spoilers ahead i guess (is anyone who reads this thread going to actually watch this shit without being forced?)
A certain webp enthusiast convinced me to give this show a try, a series i assumed i didnt need to watch to know its shit. i now know for sure that its shit but NOW, i can say it with authority. however inspite of the cringe, and the bad writing, and the juvenile and over use of swearing, and the faggotry, and the blasphemy, and the overall poor cohesion with really anything in the story, i found that within hazbin hotel there is alot of (meager) value to what i always assumed to be irredeemable woke garbage. this show has to be quite possibly the gayest thing i have ever watched and yet i actually liked it in the end. hazbin hotel is the culmination of every bad prime or netflix show that only exists to virtue signal faggotry and yet even within that it manages to fuck up so badly that it surpasses all the rest and creates its own level of not quite so bad its good but not exactly redeemable. it feels almost hostile to the viewer as with much media made by people who believe virtue signaling to be a form of art.
here are some of my biggest complaints with the show after having watched both seasons,
poor and nonsensical use of anthropomorphism:
the biggest case of this has to be that of angel dust and valentino, even setting aside how ridiculous their dynamic is to the point of parodying what they are trying to show its clear that there was a theme going with the animals they portray. angel dust being a spider, caught in a web. and valentino, a moth spinning a web to catch a spider? it makes no sense infact its reversed, its typical that moths or butterflys get caught in spider webs, yet viv either didnt remember or chose specifically to switch around this common relationship. i could believe this if the show had good writing but unless this is leading up to some reversal of roles when angel dusts arc is finished or just to show that due to power imbalances the moth is the one in control, however angel dust is already such a pathetic character that i dont think you need to use this relationship to emphasize it. this is just the biggest example of characters being designed so haphazardly as to not make any sense in combination with their actual character, its part of a larger issue across the whole show of characters not fitting who they are. the arms dealer not wanting to get her hands dirty but supplying weapons to all of hell could be an interesting conflict of interest if they did not try to portray her as a master duelist or if they made her character grow instead of just repeating her arc from season 1 in season 2, she learns nothing and as such her character doesnt make sense since the writers dont know what direction they want to take her in.
on occasion they do have some interesting concepts of anthropomorphisizing characters in ways that makes sense to the character like with alastor representing radio and vox representing new age media which is then supported by their backstorys thus giving reason for why they look the way they do. alastor being shot while mistaken for a deer is a bit out there in relation to vox whos backstory is very tailored to his character in hell but alastors character in hell isnt really about his radio show in the first place so it makes sense. pentious being a snake is a little on the nose with how we are first introduced to him but is a good way of subverting the audiences expectations by having him become the first sinner to be redeemed, this unlike angel dust actually makes sense and gives the character more reason to be.
terrible, no good, very bad, awful dialogue:
i will keep this short since i know everyone can hear it with their own ears (unfortunately). ill focus mainly on the song lyrics since its all too easy to say "there's too much swearing". now i know this is a low blow but i'll use the first song in episode 3 of season 1 for an example, it exemplifies everything wrong with the musical numbers of this series. for those who would not like to relive this cringe it's the boardroom meeting where the doll V shows off the angels head that turns into a bizarre mix of rap and pop music but with very little of the rythm and rhymes that makes either genre work. half of the lyrics in this song are just characters dialogue mixed in with some ending rhymes to make it flow just enough to be considered musical. whenever the flow does pick up its cut off by dialogue that breaks it, this happens alot in even some of the good musical interludes the series has. random characters budding in with dialogue or qwips that arent musical at all breaks up the flow and often ruins otherwise great verses, i dont know if this is all just par for the course for musicals but i think there is far better ways of integrating the musical aspect into the show without it just turning into a music video and hazbin hotel even does this a few times with some of their better songs. id say the finale song for season 2 is one of the best examples of this since even though characters do cut in with dialogue they atleast try to make it musical and its such an extended song that it feels like a better mix of the show and the music. i wont even touch the songs with angel dust in them because id rather not hear them again but barring those i think episode 3 s1 has to have the worst song in it, its just wretched especially with all the new age lingo that wont make any sense when people watch this in the future (may god have mercy upon those who decide to watch this shit ten years from now).
telling, not showing:
this particular "style" of "comedy" that hazbin employs is wraught with this basic mistake and its something i cannot ignore, i find it to be the biggest sin any piece of media can commit. there is too many examples of this but i think the one that stood out to me the most was with the introduction of lucifer. we meet him in his house which is covered in duck's, his demeanor is quite anxious and overall he seems like a very eccentric character as opposed to the standard depiction of lucifer we see. the scene ends with him getting ready to meet his daughter and its a big turning point for him as he is excited to go out, the scene closes as he is at the door to his house and looks at a little duck on the floor and says "take that depression!" with a sardonic look on his face. this interaction instantly ruined the scene because i went from seeing this character as a weird eccentric guy to being told that he has depression and knowing that viv was going to be incredibly unfunny whenever this character is onscreen. all because i was told something about the character outright, my opinion of that character plummeted because they are now not a character they are an archetype, viv wants him to be le wacky goofy relatable depiction of depression instead of just letting this character form itself through what we see onscreen. this is a common pattern across the whole show, episode 4 is basically an entire episode about telling you what angel dust's character is in a not so very subtle way.
if there is one thing that truly ruins the show it has to be this. if you are incapable of writing a character that can stand on its own then you are incapable of writing a show that can stand on its own and that is just what viv has done, she has created a show for fujo's and faggots and any substance left for those who wish to watch an actual story has been sucked dry by the screentime being used for dwelling on characters that add nothing to the story.
something that surprised me:
i went into this show expecting it to be sacriligious garbage made by liberals who hate god, and thats what it is. but when i actually look at it i see that besides the depiciton of some sins being good and the obvious critique that hell is too harsh a punishment for how little must be done to end up in it, (one sin and a hundred good deeds) i noticed that they are actually quite held back. i never thought liberals to be capable of making a depiction of hell that isnt just completely seething at god, perhaps that is due to viv being a spic and thus not able to go against her own people. i find that the holy spirit being represented by a bird who is not made to be evil like the other angels to be actually very respectful, the show's plot overall is actually about the sinners wanting to be redeemed for their sins (its just that the liberal is incapable of seeing things like lust as a sin). i bet i will be proven correct by later seasons and i bet that helluva boss is filled with all of the disdain for god that hazbin went without but in the end i respect them for not going full reddit atheist. the bible atleast so far wasnt even mentioned and seems to not exist in the story, hazbin hotels world really is a departure from normal themes of heaven and hell and thats really for the better. its very interesting to see their own take on the afterlife that isnt just outright trying to be hateful towards the christian afterlife and instead use theological themes to depict something original.
the themes in hazbin hotel are very similar to that of limbus company (blasphemous korean gacha game) in that it takes elements from theology and creates its own world out of them, it neither feels respectful nor disrespectful towards christianity or any other religion that it borrows from. they both even have a main theme of redeeming sinners, i think there is alot you can do with the ideas that religion brings to the table without actively advocating against it or for it. one of the few things that truely did intrigue me about hazbin is the world that they have created through their lens of christianity's afterlife. for how flawed it is that they are willing to accept sins such as gluttony or wrath as evil while being okay with lust and homosexuality, its actually a very thought provoking story due to this difference in ideas that they propose. so much media by liberals such as viv are so hateful and filled with vitriol that it has no substance to even those it was made for that to see something with any redeemable qualities shine through is actually a big acomplishment.
i'll end this impromptu review with what i think would be the best way to end the series (that obviously is too interesting for it to actually happen).
i think the fact that characters can somehow die in hell and just not go anywhere is ridiculous so at some point they would need to introduce the fact that the sinners do end up in hell after death inside hell (perhaps they could depict purgatory?) so much later in the series when the hotel is a success and they have actually redeemed most of hell and all that remains is those who are too unrepentant to ascend and the villains who are too filled with spite to ascend i think they could at this point start focusing alot on heaven as the main story area. they would show charlie being elevated to a higher status in heaven which would give her the character development she didnt get in hell. then the show would pivot to be about the old villains coming back to try and take over heaven, eventually charlie would witness the death of lucifer at the hands of the people she tried so hard to redeem but could not. the exorcist general would still be around at this point and to fufill her character arc she advocates for the reformation of the extermination program as peace has failed and the overlords will not go quietly. charlie, filled with the rage of seeing her father die (maybe you could bring lillith into this but i think shes a nothing character) accepts the the suggestion and orders the extermination of the remaining overlords in hell behind everyones back thus continuing the cycle of hell, vaggie would let this go on quietely as just like the archangel before her, charlie fails to find a peaceful resolution for heaven and hell to exist side by side. cut to the massacre happening in hell and the camera pans slowly out for a long time until the sound of battle cannot even be heard, eventually the camera pans out far enough to reveal a small orb where an actual angel sits, intently peering into the orb at hell, fade to credits with no end music just white text on a black background.
filled with plots holes? yes. but better than the actual ending which will be an extended gay sex scene between angel dust and the moth? yes. alternatively the ending could just be a remix of the hell is forever song from episode 1 while the entire main cast gets smited by actual god for being such raging homosexuals.
if viv makes an extended version of this song without the abrupt tv powering down ending i will forgive xer for everything bad about the show
