Anime and anime-inspired stuff will do just fine without recycling that old trope of the lovable sex pest. Other tropes go out of style constantly. And you could introduce some sensuality in better ways if you feel inclined to.

High guardian Spice looks like shit on a stick, i am just reading the thread to get confirmation than it is.

Perversion when treated as a gag then properly explored is pretty fascinating (which isn't what YOU'RE talking about, but I wanted to spring board as there are ways to reinvent the trope).

My two favorite examples are Brock from Pokemon, and Sanji of one piece- two hyper romantic cooks who take great joy in taking care of others but lose their cool at the sight of woman. For sanji it is far worse, but for Brock it is more common. Brock is a simp, and Sanji straddles between woman worshiper and a desperate loser.

Brock I'll use since most people aren't that interested in the pokemon anime, but Sanji I'll leave others to read on their own because I love his story.

At first, we're not offered a lot of explanation as to why he acts the way he does, he's just constantly love struck with no outlet then gets the stuffing kicked out of him by Misty or one of his own pokemon.

Later on, and a little before, it's explained that Brock's mother had gone through several husbands in order to not feel alone in her Job as the Gym leader. She was taking severe losses, and her husbands often left her with little explanation. This is according to HIS father, who was barely there for most of Brock's life. To make matters worse for a young Brock, he had 9 siblings to care and raise for- essentially, he had to become a man without anyone but himself to rely on, with no support from family or parent.

He then became infatuated with the about becoming a pokemon breeder (read; nurse, scientist, and vet) to take care of and bring out the best of these creatures he cherishes- it's a reflection and cope on how he had to take care of all of his siblings, who came from different fathers. On top of that, he had to become a gym leader, which to be certified means winning 100 evenly matched battles to be certified- with a pokemon like Onix, who is in some cases weaker then a literal Caterpillar. He feels like he isn't enough, and wishes to succeed in caring and loving something in the way his parents failed to. He struggles hard, and is successful, but life hasn't seemed to let him win.

As a result, he believes in love in a super ideological way, that anyone can be the perfect girl, responsible woman are beautiful, and that trainers are passionate. It's why he chases the Officers and Nurses most often in the anime- they're the perfect match to being- you guessed it, a wife and mother, something he has no real world basis on beyond romantic novels and imagination. He essentially was a father to 9 since he was a kid, and it only grew more as he became a father to his own pokemon.

Eventually, after 20 years, he does settle down with a fellow rock type gym leader named Olivia, and does get his happy ending, but the point still stands- the gag, the behavior, stemmed from a real personal issue, and in the end he wins over it and gets what he wants in a healthy manner- gag still involved, but with a more wholesome twist as opposed to the annoyance of all previous attempts. Brock instead turns his gag made from suffering into a strength made by it- he is fiercly loyal, deeply loving, and is a super intelligent and responsible figure within any group he's in. His faults are now a joke to HIM, as opposed to AT him anymore.

TL;DR- The funniest gags, and the most meaningful developments, come from the comedy then resolvement of a real issue. Comedy hits well if you know the story behind it, the context, but the comedy can develop into genuine drama and resolve into something more, where the character isn't being laughed at- but something they can then laugh at too.

Which makes it unfortunate when perversion is used so poorly and undermines a characters strengths AND weakness by letting them be and doing nothing better or worse with them.

Even stupid shit can be meaningful and written decently.

For that reason, I think Brock and Sanji are both more lovable characters. They aren't sex pests at all actually, just either hopeless romantics or lonely dudes trying to get girlfriends. They're entirely different from characters like Master Roshi.

That's how you play with a trope. Sanji is a "pervert" character, but Oda also gave him other traits that doesn't make him entirely based around his perversion. In a sense, Master Roshi is also the same. He's a pervert, yes, but he's also a "wiseman" character since he's Goku's teacher. And coincidentally, Oda was a huge fan of Dragon Ball and it was his biggest inspiration as a mangaka

Really the trick to writing a compelling/funny pervert character (outside of expanding them beyond the perverse traits) has a lot to do with the comedy concept of heightening. I.e. adding onto an already established concept to escalate or exasperate the situation.

Characters like Brock and Sanji’s antics started off as rather benign flowery declarations of love to every woman and meet and silly fantasies, so getting to the more overt “titties go boing boing” jokes was a gradual process; and it’s easier to reel such characters back to where they initially started if the giggle physics get old. Comparatively, pervert characters who already start off at that point can only get increasingly more depraved to achieve the same heightening effect, which is how you end up with characters like Quagmire.

Another manga/anime I can recommend with a similar vein (but without as much ecchi/adult content so it's safer for work) is centaur no Nayami, or Centaurs life/worries. Focuses on a world of just magical creatures, no humans, and how they would use things like we do and how stuff would look different etc, such as holes in clothing for tails and wings (or how centaurs would even wear clothes) or cars adapted for larger/smaller beings. Also discusses politics and wars in such a world and different cultures that develop (like how reptile races are very different in structure to the mammal ones).
Didn't that manga have one chapter with the Holocaust in it? Like Nazi centaurs are putting Jewish centaurs into train cars to send them to camp?

Pretty much, it also has later chapters dealing with guerilla warfare in an African-like country ruled by frog people who are divided into tribes, some that hate foreign help/takeovers, and some that welcome it. Along with an overarching sub-plot about how the snake race is secretly monitoring and controlling things from the shadows. And aliens. It gets a bit wild at times when its not doing cute slice of life plots.

My sincerest apologies for the delays, everyone. I've been mired in overtime, family shenanigans, and general exceptionalism on my end. I'm not the greatest at having a stable schedule, despite my efforts. Regardless, I have some progress art to share! 20220313_163727.jpg 20220313_163618.jpg 20220313_230948.jpg
The girl is Princess Annalise, one of the driving forces behind the story. Kinda combined Sage and Rosemary's color palette to create her.

EDIT: Finished up Princess Annalise's art, and made her look cleaner than as a colored sketch.

Are you creating an original story? I wouldn't tie something I make to this pile of crap.

Well, yes and no. It's like a fanfic wrapped in an original work. Without giving too much away and the best way I can describe it, it's like an AU with some select characters, and not done to fellate a character, or inflict some horrific fetish on the reader/player.

Oh, and it's meant to offend the loud assholes on Twitter, but first and foremost, I want it to be a solid work.

So, out of the blue, I've been getting reccommended videos of clips from the show posted by a channel that's supposedly making an abridged version of HGS? It's mostly just unfunny memes and the guy who runs it is a literally who.

oh shit nigger what the fuck are you doing.PNG

The thumbnails are kind of baity and I would have assumed this was just some random youtuber simping for the series if I didn't actually watch a few of the clips myself, and in doing so I have poisoned my reccomended videos for the forseeable two weeks...

I've been getting them too. I can't fault the intent but I agree it's not good at all.

I've only ever seen a single abridged series that was any good, and it was pulled off youtube by copyright after a single episode.

I found out about a Tweet that Win98Tech did about High Guardian Spice lacking budget compared to many other programmes, including Space Ghost Coast to Coast and SeaLab.

Although Win98Tech almost definitely was talking about SeaLab 2021, that can also apply to SeaLab 2020. Both programmes also had a lacking budget: SeaLab 2020 relied on limited animation, whereas SeaLab 2021 was mainly a Gag Dub with little new animation. Despite that, they both win to a rather unfair degree simply because both have a concep that is, even today, very different: one set in an underwater laboratory. Meanwhile, High Guardian Spice just repeats the 'magical girls go to a school of magic' story that has been done a lot o the point of others rightfully comparing High Guardian Spice to many other series.

That aside, SeaLab 2020 was a very good series that, fantastical premise aside, took a rather serious look at what an underground sea lab would be in real life: the bends were a constan threat, they would be getting the brunt of oil spills, and people may go crazy from being stuck underwater. They also took surprisingly mature takes on controversial manners: nuclear energy may make dangerous leaks but gets plenty of use in submarines, whereas catching se animals may be taking them out of their environments but also can be necessary in teaching others through zoos. From all of this, despite SeaLab 2020 being aimed at a young crowd, I never go tha 'talking down' feeling that High Guardian Spice did wi the transgender scene. That is probably because the lessons were actually integrated into th episodes or were logically placed, then stayed out of the way.

SeaLab 2021, because of the recycled animation, had to heavily rely on its writing... which was its trong point. How many people these days keep quoting abou 'those jerks from Pod 6'? They were also capable of making surprisingly clever jokes: they mocked how people from Spain wer excluded from affirmative action while Latinos were not. Also, what abou 'Tinfins', which poked fun at long pre-film shows? The irony was that SeaLab 2021, despite its lower budget, was way, WAY more popular and influential than SeaLab 2020 (to the point of getting a crossover with Archer, which was made by the same people). Another irony is tha the later episodes, despite their higher budgets due to their use of more unique animation, were a case of Seasonal Rot.

Writer Kate Leth doesn't have her own thread, so I'll just put this here.

Despite the fact that Kate Leth has a borderline personality disorder diagnosis and is covered in self-harm scars, the Canadian government rubber-stamped her mastectomy.

She's opted for nippleless, because deep down she's always been one of those nippleless, chest hair-free dudes from Disney's Aladdin trapped in a woman's body.

And look how happy she is about it!

And, in a truly bizarre move, right up until four days before her surgery, Kate Leth was posting topless pics for her $10+ Patreon supporters. She even had a bullshit fake-feminist, actually-internet-thot reason for how posting titty pics was actually sticking it to the man and "gaming the system". (Totally not doing it just for the attention, y'all!)

I'm not giving Kate $10, so you only get the previews she posted to Instagram, though.

Lol at those Edgelord Scissorhands pics that are just like what a teenage girl would post on her self-harm Tumblr. If she wanted to hack her tits off for any other reason than "gender" people would probably see this all as a huge red flag and try to get her some help. Ah well.

I think this comic hints at the root of the problem.

Huh, having an unstable sense of self and wanting to have different personas (and body parts!) that you can put on and take off like a costume? Almost sounds like you were diagnosed with borderline personality disorder or something.

Tbqh, I truly think that this whole "teet-yeeting" saga is Kate Leth single white NB-ing Noelle Stevenson, who also lopped off her tits, on account of the aforementioned borderline personality disorder.

The whole thing is just really sad. Kate has been engaging in cries for help of increasing extremeness since her cancelling for doing a racism, but since she claimed that all her issues were because yadda-yadda gender, all her woketard friends have just been encouraging her self-harm instead of getting her actual help. And now her nips are gone forever.
