Except it wasn't 343 it was Bungie during the Halo 3 era. And shitty lore being replaced by good lore and good stories, the Forerunner saga written by Greg Bear, is an acceptable outcome in my opinion.
Are you kidding me? 343's new lore and the Forerunner Saga proved the Covenant to be right. The humans are enemies of their gods, the Forerunners, and if the Forerunners lived during the Human-Covenant War, they'd be cheering the Covenant on as they glass one human world after another.
The main tragedy of the Human-Covenant War was that, to cover up the humans being Forerunners, the Covenant leadership lied to their people and told them that the humans were enemies of their gods, when in reality, the humans WERE their gods made flesh. The Covenant were killing their own gods because their leaders lied to them, fearing that if the truth came out, they'd be replaced by what their religion would consider living gods.
Not from any of the Bungie games, that's the point.

There being any distinction at all is retarded 343 retcon bullshit.
Like I said, the original Bungie lore made Forerunners and humans into the same species.
The House of the Forerunners, which the Covenant had kept and maintained for some time, was to be passed down to the Reclaimers, living descendants of the Forerunners, since the Forerunners decreed it, to the point where human touch activates Forerunner technology. 343 Guilty Spark even outright calls John-117 a Forerunner, killing any doubts on whether or not humans are Forerunners.
But after 343 Industries' retcons? Fuck, the Covenant were right about their gods hating mankind. The Forerunners hate mankind and would've happily blasted them back to the stone age. Hell, they even turned the humans into shit-flinging monkeys as a punishment. Or vaporized them and turned them into digital knights. The great tragedy of the Human Covenant War becomes a sick joke when you consider that if the Didact from Halo 4 awakened during the Human-Covenant War, he'd happily take his throne as the Covenant's living god, take charge of their war against mankind, and openly cheer for them every time they turn a human world into glass.
