Captain Fag History here to gay the day.
“don’t you know that he/him lesbians are in the literal history?”
funny they say that but they don’t use any sources
So there is a history of some lesbians using masculine pronouns, but not really with the explanations these Tumblr-types are describing. It was basically uniformly "butch" lesbians (aka, lesbians who were naturally kind of masculine in appearance and personality). There was playing around with terms like "boi" in the lesbian community, as well as butches who wore packers or bound their chests, in addition to pronouns. Typically these individuals did not want to "transition" in the way we think of it, though many expressed confusion, and certainly it was obvious that life would be easier as a masculine male than a masculine female....But it's more accurate to say they were simply using their appearance to signal to partners that they were butch, basically.
It was the exact same thing as super-gay men calling each other "gurl" and stuff. It was sort of punny for a lot of folks.
It makes me cringe when people talk about butch lesbians like they're all pathetic sad sacks, wishing they were "as good as a man", because a whole boatload of lesbians (including butches and femmes) really never gave a shit and like being women attracted to women. But that's a separate rant I guess.
It can perhaps be argued that the "dysphoria" these historical butch lesbians felt is the same as (some) of the dysphoria both FTMs and/or trenders claim to have.... but if that's true, than there is no clear way to tell "real" FTMs from "just lesbians". This should be really concerning to anybody with a brain.
Any Kiwi who has a greater connection to the lesbian community than I can feel free to chime in/correct.
I can cite some books if anyone is really interested.
Now it's progressive to say lesbians who don't dress femininely are actually un-women. So now liberals are just using old anti-lesbian insults, calling them pro-lesbian, and demanding people accept it unquestioningly or risk ostracism.
Yep. An ouroboros of stupid. Their entire definition of "gender" is based on superficial inflections which validate their current whims.
- the term "lesbian"
means a woman who is attracted to other women. If you don't identify as a woman, you can't be a lesbian
Got to disagree here. I'd argue it is specifically to mean females attracted to other females. Splitting hairs, but in this context, I think it's necessary.
But actually scratch all that it seems the term is mostly used by lesbians to deny that the characters they want to ship are straight.
Nailed it. There's actually at least 1 academic paper written on this phenomenon.
I hear that the butch lesbians (the ones who look like guys) used to try to pass themselves off as men when going out in public with their girlfriend to avoid harassment. But since nobody in their right mind would harass two women for holding hands in public in 2018, what's the point?
Yeah, there's been lots of individuals who "passed" (fyi: There are actually occasional attacks on lesbians, but they don't get much news. But you're deff not gonna be arrested like the 50s.)
For the record, I think if you're a transman who recognizes that transmen are female, you could also say you are technically a lesbian. But that's a very separate case than "I'm completely female but still want him pronouns because lol".
