Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash at Daytona International Speedway on February 18, 2001. I was a kid when this happened and was watching the race with my dad. I remember when the ambulance was leaving the track my dad going, "They're going awfully slow. That don't look good."

NASCAR was so divided at that time. If you were a Dale guy, you hated Jeff Gordon's guts. And if you were a Jeff guy, you hated Dale's guts. But it was really nice seeing the whole sport rally together after Dale's passing. I still think it's cool how strong Earnhardt fans supported his son after the crash, regardless of talent level. (Jr was a good driver and excellent person, but nowhere the skill level of his father.)

It's really strange, since the crash itself doesn't even look that bad.
Sound quality is kinda fucked...

Simo Hayha, also known as White Death, the nickname was given to him by Red Army soldiers. One of the most legendary snipers in the history of modern warfare. It's alleged he killed between 500-550 Red Army soldiers in their invasion of Finland. He used an early series SAKO M/28-30 rifle with an iron sight as opposed to a scope like most other snipers had begun using as he feared the sun would reflect on the scope and give away his location. He would eat snow in order to hide his breath from enemy Red Army snipers and ensure his location was concealed. Before the war he mostly lived a quiet life on a farm in Finland but was a skilled hunter and marksman as the Commies would soon find out. His deeds became almost mythical to the Finnish armed forces and he became a symbol of dread to the Red Army.

On March 6th 1940 he was hit in the lower left jaw by an explosive round fired by a Red Army soldier but amazingly he was rescued by fellow Finnish soldiers and survived his injury. He lost consciousness and came back to himself the day Finland reached a peace agreement with the Soviet Union. He survived World War 2 and eventually lived to the ripe old age of 96, funnily enough he passed away in 2002 so he also lived to see the death of the Soviet Union.

And the image below is how he looked after recovering from his facial injury during the war.

It's worth pointing out that the 500-550 kills number is the number confirmed by the Soviets. It's not like Simo Haya came back every day, saying something like "I shot 10 guys today" and that's what went down in history, these numbers were checked back and corrected via the Soviets. Also, this is only the number of guys he shot with his sniper rifle. He supposedly shot 200ish more guys with his SMG.
And he did this in roughly 100 days of active service.

No wonder soviet soldiers came to fear this guy.

Must've been disappointed with it:

Historic picture of armed striking miners back in Virgina (having their guns taken from them) and of armed Black Panther Members (who were the prime worry of the NRA) when the left was the victim of gun control.

How things change. Now it is the left that's afraid of Russians and the right that's screetching about freedom to bear arms.
Orwells little book can be applied on so many things.
We've always been at war with Eastasia

Not so much a historical image, but the Balloonfest of '86 was an event held by the Cleveland branch of the United Way where millions of balloons were going to be released at the same time over the shores of Lake Erie for charity and Guinness World Records notoriety. It didn't gain them the record, but it was an environmental and safety disaster, costing the lives of two fisherman out on Lake Erie at the time, as well as causing an impact on the lake's ecology, even to this day. The event turned sour due to a storm system heading in the era, and the organizers of the event deciding to release the balloons early. The balloons started to fall down over the city and surrounding areas mostly all at once, as far as in to the suburbs and even as far as Canada. It's something interesting in "events fucked up incredibly" territory, and it's kind of neat to see about.

John F. Kennedy, Jr. giving his father a final salute as his funeral procession passed by following his assassination in Texas in 1963, considered one of the most sorrowful photos in American history he was just 3 or 4 years old at the time.

But as we know heartbreak and the Kennedy family are quite an iconic duo. JFK, Jr. would die in 1999 when his plane crashed over the ocean killing him, his wife, and his sister-in-law.

Rita-Hayworth-0.jpg

A makeover on Rita was done to get her more popular in Hollywood. Her changes included weight loss, dying her naturally dark hair to Auburn and electrolysis to raise her hairline on her forehead. The electrolysis took two years and all that work produced the Rita Hayworth that is famous today. The new Rita photograph was taken after the late 1930s.
