It'd mildly dumb because the 12 Apostles were just the top-tier followers. He had thousands at his gatherings (loaves and fishes story) and was the equivalent of a rock star in drawing power. They wouldn't have bothered crucifying his ass if he only had 12 people interested in what he had to say.

And presumably because he wanted to do the IRL equivalent of trying to make the most bizzare looking character in a game you can possibly make.

The joke is supposed to be that 2016 is one of those years where we're getting a bunch of celebrity deaths, like in 2009 with Michael Jackson, Billy Mays, etc., so the year itself is clearly responsible for killing celebrities like Prince and Muhammad Ali. The concept itself isn't entirely unfunny, but since Hayden is, the execution naturally falls flat with him, making the delivery sound like a childlike and "ohsorandumb!!1" attempt at getting attention.
 
People make the same claim every year, though, since any year is going to have a number of celebrities die.

David Bowie was kind of a shock, but even then, that was only because he kept his cancer private. Muhammad Ali had been publicly suffering for decades; it's still sad that he died, but it wasn't in any way a shock, and the positive was that he hung in there for a good long while.

EDIT: Or, to put it another way, I don't think there are too many years when people think, at the end of the year, "Hey, not that many celebrities died this year! Well done, current year!"
