There's also talk of Persona 4
I hate that complaint because it's western weirdo projection. Naoto is a girl trying to make it in a man's world, something still going relatively strong in Japan to this day.

Its like the Kanji thing: he's insecure and confused because he thinks being a man is all about being tough but deep down he's a softy who likes to make cute things, with having tomboy he mistakes as a male "hitting on him" confusing him even more. Doesn't mean the man is gay. Just means he's a young man trying to figure things out, quite the nuance and interesting arc when these self congratulatory clowns over here cannot write a character to save their lives.

P5 Royal "fixes" the scene where the effeminate gays hit on one of the characters
Which is pretty accurate and realistic if you've ever been to Shibuya but what would fragile people who can only experience the world through media know?

Their reviews are really god awful. For a website that positions itself as some kind of gaming historians or a retro community, they have zero informational value and are as exciting to read as a generic 'game impressions' posted by a 12-year-old.

That was either written by someone 'self employed' making a living off 'contributions to gaming sites' or a child.

the series is loosely based on the Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin)
Invaluable, these kinds of rare knowledge are hard to find on Google.

In each installment, your army inhabits a fortress - although it is usually a castle, some games also stick you in a tower or a ship. All of these are surrounded by a body of water - after all, this is inspired by the Water Margin story.
Thank you for this information, it's about as useful as a random Wikipedia post.

The most retarded things hg101 like putting in their reviews are 'historical references' :

The stories focus on the tragedies of war, not a particularly distinguishing aspect amongst video game plots

Suikoden avoids the usual JRPG tropes by approaching storytelling with far more maturity than the average JRPG. Unlike other JRPGs, which let the players explore the entire planet, each installment focuses on a particular region.
Vague, generic Neoseeker forums style 'discussion'.

Regular battles are fairly typical turn based JRPG fights. In combat, you'll fight enemies with as many as four to six people. With your entire party carrying out their actions, most of your allies will engage in battle quickly. If you bring certain people to the party, you may enable a so-called unite command. Similar in execution to Chrono Trigger's combined attacks,
Straight from a keyboard of a 12 years old Gamefaqs user circa 2005. Notice how our journalist says that he played an obscure game called CT, which came out the same 1995 year btw. Very impressive and informative.

The visuals and the interface are dated, considering it was released during the early PlayStation era. The graphics in general are very rough and grainy.
Really? I'm sorry you didn't appreciate them in 2009.

Nothing about the art, be it avatars or sprites, nothing about the game's quite unique flavour, the reviewer obv wasn't impressed with the whole fun of recruiting all the characters (basically what this game is all about..). Zero attention to the S2 being a continuation of the original. Zero attention to quirky and charming characters obv. Written by a true fan of jrpgs and gaming history.

How much did you pay those people, Koala?

Sad.

It's hilarious that you bring that up...

and his reason for retweeting that Wolfenstein video?

I used to read this site a lot as a teenager and even then I found it extremely lacking and inconsistent. It was mostly useful for broadening my horizons about games (especially Japanese ones) because they'd write articles about series I'd never heard of before or only heard of in passing. Ys is a good example of that - my only exposure prior to HG101 was an x-play review of VI mocking it for its low-fidelity graphics so getting a more grounded take on the series got me interested enough to play the games and also get interested in Falcom shit in general.

Anyway, I kinda fell off gaming when I went to college and spent the better part of a decade not really playing games. Coming back to it in my late 20s after its faggy Web 2.0 transition was a real shocker.

They are really bad at trying to be a real news source. Almost all of the Japanese games media has blacklisted them so they just review games based on guessing instead of doing real research. Almost like they forgot a real journalist have to do research on games they review. One of the reasons why even ex-fans hate them now.

In hindsight I'm especially impressed on how shitty their coverage of the Langrisser series was back in the day.

I'll use IV for my example because I just finished playing it a week ago.

In general, Kurt here offers only the most basic overview of the actual gameplay here. While some of what's important to know about this game was done back in the intro for the entire series, he completely fails to mention how this game has, say, class trees that can let you play every character in different ways, or the fact that while the game is pretty damn hard at times, it's also very fair and feels rewarding when you can figure out how to beat a map.

I'm much more pissed on how fucking little he says about the story or characters.

Keep in mind the english fan translation for this game didn't exist yet, but I'd expect a website claiming to be about obscure games to have an article written by someone who's actually fluent in the language and actually played through the game entirely.

I know they didn't from the very first paragraph.

"They watch helpless as their friend, Rachel, is stolen away."

You mean their adopted sister, which the game tells you straight out several times.

"The plotline is far removed from the first three games, although it does tie together with Langrisser V."

Except that it actually follows on from the second game in all three possible routes. Granted the connection only becomes clear about halfway through, so I'm assuming Kurt didn't bother playing more than the beginning.

"Landis's friend refers to him as "aniue", a very respectful term for "big brother", although they aren't related."

Again, she calls him that literally because he is one of her adopted brothers. Not even going to commit on the shitty attempt at translating.

"Rachel also refers to Landis as her "oniichan" or "big brother", although it's meant to be more cutesy than out of respect."

Not only that, but she's actually more respectful towards Landius than she is to Ricky, so this is objectivly wrong and this motherfucker is a retard.

"A young princess, Angelina is a tough warrior who fights on a flying horse and is protected by fairies. Her and her sister travel along with a strategist named Wheeler - who is a total wuss, but you never get to control him anyway."

I mean unless you reclass her like I did into a foot solider, which I'm sure Kurt never did. Also Willer is actually just a polite, humble man who is very concerned about the safety of his friends and the common man, but I'd guess you'd have to play the game and actually understand what you are reading to figure that out.

"He's actually a cyborg (?!?!) who's lost his memory, and wants to unleash vengeance upon the person who turned him into such a monster.

Fairly accurate, but you also somehow forgot to mention he also angered about the disappearance of his sister, which is actually kinda a big fucking deal to his character arc, especially in V.

And that's entirely all he says bascially. He doesn't mention any other of the numerous interesting characters in the game like Giszarof, Lanford, Selena, Kreuger, Emily, Listell, King Caconis...

Nor does he mention how the plot is actually very interesting and much more plausible than a lot of other games of it's kind in the era. He also doesn't mention how IV improved on every character in your party having a unique voice and role in the story from III (which I mean that game is pretty excellent too but it really couldn't make everyone stick out like in this one since you have 10 and above playable characters for most of the game). And while he does mention how the romance elements introduced in III were brought over to this one, he fails to mention how this entry makes figuring out the right choices for the lady of your choice much more intuitive and natural.

Fucking worthless article, actually got more mad than I should rereading this. Fuck me though, this game (and the series it's attached too) is actually fantastic and deserve better though.

These retards sure love to infest the gaming community with their politics instead of using that free time to write and polish their articles more thoroughly. They might as well be a bargain-bin version of Kotaku at this point.
That is what they are. Some of my friends thought their articles are cool. But as you fact check each of them. They are riddled with lies and inconsistencies. They are literally misinformation network for gaming and very bad actors at best.

It's unfortunate since they have potential to be good with all of their countless game articles but laziness and political sperging happened. Nowadays, I avoid the site like the plague. Any nerd site in general who pushes their politics first and lectures their audience is a warning sign to stay away from it for good.
