The EF5 tornado in Joplin, MO on May 22nd, 2011, shortly after its formation. It would go on to take 158 lives, spread mucormycosis to at least 13 people, killing an additional 5, and causing at least 18 suicides in the aftermath, for a total of 181 lives lost and over 2.8 billion US dollars in damages (3.64 billion US dollars when adjusted for inflation). It is the costliest tornado in history and the deadliest in the US since 1947.
