The State Department has revoked former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's security clearance after she requested that it be withdrawn, according to a letter released Friday by a top GOP senator.

The State Department—in a letter dated Sept. 21 but publicly released Friday— told Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, that the security clearance was revoked on August 30 after Clinton requested that it be withdrawn.

"We would like to provide you with an update on the status of former Secretary Clinton's security clearance and the ongoing administrative review pertaining to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other current and former department officials," Charles Faulkner, the acting assistant secretary of legislative affairs, wrote to Grassley.

The State Department added in the letter to Grassley that five of Clinton's aides had also had their security clearance revoked.

Four of the names are redacted but one aide listed in the email is Cheryl Mills, who worked as Clinton's chief of staff.

"As we previously informed the committee, these individuals had been granted access to classified information through a request made by Secretary Clinton designating them as researchers," Faulkner added.

Clinton's security clearance has been a long-running sore spot for conservatives after the FBI, led by then-Director James Comey, found in 2016 that Clinton had been "extremely careless in their handling of very sensitive, highly classified information."

Clinton used a private email server during her time as secretary of State, and was attacked by President Trump and Republicans about it during the 2016 presidential campaign when she became the Democratic nominee.

It wasn't immediately clear if the State Department had authorized Grassley to publicly release the letter.

Faulkner in the letter asked Grassley to "protect" it and said that they were not clearing it for release by giving the letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The letter includes a note saying it was authorized for release by Grassley.

Security clearances held by former Obama administration officials have been under scrutiny since Trump sparked backlash when he revoked former CIA Director John Brennan's clearance earlier this year.

The White House said at the time that they were considering revoking security clearances for former CIA Director Michael Hayden, former national security adviser Susan Rice, Comey and former Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's security clearance has been revoked at her request, the State Department told lawmakers, according to a letter made public Friday.

Clinton's clearance was withdrawn on Aug. 30, according to a letter from the State Department to Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), which he released.

Five others associated with Clinton, including longtime aide Cheryl Mills, also had their clearances revoked on Sept. 20, according to the letter. The aides were known as "research assistants," which allowed them to keep their clearances after their time at the department concluded.

The move comes almost a year after Grassley asked the department to investigate and review whether Clinton's aides still had security clearance.

Clinton in 2016 was investigated for her use of a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state. No charges were filed against Clinton, who was running for president at the time of the probe.

This summer, President Donald Trump revoked former CIA Director John Brennan's security clearance, and the White House has said he is reviewing several other clearances of former top officials. Clinton's name was not on the list of those said to be under review.

Hillary Clinton lost her security clearance according to an announcement from the Senate Judiciary Committee on Friday.

Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley also revealed that Hillary Clinton’s aide (who became her lawyer) Cheryl Mills along with four others also no longer have clearance.

Via the Senate Judiciary Committee:

The U.S. State Department recently confirmed that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s security clearance has been withdrawn at her request. Clearances for five other individuals whom Clinton designated as researchers have also been withdrawn, including close aide Cheryl Mills, according to the State Department’s update of its ongoing review of the mishandling of classified information related to the use of Clinton’s non-government email server.

Documents containing classified material have been sent to the Bureau of Diplomatic Security, and all valid security incidents have been added to the security file for some individuals. Department authorities are continuing to review tens of thousands of documents for classified content.

The update was provided to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley and is being released for the first time following consultation with the State Department. The update follows a letter from the Department in May of 2017 confirming the Department’s review into any mishandling of classified information stemming from the use of Clinton’s non-government email server. That letter, which responded to an inquiry from Grassley, also outlined the review and adjudication process.

Thanks to conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch, the American public was made aware of Hillary Clinton’s private email server. Hillary Clinton conducted official business on a non government server so she could hide her Clinton Foundation pay-to-play while she was head of the Department of State.

Although Hillary deleted/BleachBit over 33,000 emails having to do with ‘yoga’ and ‘Chelsea’s wedding,’ Judicial Watch continues to uncover classified material exchanged on her private server through FOIA lawsuits.

What, you thought the investigation into that private server was done? Comey may have tried his damnedest, but this case is far from over. It's just been really, really quiet since it was reopened last year, and we haven't heard much at all about it since the OIG report dropped back in July, but it's still chugging right along, and she just lost five of her spyglasses.

About time, not sure what took you Americans so long.

This should have happened at least 5 years ago.

Is it wrong that I'm a bit suspicious she requested that she lose security clearance? Maybe I'm just a bit disappointed it wasn't taken away from her without so much of a resistance, but it almost sounds like it was planned.

It was "planned" in the sense that it was scheduled to expire at that time. The "request" to revoke it was essentially her electing not to try to renew it.

Nah, it sounds like a "you can't fire me, I quit" situation.

The only obvious reason to do it is she wants to do something that would be prohibited if she had it.

There's a reason they usually have you keep any security clearance you ever had unless there's a reason otherwise.

I'm not sure why anyone sees this as something to be celebrated since it's obviously something she wants and requested herself.

Pretty much, yeah. She's talking about this guy here, who essentially just stood up and "demanded" his clearance was revoked as a political stunt. It looks a lot better for the cameras if you revoke it yourself rather than having it stripped from you, after all.
