Force them together on screen and play it up for comedy rather than drama. Just have their shittiness play off of one another's and escalate to absurdity, and make it so that Olivia isn't as caught up in it so she can just do the moody teenage girl thing and "ugh, you guys are so weird!" at them.
You focus more on how stella growing up and having her interests and hobbies stomped on to prepare her for her wedding. Have it be the one thing she clung to and then show the damage being engaged to a homosexual that couldn't feel attracted to her caused.

It always bothered me how these people care more about criminals than their victims. Not just the way they ignore or minimize/eroticize suffering (*cough*Angel Dust*cough*), but to dismiss victims like this is really close to the victim blaming they bitch about so much. I know many of them see criminals as "victims too," but you can't redeem these people in general. The show can't handle how redemption would actually work save for more cut-and-dry cases like Pentious, so it doesn't bother outside of trust falls and group therapy sessions. They themselves know that token apologies are bullshit, with the gift baskets, but true redemption means actually improving yourself as a person.* Problem is when you think your characters are fine just the way they are, you don't want them to change. You're fighting your own premise every step of the way, while acting like the premise was never there in the first place.

I know in Christianity there's the whole forgiving one another because Jesus Christ has forgiven all our sins and we are supposed to aspire to be like him. There's also the whole when you ask Jesus to come into your heart, he cleanses you of your old sinful self and you becaome a new better person that turns away from all the sins you once commited. It's why in Christian media, a person who is a non-believer that becomes a believer does a whole 180 personality change.
