I've been working at the same soul-crushing job for six months now. A few days ago, though, something happened: I was reassigned from my old, boring position to a new one. I'm now a designated operator of the biggest, newest, most technologically advanced wood dryer in the factory, and apparently currently the largest machine in the entire complex... though that's not saying much, because I'm probably still going to end up being paid like crap.
The thing is... I'm surprised someone trusted me with that kind of responsibility. That's never happened in my life before. I worked hard for half a year, and then they just decided to give me a chance. They considered me trustworthy enough...
To be fair, I was probably the best theoretical candidate for the job. The dryer is still being finished and calibrated by some Finnish guys from a company that manufactured it, and it's operated via a couple of simple computers and control panels. I'm moderately handy with computers and decent at speaking English and therefore able to communicate with the Finns and be trained by them (and later share the knowledge I gained with others), and, well, many of my co-workers are people who flunked out of secondary/high school, are illiterate and/or elderly, so...
It's kind of terrifying how much now depends solely on me. But, it's an opportunity, so I'll take it.
One huge upside is, for the time being my work hours are one shift from 8AM to 6PM with weekends off instead of three shifts with a day off every four days. So I don't have to sleep during the day anymore, for now.
Also check my quads.
