Oh noes! All these different opinions - now I don't know what to think!

I gotta disagree about Bradley. His animation is Adult Swim tier at best, and I'm talking Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

Something like AHTF survived on the quality of the jokes (and eventually pure habit when it Spongebobbed out). Bradley is painfully unfunny. His "jokes" are shit-tier and mostly plagiarized.

I have to agree with you on Bradley. While some of his animation looks shitting given he's trying to go for some faux anime look(Which you can see some of in Gen Zed with the eyes and such) I actually liked his 70's Hanna Barbera retro looking animation. I've always had a soft spot for cartoons like that and he portrays them pretty damn well...but Gen Zed looks like he stepped out of her comfort zone given the shitty looking flash feel and the blocky, broken movement.

Seriously, I'm no expert on animation, so it may well be that I'm overlooking all sorts of flaws in Bradley's work. That said, I can get a basic feel for a piece of work from a layperson's perspective. And while my natural reaction to the Gen Zed trailer was that of a horse sniffing bad hay, I found Bradley's other work to be created, at any rate, with a lot more care.

He also strikes me as smug (although that may just be his physical similarity to Dobson).

You think? Maybe my sensibilities are all out of whack right now (with good reason, I submit) - but that little intro at the start of the demo reel (*gasp* "Alex Bradley!") made me laugh quite a bit. Partly 'cause it struck me as genuinely tongue-in-cheek (and I'm a sucker for a well-delivered shot of sarcasm!) - but also because... Well, I already hinted at this - but guvk it. After Dobson's milquetoast whine, CWC's self-satisfied "y'all should know me by now" drone and (the otherwise sane, it transpires*) Devi Evers' deranged laugh, to hear a web creative who sounds like a normal human being is a blessed relief. And on the basis of that...

That said, nobody deserves to get scammed this way.

For me, this is the crux of the issue. I just really, really hate to think of basically well-intentioned people who actually give a shit (remember that startling concept?) being taken for all they're worth. I'd like to think that, on reading the script, Bradley thought "fuck it" and decided to give the damn thing no more effort than it deserved. In which case, the man deserves a medal for helping to make this show as lulzy as possible! But that's almost certainly wishful thinking on my part.

*Correction: Devi Evers did an AMA a short while ago, during the course of which she went from cow to normal person then back to cow in under a week. Original suspicion of raging insanty vindicated.

I'm also no expert in animation but unless he's been tweeting or whatever smugly I can kinda forgive his attitude in his demo reel. Animation could be a competitive business and you've gotta present yourself as THE guy or gal to hire. Starting your video with anything else could leave a bad impression and cost you a gig. Considering what he's shown himself capable of I wonder if the trailer is rushed or something. Characters like, protruding from frames seems like an oversight that would only happen if you had an asshole screaming about how he wants it done "now now NOW!" Again, no idea how this business works

Made with a lot of love... :story:

ATHF has Carl. Everything is better with Carl.

Apologies if someone else has already caught this, but that all-seeing eye thing looks like a blatant rip-off of the pyramid dude from Gravity Falls.

OK, Quilliam is also a tranny, hence the dumb name (that was their chosen name)

SORRY FOR THE TEXTWALL, I MISSED A LOT.

The animation reminds me of those really old edutainment PC games that didn't have much of a budget. Like Putt-Putt or Pajama Sam.

Pajama Sam deserves better than to be compared to this garbage.

Shona and Stephie after five minutes of "conversation":

Could have colored it but didn't care enough.

Shit, you made them both really cute! Moe, even! How dare you!

3) Are Hayden and Julie both browsing the farms right now?

I can only hope. Hi, guys!

Hayden has described Gen Zed as "a cross between Spaced and The Young Ones". He's either worryingly naive or incredibly arrogant, and I think I can guess which.

This looks nothing like The Young Ones. Unless this series ends with
everybody dying at the end,
it will have nothing in common with The Young Ones.

Oh, just to play Devil's Advocate for a moment... I do like the background in that shot of the extended family. In fact, all the backgrounds are attractive - and though others may not be as keen, I've always liked the contrast in certain cartoons (such as Watership Down) between pencil/pastel backgrounds and inked characters. Though I'm honestly not sure just how successful the contrast is in this case. (It's hard to tell when the characters are that Goddamn ugly.)

Lilo and Stitch used watercolor backgrounds to great effect. It's partially why the movie looks as gorgeous as it does.

Of course, this is Disney, so they managed to make it work so that the characters don't stick out like sore thumbs against the background.

Well, *DAKKA DAKKA* would have sounded better...

I was thinking "wakka wakka."

Oh, no. For myself, at least, this thing just took an unexpected swerve into sadness territory. I wasn't able to watch the entire video - the wretched thing seemed to take forever to load - but I saw enough of it to feel I'd got a bead on the guy. And you know what? Maybe Gen Zed has softened me up - Mr Bradley could animate doodles he'd drawn with crayons sticking out of his ass and I'd consider it an aesthetic triumph - but I genuinely liked that little demo reel. Like you say, it wasn't anything absolutely incredible, but there were lots of ideas (several of which made me chuckle) - and it seemed (to my eyes, anyway) decently animated. Much more so than Gen Zed. (Though I admit that isn't saying much.) What's worse, though, is...

You know how you hear someone's voice, get a few examples of how they present themselves, what their interests are etc. - and on the basis of this, form an opinion of that individual's personality? Based on his voice, his appearance, the ideas and humour in his demo reel - Alex Bradley seems like a nice, decent person. Certainly he appears to have a real passion for animation - there's more stuff at his website. And based on the little I was able to view (guvking Vimeo - the hipster's choice of video hosting platform) it would appear Mr Bradley cares deeply about his craft. What I guess I'm saying is, he's not Dobson, yeah?

I can't blame the man for accepting the job. His first full-blown animated series! Written and produced by someone who'd previously managed to get their stuff on television! He wouldn't be the first person ever to accept what appeared to be a golden opportunity - and in doing so, bit off more than he could chew. :heart-empty:

Edit: Oh my god, @Ass Manager 3000 - I hadn't realised Bradley's physical similarity to (a younger) Dobson.

Poor, poor bastard. :heart-empty:

I studied animation. His work seems very well suited for web animation, considering I've seen worse on The Escapist or College Humor. Obviously, if this were for television, he would not be the head of animation, and he'd probably be somewhere at a lower level, gaining valuable experience to hone his craft. I think more than anything it's rushed; it very much looks like he's been given some tight deadlines and if he had a team to split the workload between, it could look better. A more experienced web animator would also be a huge boon, as they could use the minimal animation to its fullest potential.

I don't think Bradley deserves the rap he's getting. It's very clear Hayden poured more money into getting those voice actors. And Bradley took the job to bolster his resume and gain experience and from his watercolors, it's clear he has a lot of artistic potential. At the very least, this will be a very valuable learning experience for him.

Apologies if someone else has already caught this, but that all-seeing eye thing looks like a blatant rip-off of the pyramid dude from Gravity Falls.

Anybody else hoping it turns out to be alive and doing a really poor Gordon Cole impression?

Thank you! Well, I don't really like drawing stuff that's gross or overly weird, so played the designs straight.

I agree. Just one guy in his first "high caliber" job. It's a shame it's something this unfunny.
Since the animator doesn't write the jokes, I think we can cut him some slack. Not saying he's deserving of unconditional sympathy, but given the circumstances, he's just an employee. At least the backgrounds are nice.

Also whoever compares his photo to Dobson's self-insert, remember Dobson's self insert has 80% more hair and 80% less body mass than real Dobson, sooo yeah, if anything we can only compare to what Dobson used to want to look like before he turned into Smugbear, Destroyer of Human Balloons.

Wow, this thing is a disaster and I can't wait to see the inevitable trainwreck that will occur.
Because I like wasting my time- I decided to write character descriptions that weren't just flimsy card-board SJW puppets.

-Shona-
Shona is a good-natured and friendly individual who has a charming wit about her. She is currently trying to pursue her lifelong dream of being a stand-up comedian. Her biggest hurdle she faces, though, is her sensitive nature. Having grown up being bullied in school for her status as trans, she has developed a rather fragile ego. Despite this, she wants to succeed at her dream of being a stand-up comedian more then anything else- which will mean learning how to grow a thicker skin.
Some of her likes include science-fiction/fantasy and riffing on bad horror movies.

-Cameron-
Cameron, at first glance, appears to be a loner. Having suffered from severe social anxiety, he currently finds it easier to withdraw from others and spend most of his life online. He often likes to blend into the background and let life pass him by. Those who have actually been able to get close to Cameron would describe him as a kindly, if somewhat awkward/dorky individual. He’s joked about creating an OS that would fall in love with him, but has never actually done that because he realizes how damn stupid it really is. He does have a relationship with a girl online. They never met in real life, though, and the thought of it terrifies him.
Some of his likes include writing poetry and World of Warcraft.

-Huey-
Huey was the middle child from a large family and as such he was always competing with his siblings to get attention. As a result he adopted a rebellious, misanthropic attitude that he carries to this day. His “badass troublemaker” persona has become so much a part of his identity that he doesn’t really know how to conduct himself any other way. His reputation as a “psychopath” has gotten him pretty far (he has everyone’s fearful respect, he get’s all the ladies who want a “bad boy”, etc.), but he deep down knows it’s only a matter of time before his rebelliousness will get him into trouble.
Some of his likes include paintball and clubbing.

-Betsy-
Betsy is a sheltered rich girl who is generally well-intentioned, but not that well-furnished in the brains department. Feeling a sense of guilt over being a “spoiled rich kid” she decided that she would try to adopt the life of “the common man” when she moved out of her parent’s house. While she wants to “earn her way” in the world, she has quickly come to realize how hard it is that would actually be. Due the amount of stress her lifestyle-shift has brought her, she has unfortunately become addicted to prescription drugs. Her life goal is to become a fashion designer.
Some her likes include celebrity gossip and the latest viral cute cat video.

-Taylor-
Taylor works at the same video game store that Cameron works at. She’s a laid-back, sarcastic individual who can come across as unintentionally bitchy. She doesn’t mean to be insulting, she just has a very caustic sense of humor. Feels very strongly about animal welfare.

-Mr. Jiminez-
Mr. Jiminez is their landlord. He comes across as harsh when it comes to paying rent on time. In all reality, he has a large family to take care of and is working hard to not only keep is family afloat, but to also save up enough money to send his kids to college. He also likes his cigars a bit too much.

-Quillam-
Quillam is an other-worldly entity that has come to observe the mortal realm. He has taken particular interest in our four main protagonists as he has determined that they will be perfect vessels for when the Elder Gods will arise again and overtake the Earth.
