Did anyone here grab an archive of the pilot before it was taken down? I can't find it anywhere.

It'd be great to have early access to rip it apart, but perhaps it's for the best it remains as lost media.

Hey, at least we got someone to describe what's in the video:
I copied the spoiler tweets, just in case someone wants to read them in a non-rétarded manner:
Not dead to me, I just saw the 1st scene and so far, it looks pretty good.
Imagine Little Witch Academia if it had like a Steven Universe art style.

I'll start by saying that before I started the survey, the starting page had an image like this except i saw a castle wall background with "High Guardian Spice" in red bold text over the shield.
Also, when I accepted the terms, I saw both Crunchyroll X VRV.

Anywho, the show begins with Rosemary (pink haired girl) and Sage (blue haired girl) stepping on a hill, about to take a wagon ride to High Guardian Academy.
After a joke where Rosemary tumbles down a hill, the 2 see their parents, and RM's dad mentions how...

her mother would be proud of her as he he shows Rosemary a charm pendant she's wearing.
We then learn that Sage wants to be a healer and her mother tells the 2 to "Don't forget Chompy" as they head off.
Chompy, a gray toad with tiny horns hops in and bites Sage's bag
Intro starts

The Opening to "High Guardian Spice" is actually pretty nice as it definitely feels like an anime OP.
The song's an English song and the scenes they show gives me some vibes.
New She-Ra: Girls BF group
Little Witch Academia: School and the students

Oh yeah!
And apparently, Rosemary's dad is gay as you see him and Rosemary living together with him pink haired man.

After the intro.
The 2 girls are still off and they noticed their hometown called, "Pebble" is smaller than they thought.
Then, after they scaled a mountain or canyon, I think it was Rosemary who decides who decides to cut the line to board a train...

With the help of a living chest that carries their items, they take out a broomstick and fly on board the train.
They then take a rest until they arrive to a city called "Linguard" where they are greeted by "Sages?" cousin and niece; who I think they're LGBTQs.

The girls go to the LGBTQ's house and with some magic, the 2 women hold hands and create a bedroom for their guests to sleep in.
It then cuts to a dream scene or a flashback of young RM seeing her mother who was a strong guardian fight darkness, but disappears.

Rose wakes up with tears in her eyes and when Sage wakes up and sees Rose, she offers to sleep with her and tells her that her mother's still out there alive.
Morning comes and upon Sage's niece trying to give the girls tea, I saw a wedding photo of the 2 women in the background.

The girl's then go to the Kitchen where they see that the white haired LGBTQ woman in charge of the Kitchen.
The girls eat breakfast and decide tto check out Linguard. So, they go to the marketplace and Rose almost hits a black brunette with her sword upon being excited.

BTW, Rosemary's sword is really her mom's and the black brunette eventually joins Rose and Sage's BF group. The opening spoils that.

Anyways, Rosemary then notices her locket's missing; which contains a picture of a cheese cake and they go after a tiny rodent creature called a Trixie who has it. They chase it to a tree where Rose want to kill it, but Sage tells her to wait and see what it does first.

They watch the Trixie do a little dance on a tree stump and Sage tells Rose that it's doing a ritual with the locket. It calls out its mates and evolves into a griffin looking creature. It then flies around the tree until 1 of its mates hears it.

They dive down from the tree and it causes the causes the younger mate to turn into a pink version of its lover. They then grab Rose's locket and break it in half in front of her. She gets the 2 halves back and it's revealed that the cheese cake picture is just a family photo.

Sage then takes Rosemary to a blacksmith to try and repair the locket. The blacksmith they see is a short blonde girl named Parsely who's also going to the academy to be a better blacksmith.
She also has 12 brothers and is in charge of all of them.

So, after the girls talk a bit and we get a joke of Parsley slamming her hammer to silence her brothers and sending 4 of them to do a chore, she offers to fix Rose's locket and give it back to her when school starts.
Then, it cuts to Rose and Sage back in Sages' cousins' house.

They tell Sages' cousins how their day went and the 2 girls go to bed together.
And the final scene of the ep. is Rose and Sage heading to the school and Sage replies to something Rose says with, "When I can use spells with 1 hand, I'll make you whole again."
Ep. Ends

There's also an anime like opening that shows the "Best friends squad" and gave me some new She-Ra vibes with the ending song and scenes, but it also felt more like Little Witch Academia.
However, I don't think it'll be as bad or cheesy as new She-Ra.

Correction to my 1st tweet on this, @RealClownfishTV:
Apparently, there's another ep. of High Guardian Spice the survey showed me. So, 2 episodes.
It's a Halloween ep; which has an antagonist who I like to call "Not Catra" and a big, muscular, talking cat.

If that's real, then I don't think anything more will be done, as this doesn't look like it will pass the test screenings.

So the 2020s are going to be filled with western companies trying to clone anime again like in the early 2000s?

If they're written well enough... Acceptable losses all around to get better Western animation to show off in the next decade and more. We Westerners could stand to show that we can draw good, again - as in not just write good sometimes... actually doing BOTH well and doing so more consistently so people aren't just turning to anime / live - action for everything, either. Making the medium something to respect (which it is sorely lacking right now.), again.

Optimism showing: we'll hopefully worry about balancing things out, later - we just need more good-looking Western shows and much, much fucking less cheap-looking / ugly ones to elevate the medium forward / make it somewhat competitive (if only possible) with anime again.

Seriously, though. We can't do that with Tumblr/CalArts being the dominant species, honestly. Something's gotta change with CalArts being the only outlet in town for new Western fare - I hope more and more people can take notice of that so we don't get crap this noticable more regularly than we are, now.

3d works and the nice thing about 3d is that in order to do Cal-Arts style characters requires a whole fuckload of skill to actually pull off properly. So Cal Arts styled shit would have a high barrier of expertise.

You can do digital hand drawn faces and digital hand painted textures and set them up with the rig controls

As undeniably awful as CalArts is I can't think of any reject weeb cartoon that was any good other than Avatar. Lesser of the two evils anyway.

I'd say something but something something fighting back against US media culture bullshit and knowing what the States likes out of anime than worshiping everything Japan ships out. IE Everything that High Guardian Spice isn't. Fuck, even RWBY is a low bar to pass even.

Someone could do a favor and adopt Don Bluth's artstyle.....

The fuck? Cal Arts demands skill to pull off? I thought that shit was pretty easy looking to pull honestly.

2d in 3d takes skill. In 3D you need the detail to be somewhat physically present even if you use stuff like displacement maps for textures.

Cal Arts style hands and arms being built in 3d would take far more work than just making a normal human hand. You would have to treat them much differently since they bend and contort all over the place especially with fingers. Blend Shapes/Morph Targets could take care of some of the movements, but not all and you would probably need individual rigs for specific movements of the hands themselves, because in some scenes they'll look and act like flippers while others they'll function like a claw and others they'll behave closer to a real hand.

Also fat people are a fucking pain in the ass to rig mostly due to skinning and envelopes.

If your characters behave like a fluid or are ungodly stretchy in their movements that would probably require a half or a whole department. Basically a ton of people to properly animate a character who's physical properties are closer to jello or stretch armstrong.

If you look how Japan tackles stuff, they design their 3d models to resemble anime styled stuff through optical illusions on how the geometry is formed around the face. They spend a ton of time modeling stuff in 3/4 perspective so the contours of the face are spaced properly when viewed at other angles. They will also have textures animated that will go over the geometry, basically treating the geometry like a movie projection screen where everything will be very smooth around the parts of the face that are animated. It's very similar how they do projected faces onto animatronics only everything is in a digital space.

Did anyone manage to archive the Clownfish video about the pilot? Looks like Ellation sent a takedown request.

I wonder why they took it down, the only Ellation-copyrighted content in it was the HGS promo art.

So it seems there is an NDA. Maybe Crunchyroll should learn to pick a better test audience that wont blab to the Internet about their super secret project. Also I love how the leak unashamedly calls it a cross between SU and Little Witch.

How is it super secret? It's supposed to out by now.

This has been a problem in western animation since around the late 2000s, and I don't see any change on that front coming any time soon. As much as it sucks, the western animation industry is an oligopoly where your options are Simpsons/Family Guy "adult" animation, CalArts kids animation, or Pixar/Dreamworks feature films. Anything outside of that is limited to animated shorts on YouTube.

Anime is not immune either. There used to be those "anime back then" memes where people take Akira and Ghost in the Shell and compare it to endless low quality garbage that is produced today. It's not a fair comparison, often comparing expensive animated features to TV shows made on a budget, but it shows that the rot has set in everywhere.

@Judge Dredd Being a bit sarcastic with that. Theyre trying to keep the contents of the show a “surprise” but we all know its gonna be safe, inoffensive, generic shlock that won’t even be worth keeping a lid on this. They’re trying so damn hard for it to be it’s own thing by taking ideas from established ideas, even if it does come out I doubt it’ll even last a full season.

It takes skill to make anything look good but if you want to do a shitty job and look like every other shitty hack SU lookalike, that's easy by comparison.

Indeed. RIP OVA market

Look at the timespan. Akira came out in 1989, GitS came out in 1995. You can't just cherrypick few good animes from two decades and compare it with stuff from only last few years.
There's tons of garbage from the 80s and the 90s that's rightfully never talked about anymore.

Watch Nora OVA's.

Animation-quality wise, Western animation has its ups and downs too. Watch old Hanna-Barbera cartoons from 60 years ago, like Flintstones, Jetsons, Yogi Bear. What they present would be acceptable today only in amateur Youtube shorts.

As for Calarts style itself, however you define it, like every trend, it will lose popularity some day. HGS might end up being late to the party.

Indeed we will never have another booming OVA marker where super violet shows get made, like Apocalypse Zero and Mad Bull 34.

Something about the person who posted about it broke the NDA and because they asked nicely and didn't threaten them. At least this provided proof that this was real and not something someone made up.

The promo art is just so dull and unappealing. This doesn't look like anything special because nothing special, exciting, let-alone noteworthy is going on in this promo art. Promo art is supposed to get the attended audience pumped and excited for its release by showing a sneak-peek of something that's bound to be trailer-worthy. Two witches (oh wait, Rosemary's not a witch lel) flying down an empty strip mall leaving behind who're supposed to be their BFF comrades whose running styles are just as plain as they are is not exciting no matter how you slice it.

"Steven Universe meets Little Witch Academia" (of which now HGS is way more behind the times ever since the SU movie aired) is a terrible pitch and that alone isn't enough to get a show green-lit. And here's the thing, you can do a slice-of-life magical girl show, but it needs to provide something new or fresh or different from the rest of its competition to attract an audience. And HGS hasn't provided any of that. It's too generic and safe even for its intended target audience.

I also still don't believe the blonde's a dwarf. The Powerpuff Girls reboot has a better grasp on perspective and size than all the artists who worked on this combined.
