't help, but, if you look at a list of never-finished reactors, they all have project cancellation dates that start in the early 80's with pretty much no new projects even proposed after the mid-80s. Urban explorers have found a surprising number still around, slowly rotting away along with the promise of what might have been.





Hartsville A1-A2-B1-B2- Hartsville, TN A super-ambitious TVA plan to have no less than 4 operational reactors at one site, would've been the largest such plant in the world at the time. Abandoned at roughly 44% complete - 1982

I wonder how expensive it would be to buy one of these and use them for Post-Apocalypse events and stuff.
Would be an amazing playfield for Airsoft, too.

Historically Florida was very sparsely populated and a very rural southern state historically. Due to it being hot and humid as fuck. The modern notion of Florida only came to be in the 20th century due to AC. That and all that cocaine money in the 80s literally built up the state.

When this census was done there were less then 300,000 people living in Florida which might explain it. Fucking Iowa of all places was more populated then California and Florida combined

The dutch minsweeper named "Abraham Crijnssen" was stranded on its own in Asia after Japan attacked India. Ordered to withdraw to Australia, the crew had to camouflage the ship with plants to make it harder to spot.

You could call it a testament to the divisiveness of politics that BOTH those men were eventually gunned down to get them to shut up.....

Well you fuckers beat me to Yamaguchi and the infamous Vietnamese execution photo, so here's Lee Harvey Oswald being gunned down by Jack Ruby, a nightclub owner. The bullet pierced a ton of organ tissue, and Oswald died about an hour and a half later in the same hospital JFK was taken to.
