I don't know about web search, but the Windows 10 start menu search is astonishingly bad. I don't know how they get away with shipping something so obviously broken, and it's been like that for years.

If you start typing "documents", the results shown for any intermediate substring ("d", "do", "doc", ...) may as well be random. And hardly any are actually the thing you obviously want: the Documents folder. It's the same for every other search term.

the best is when it shows you what you want, then you go to hit enter and the millisecond before your finger hits the button, it switches to something completely unrelated

Yeah the latency is unbelievable. I don't understand what it's doing. It's easily several hundred milliseconds to refresh for each new character, sometimes many seconds, and this is on an SSD. I don't understand what it's doing that it could be so slow. It's obviously not searching through the whole filesystem, because you can give it the exact name of a file and leave it forever and it'll never find it. It must only be searching through a tiny set of program names and other special locations.

Then compare it to voidtools everything, which can fuzzy search for stuff across the whole filesystem faster than you can blink.

startpage sold out to an adtech company I think
The first three results are ads, but the rest seem okay. No political stuff. DDG is like deep dreaming for nigger Miscegenation and rainbow brigade.

<https://support.startpage.com/index.../View/1260/17/who-are-the-owners-of-startpage> It's some duch ad company.
Well, that was a short lived experiment.

It's just easier to learn Russian at this point.

Bro, if you're looking for a "based free speech" search engine to consider it useful, your bar is way too fuckin' high. Yandex is also censored, it's just uncensored for stuff that the Russians don't care about.

  1. You are a fed because a fed would want me to use search that is captured by five-eyes and you are dissing my choice in Russian BRICS search engine. Your comment is designed to discourage me from changing my habits.
  2. Aside form Mojeek which doesn't actually let you search for nigger, you can search for nigger, just the results suck; old racist books on ebay.
  3. Search engines manipulate the order of the resluts based on perceived utility for the user.
    1. I don't care about Russian elections being a sham, tenant square, polonium assassinations (which seem to work fine).
    2. I do not want to see gay shit, so removing gay shit from results increases their utility for my searching.
    3. When I search nigger, I want niggers to be dumb from Africa and black.
    4. More 'censored' engines have low utility results.

Brave search is now the default on every device I have. With heavy use like that using it for everything (sans images), I have noticed a few hiccups... however google hiccups in exactly the same way and that's really making me thonk.

I really hope Brave isn't just having an ML bot use Google as training data because that's going to make brave equally as useless as Google is now.

It's really only noticable if you use Google. I normally get way better results using Yandex. I wouldn't use Yandex though as it's a Russian service. Searx is probably your best option as you can change what search engines it grabs from.

Throw porn in google images: "Our best guess: lobster dinner" (related images are full of clipart)
Throw porn in yandex images: "Here's the source in 12 image sizes and a lot of related pics you've never even heard of prior"

Ever since google introduced their new "BERT" or whatever the hell they call it, search in general has gotten so awful that I'm officially shifting back to just reading books to find stuff. You can type in the exact keywords, right topic, even the right site and google will frequently just have no idea what the fuck you're talking about. It's literally faster to just get the reference manual of whatever you're trying to find and just read the entire chapter related to what you're looking for. Brave started out superior to google but it's been using "google training data" and as a result it's also been getting worse.

I am not exaggerating. I've been working on Unity editor extensions and the time I have spent downloading and reading entire tutorial books has been less time than trying to search on google in complete futility for WHAT SINGLE FUNCTION CALL I NEED.

How has technology slid backwards THIS hard? How is this even possible? Would zoomers even believe what google was like compared to what it is now? They'd think you were just making shit up.

As hackneyed as it is to say, it's just another case of "the audience is the product". Google Search isn't a search engine, it's a training tool for an AI that pays its volunteers in search results.

Brave's search engine is beyond hot garbage.
It was fucking amazing about 4 months ago. They they trained it with quality data.

One would think a company like google would be competent enough to separate training in queries such as "linux advanced driver configuration" with "how to I get gorilla glue out of my hair"
