The two shows have a lot in common. P&S had it's musical numbers and goofy sideplots, but it still followed an end goal for the story to arrive at. It does the inverse of HB by STARTING with the dick joke and then wrapping around to the message. One example is an episode starting with a shit monster attacking a city, only to lead into Stocking and the monster courting and forming a relationship. Of course it ends in the iconic tokusatsu style clay monster explosion at the end, but it's a wholesome episode overall. Both shows have filler/bullshit episodes, but HB's story scale (or what it has grown into) can't afford to just spin tires and not advance the plot. In P&S, as long as they fought something and got a soul out of it, it was advancing the goal of the plot. I feel like criticism of HB wouldn't be as harsh if it was still a show about a motley crew running a hitman service out of Hell instead of a gay melodrama about an abusive relationship between a clown and a rich gay poof who neglects his wife and kid. Hazbin Hotel is supposed to be the show with the musicals and the gay melodrama, Viv. We don't need identical copies of the same extremely red shit.
Less gay, more of this:
