Guilty Pleasure Games - It's bad but you still like it

Games that suck or have a bad reputation but you still enjoy, whether it's for ironic or genuine reasons.


Kane and Lynch 2 was a very buggy mess of a game with a divisive found-footage aesthetic. This meant that whenever you ran in the game the camera would have an exaggerated moving animation that would look like the cameraman is running with the main character. Many people HATED it for being disorientating and headache-inducing. I can understand completely why people didn't like it. But from an art direction and style perspective, I thought it was very cool idea that was executed poorly.



Fallout 3 is the game that everyone likes to take a shit on for "not being a real RPG game", having a piss filter, not having quests outside of finding your father, or weapons not being fun to use. I know it isn't the best fallout game, but because it was my first that I grew up with, I have a nostalgia for the D.C. setting, and I didn't think the gameplay was that bad. Obviously it isn't as good as New Vegas.

War wind 2: human onslaught. It was a 1997 rts, so just after age of empires but a year before starcraft. It included carrying over units throughout the campaign, 4 different races, destroyed vehicles placed on the map that you could repair and then use, a novel economy where you recruited your workers from neutral npcs and more.

It was however super clunky, and functionally only had campaign or human vs human. The Ai was more retarded than dsp and could not actually function in the skirmish modes. Not just ‘too easy’ but couldn’t interact with the economy and locks itself out of resources in the first 10 seconds retarded.

Still, super innovative for its time. Unfortunately being sandwiched by AoE & SC which were less complex and a lot more polished really killed any shot it had.

Deadly Premonition is the definition of a guilty pleasure. Imagine Twin Peaks viewed through the eyes of a Japanese man as you play as former punk rocker turned detective Francis York Morgan (everyone calls him York) as you solve a murder case.

Gauntlet Legends. It's only an average game, but between N64 and the arcade, I must have played that fucking game for 250-300 hours.

Come to think of it, I'd put a lot of late 90s Midway games on my list of guilty pleasure games. Crusin' World, NBA Hangtime, Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey, Rampage World Tour, etc. They're mindless and repetitive without being outright poorly made.

I hate playing western AAA slop, and I fucking despise mmorpg looter shooters, but man, there's something about The Division and The Division 2 that just makes me come back to them from time to time. The atmosphere of abandoned NYC and Washington D.C. is just something else; they really portrayed those cities so well. And even though these games have been out for some time, the graphics can still look good and realistic. The gameplay is just alright, not the greatest but not something anyone would get offended by.

The reason why I would call this series of games a "guilty pleasure" without getting into details, is that it's made by Ubisoft, so you probably know what I mean.
I also recommend skipping most of the cutscenes and dialog in this game since it's riddled with all kinds of millennial-esque faggy cliches. Just a heads-up.

why it bad
uses the infamously bad dx7 (now requires a vudu gfx container to even properly run compat mode to run on modern hardware and even with a beefy pc that can play fireworks mania on 700 fps @ 2560x1440 it still lags like hell)
has insanely low resolution & texture fidelity & polygon count even when on max graphics (i actually have a modded xml file that lets me change resolution to 1600x900 but you get the point - this game runs on 640x480 by default)
constantly complains about heap overrun and crash/exits
no dedicated mod manager program so do it yourself and resolve/testfor mod conflicts yourself

why i likey
fun pastime with other bus nerds (well i use mods duhh)
rta in somewhat realistic locations with somewhat realistic vehicles (dont try that in real life)
nobody complains if i drink and drive (ok fine there are cops in this game but i mean you can turn it off if ur poosi, but ok, anyway)
i dont want to crack omsi cuz lazy so this game will do

Two Worlds, it's objectively an awful game in so many ways but I can't help but find it immeasurably charming. It has the same kind of soul as a retarded, crippled child that's attempting to run in a marathon. And if you're willing to turn your brain off you can actually have a lot of fun with the completely broken leveling, open factions, and overall schizophrenic game design.

Puzzle league is one of those childhood games I play and remember good moments from when I was younger but its objectively a pretty mid tetris esque game. And TF2 pre-2012ish was amazing. Then the bronies infested it and it's been a dogshit game ever since that I'll install once a year and play for a few hours to get my rocket jumping fix.

Just play Tale of Two Wastelands, you'll have the entirety of Fallout 3 inside New Vegas with all benefits of both games.

It's made by an autistic weirdo for other autistic weirdos but the actual gameplay makes up for it. Having to look at the dev's septum piercing while I play is a bit of a downside however.
