Shari Miller (the girl above) got strangled to death by serial killer Billy Bradford, shortly after he took several pics of her including the ones above. This happened in 1984, and his ass was put on trial 4 years later.
Even though he got sentenced to death, Bradford died of cancer in 2008.
Concordia University is an English-speaking university in Montreal, Quebec, Canada formed by the merger of Sir George Williams University and Loyola College in 1974, with 46 thousand currents students, studying the usual mix of subjects like mathematics, geography, philosophy, accounting, mechanical engineering, etc.
You think a provincial institution (roughly equivalent to what the British would call "plate glass universities") would have a pretty staid and uneventful history.
You would be wrong.
This incident (taking place at Sir George Williams University before the merger) arose from protests by West Indian students against a professor, accusing him of "unfair grading". Attempts to arbitrate the dispute failed, and the students would hold a sit-in protest on the ninth floor, which was held the computer labs starting on January 29. In occupation continued until Feburary 11, when the police moved in and arrested several of the protesters. During the protest, the occupiers would throw computer punch cards, tapes and phones down onto the street, resulting in $3 million in damages and the loss of 3 decades of work.
The professor was later exonerated of any changes of racism. The ring leaders of the riot got prison sentences of two to four months. Interestingly, many of protestors came from wealthy West Indian families - one of them would become the Prime Minister of Dominica, another was the son of a Prime Minister of Guyana.
Valery I. Fabrikant was professor of mechanical engineering at Concordia with a history of making trouble. This included blackmail, threats and generally blaming others for his own problems. He also sued the university to remove his colleague's names from some papers.

On May 7, 1984, Denis Lortie, a Canadian Forces Corporal, entered the National Assembly (the unicameral legislature of Quebec) with sub-machine guns and ammo. He intended to kill Premier Rene Levesque and his government because the advocated a "Francophone identity for Quebec", even though he was a native French-speaker who spoke English worse than French*. Fortunately, Lortie mistimed his attack, so he attacked an empty legislature and only killed 3 people, non of them MNAs. Still he was able to sit in the Speaker's chair and shoot from their.
Lucky, the Serjeant-at-Arms, a WW2 and Korea veteran was able to talk him down before he eventually surrendered. An absolute chad.
* Rene Levesque was Premier since 1976 and the first from the Parti Quebecois, a party that advocates the independence of Quebec from Canada. They held a referendum of "sovereignty-association" in 1980, but lost. They did win the election in 1981, however.
Long story short, Pennsylvania found out it's workers had millions in overpaid federal taxes, and there was a multi-million dollar contract for accounting firms to figure it all out. The one that got the contract (from California, not surprising) wound up bribing Dwyer, who was Pennsylvania's treasurer at the time, to get it. Someone anonymously tipped off the Governor, and eventually Dwyer was brought up on charges. He had an opportunity to plead guilty to one charge and only get a maximum of five years as well as resign, but the dumbass refused. He wound up getting found guilty of eleven counts, and was faced with a sentence of up to 55 years and a $300,000 fine (that was the amount he was bribed with). A day before sentencing, he held a press conference and blew his head off shortly after saying goodbye to his family.
The exceptional media of Penn state played his suicide during the news, which I'm guessing someone taped and uploaded years later.
I think the guy who bribed him later stated his remorse, saying had he known it would end in Dwyer's suicide, he wouldn't have done it.

There's some misinformation on this. The sad part was he was set up and from what I remember he didn't take the bribe. They wanted him out because he was an honest politician who didn't take shady deals. There's an entire documentary about it. The man who tried to bribe him came out decades later in this documentary admitting that he never went along with the deal and that people just wanted R Budd Dwyer out of office for not being shady.
R Budd Dwyer killed himself because there was no other way out. He was going to go to prison for the rest of his life for something he never did.

In the documentary, William Smith refers to two separate trials: (i.) his own 1985 trial (with co-defendant Alan R. Stoneman) and (ii.) Dwyer's 1986 trial (with co-defendant Robert Asher). He states that at his own trial he lied under oath when he testified that he did not offer Dwyer a bribe (he stated that only John Torquato, Jr. offered Dwyer a bribe). In the documentary, Smith maintains that he testified truthfully at Dwyer's 1986 trial when he stated that he offered Dwyer a bribe and that Dwyer accepted his offer. Smith states that he regrets offering Dwyer the bribe: "to the day I die, I'll regret that I did it".

J.R. Montgomery died on May 15, 1864, but his grave was later lost, and his family was never able to find it and return his remains to Mississippi. He still lies buried somewhere near Spotsylvania Courthouse, Virginia.

A group of 20-28 year old japanese sailors who got rescued by a group of young Mercedarian members, after their ship "Tokai Maru" got sunk in Punta de Lobos (few kms away from Pichilemu, Chile.) in February 19th, 1955. *= "Animitas" are shrines (of varied shapes and sizes) built in public places where people died in accidents, got murdered or committed suicide. People usually offer prayers to the souls and thank them with candles/flowers/toys/"thank you" plates if the prayers come true. The most miraculous souls have more than 1 shrine if the original one is too full.
The term "animita" (from "ánima", which means "soul") is only used in Chile, even though small shrines like these exist in other Latin American countries as well.
