Honest question: How do you guys feel about other media that includes Trans Actors playing Trans characters, like "Orange Is The New Black", "Sense8" and "Transparent"?
If they're good actors I'm all for em. Like that other guy said, if they can get a trans person to play a trans character that's great, but if they can't I think it's perfectly fine to use a cis person for the role instead because trans people arent all that common, so finding trans actors would be pretty difficult at times. I'd rather treat them as people and have them earn the role with their talent than to tokenize them and simply give them the role just because they happen to trans like the character.

And besides, you of all people should know how much we like Maddie Blaustein

Depends on the character. The ones you've mentioned were trans actors playing characters. Like, actual characters, as opposed to archetypes, political allegories, or thinly veiled soapboxes.
Basically, we have no issue with trans actors playing trans characters. We have an issue with trans characters that are literally nothing except trans characters, and are put forth to try to score points with the issue of the week crowd.

I've only seen Orange, but the trans representation there is pretty well done. What sets it apart from something like Gen Zed is that the fact a trans actress is on board is not being pushed as the only reason to watch. What sets it apart from something like Assigned Male is that, unlike Stephie, Sophie Burset is a character first, and trans second. This makes her seem like much more of a real person than just a piece of progressive ratings-bait, or a mouth-piece. I am all for trans characters being included in media, but you have to make them an actual character. If your trans-character is obviously just there to rope in the progressive-minded people, or has no interests outside of their gender issues, I'm going to call you out on it.

@JulieRei , if you're looking for other works beyond just television, the video game Nier also features an awesome trans character. I bet you'd find tons of people on KF who can name trans cheracters they're fans of from books or movies or comics or even plays, in addition to television. This is because, like many in this thread have said before, the writing for a character is far more important than meeting a diversity quota. This is universal across all mediums.

Minor sperging but most popular fighting games series have a share of very popular LGBT characters (poison, venom, zangief, brigette, morrigan as example). Fans had a shit fit when capcom tried back tracking on the whole streetfighter/final fight character poison being a pre op MTF character.
Whilst there are plenty of gender neutral or gender fluid races they tend to be portrayed as somewhat feminine or attractive females.

Well this thread was not as bad as I thought it would be. Carry on citizens.

If you look at the king of Fighters roster you'll notice a lot of extremely feminine men that act like total badasses. It's a joke in the community that any woman in the game that doesn't have big tits is usually just a guy. There's also King who was pretty much a transman in earlier games.

A new show (vanity wank project) i wonder which bunch of mugs (talented actors) he talked (tricked) into working for free (differed payment) this time.
Cant wait to see the show (30 second proof of concept trailer and internet backlash after he steals a bunch of mugs money and time).

Just swap and change the bits in brackets to match your own level of cynicism

I really like Claire in Questionable Content.

Gren and Ed from Cowboy Beebop.

The J'naii in The Next Generation did a fantastic job of turning the concept on it's head.

OH! And the whole Cultureverse by Iain M Banks where Gender and physical bodies have little meaning or relevance.

Man. I really love how Hayden and Phil really are becoming a "how not to run this type of business" guide for me. It's so easy to not make these kinds of fuck ups and yet I can watch the results from my comfy chair while sipping a hard cider.

Cheers!

I'm all for diversity in the media.
But there's diversity and then there's tokenism.

@JulieRei , see what I meant about Hayden's questionable business practices?

Fill in the blank for Hayden's new production:

First ever _____ in the history of the web and television!

The table top roleplaying game Eclipse Phase lets you... gosh. I think the term is resleeve. But you can play an uplifted animal in Eclipse Phase, so...

As for Gen Zed, I'm sure it's been said, but the whole series looked like it was tailored made to get people mad and get patreon bux for the creator. Just more proof that we live in this weird outrage culture where you have people that get angry at the drop of a hat because of not muhs and then you have other people that instantly like the thing because the other side is a bunch of neckbearded manchildren and support it despite the fact that it's mediocre at best

SJW term for anyone who wonders where their money went = troll.

@JulieRei, what's your opinion on people and characters who have gender issues but DON'T seek to change their genders? Like, people who don't want to change their gender to 'be themselves' because they just want to be a crossdresser but keep their dick or boobs?

Hayden done fucked up again!

Oh lol. I wonder what it will be about? I hope it a biography about Hayden black getting assaulted by terrorists who he has to outwit to survive.

Tbh its normal for someone to have multiple projects on the go but it's not kosher to constantly promise a project at specific dates and not deliver it. Plus the scam angle couldn't function if gen zed wasn't finished so he's had to do another show as a stopgap.

@Ass Manager 3000 Your Hayden Black flowchart is incredible.
Thanks! It's also super appropriate right now.
First ever _____ in the history of the web and television!

"First ever stroke victim in the history of web and television!"

(Which isn't true but that hasn't stopped Hayden before has it lol)
