Truck hits Native American crowd during Columbus Day protest in Nevada; no arrest yet

RENO, Nev. - |The founder of a Native American rights group that was rallying in Reno, Nevada, when a pickup truck plowed through protesters wants to know why police haven’t arrested the driver.
One woman remained hospitalized Tuesday with non-life threatening injuries. Four others suffered minor injuries Monday night in what one witness described as a hate crime.
Another said two men in the truck had been yelling obscenities at the protesters earlier in the day.
A Facebook Live video of the protest shows a pickup truck revving its engine in front of the crowd in Reno’s downtown. Several protesters confronted the driver and the passenger before the truck drives through the crowd at about 6:40 p.m. Monday.
The driver of the white Nissan pickup stopped several blocks away and called police “to provide his account of the events,” Reno Police Sgt. James Pitsnogel said in a statement early Tuesday. The driver and a passenger were interviewed and are cooperating, he said. No other details were released.
CBS Reno affiliate KTVN-TV reports that the 40 or so gathered protesters did not have a permit, and that protesters said they were there supporting the nationwide movement to abolish Columbus Day and to bring awareness to hate against indigenous people.
Mike Graham, founder of the Oklahoma-based United Native American Association, said he planned to meet with Reno police Tuesday to find out more about the incident.
“We are truly upset that he is not in custody. He left the scene of an accident,” he told The Associated Press.
“It was a hate crime,” Quanah Brightman, executive director of San Francisco-based United Native Americans Inc., told the Reno Gazette-Journal. The protesters were speaking out against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota when the truck approached, she said.
One of the witnesses who posted video on Facebook Live said the two men in the pickup had been “stalking the protest” at the original site where the activists had gathered two blocks away.
“They drove by once as we were walking toward the arch, yelling obscenities,” said Taylor Wayman, 27, who said he was not an official member of the sponsoring groups but decided to attend the rally.
“I heard the driver ask one of the protesters, ‘do you want me to kill your homies?’ and that really set everybody off,” Wayman told AP on Tuesday.
“I think they felt threatened, the protesters felt threatened. It escalated from there and that’s when it happened,” he said.
“It was disturbing. The young man was very, very calm as he pressed the accelerator. I’ve never seen anything like it and I won’t forget that,” Wayman said.
Graham was in Reno for the protest but wasn’t present when the truck drove through.
“Everything that I’ve gathered from the people who were there is that the individual knew what was going on,” Graham said Tuesday. “He did not like it and he chose to charge forward knowing people were in front of the vehicle. It can’t be justified as anything other than he has a racial problem with Indians.”
Some of the protestors decided to upload videos of the incident to the internet in hopes of finding this vicious criminal. Problem is they show a slightly different version of events.
Now I don't like seeing people get hurt, but if you do something like this (or hang around people who do), then my sympathy is limited.

Even though i pretty much agree with their argument against Colombus Day, this has always been a completely stupid way to protest, no matter what you are arguing for. Who would have thought:
Blocking traffic illegally+ insulting drivers = getting driven through? Honestly they're lucky the driver didnt have a worse temper. This could have been a bloodbath.

They weren't just insulting him. One of them was trying to break into the car and drag him out, whereupon he'd have probably been stomped like Reginald Denny. He had every right to defend himself.

And litter everything with beer cans.

I don't have a problem with the protest in general (you should be allowed to publicly voice your opinion, no matter how exceptional it is), but breaking unrelated laws and threatening people who are upset about your unlawful activity is taking things too far.
you know how we'll make people sympathetic to our cause?
by annoying them and making our side look like stupid shits!

by threatening random people and making our side look violent... it's working for the blacks!

It missed this one, which is fucking gold all the way through the video.

Fuck da police! oh shit, call the cops call da amberlamps!

The person driving turned out to actually a black woman who got distracted by the other protesters. Great job there by all the protesters and whoever decided to start shooting at the car, totally not making the whole thing worse at all. The woman wanted to call 911 but had to drive a few miles away for fear of her life.

I propose a compromise. We keep Columbus Day, a day no one cares about or even remembers until someone whines (except I think Italians-Americans? I think they give a shit for some reason) and we add Injun Day.
On Injun Day, we just sit around and drink.

Fun Fact: In South Dakota (and maybe other states, but I know SD for certain since I used to live there), Columbus Day is already called Native American Day. Not Injun Day, of course. Have to make it politically correct and designate them into their own special check box.

But in all cases, no one gives a shit about the day unless you work in a federal office, in which you get to schlepp off for a few hours.

It was renamed Indigenous Peoples Day here in Minnesota (in the Twin Cities at least, outside cities still call it Columbus Day)

I wouldn't be against ending Columbus Day... another arbitrary day the post office isn't open and being bombarded by radio ads for mattress store sales doesn't count as a "holiday" to me.

And protestors seem to forget that their right to protest rests on it being a peaceful and legal one, once you start breaking the law, no cry of free speech will save you.

It's amazing how many people don't get this, and honestly think the First Amendment means you can light someone's car on fire if your motivation was purely political......

I'd be fine with renaming it to something else. Columbus was even considered a dick while he was alive.
