Why is Greta Thunberg so triggering? How can a 16-year-old girl in plaits, who has dedicated herself to the not-exactly sinister, authoritarian plot of trying to save the planet from extinction, inspire such incandescent rage?

Last week, she tweeted that she had arrived into New York after her two week transatlantic voyage: “Finally here. Thank you everyone who came to see me off in Plymouth, and everyone who welcomed me in New York! Now I’m going to rest for a few days, and on Friday I’m going to participate in the strike outside the UN”, before promptly giving a press conference in English. Yes, her second language.

Her remarks were immediately greeted with a barrage of jibes about virtue signalling, and snide remarks about the three crew members who will have to fly out to take the yacht home.

This shouldn’t need to be spelled out, but as some people don’t seem to have grasped it yet, we’ll give it a lash: Thunberg’s trip was an act of protest, not a sacred commandment or an instruction manual for the rest of us. Like all acts of protest, it was designed to be symbolic and provocative. For those who missed the point – and oh, how they missed the point – she retweeted someone else’s “friendly reminder” that: “You don’t need to spend two weeks on a boat to do your part to avert our climate emergency. You just need to do everything you can, with everyone you can, to change everything you can.”

Part of the reason she inspires such rage, of course, is blindingly obvious. Climate change is terrifying. The Amazon is burning. So too is the Savannah. Parts of the Arctic are on fire. Sea levels are rising. There are more vicious storms and wildfires and droughts and floods. Denial is easier than confronting the terrifying truth.

Then there’s the fact that we don’t like being made to feel bad about our life choices. That’s human nature. It’s why we sneer at vegans. It’s why we’re suspicious of sober people at parties. And if anything is likely to make you feel bad about your life choices -- as you jet back home after your third Ryanair European minibreak this season – it’ll be the sight of small-boned child subjecting herself to a fortnight being tossed about on the Atlantic, with only a bucket bearing a “Poo Only Please” sign by way of luxury, in order to make a point about climate change.

But that’s not virtue signalling, which anyone can indulge in. As Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and their-four-private-jets-in-11-days found recently, virtue practising is a lot harder.

Even for someone who spends a lot of time on Twitter, some of the criticism levelled at Thunberg is astonishing. It is, simultaneously, the most vicious and the most fatuous kind of playground bullying. The Australian conservative climate change denier Andrew Bolt called her “deeply disturbed” and “freakishly influential” (the use of “freakish”, we can assume, was not incidental.) The former UKIP funder, Arron Banks, tweeted “Freaking yacht accidents do happen in August” (as above.) Brendan O’Neill of Spiked called her a “millenarian weirdo” (nope, still not incidental) in a piece that referred nastily to her “monotone voice” and “the look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes”.

But who’s the real freak – the activist whose determination has single-handedly started a powerful global movement for change, or the middle-aged man taunting a child with Asperger syndrome from behind the safety of their computer screens?

And that, of course, is the real reason why Greta Thunberg is so triggering. They can’t admit it even to themselves, so they ridicule her instead. But the truth is that they’re afraid of her. The poor dears are terrified of her as an individual, and of what she stands for – youth, determination, change.

She is part of a generation who won’t be cowed. She isn’t about to be shamed into submission by trolls. That’s not actually a look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes. It’s a look that says “you’re not relevant”.

The reason they taunt her with childish insults is because that’s all they’ve got. They’re out of ideas. They can’t dismantle her arguments, because she has science – and David Attenborough – on her side. They can’t win the debate with the persuasive force of their arguments, because these bargain bin cranks trade in jaded cynicism, not youthful passion. They can harangue her with snide tweets and hot take blogposts, but they won’t get a reaction because, frankly, she has bigger worries on her mind.

That’s not to say that we should accept everything Thunberg says without question. She is an idealist who is young enough to see the world in black and white. We need voices like hers. We should listen to what she has to say, without tuning the more moderate voices of dissent out.

Why is Greta Thunberg so triggering? Because of what she represents. In an age when democracy is under assault, she hints at the emergency of new kind of power, a convergence of youth, popular protest and irrefutable science. And for her loudest detractors, she also represents something else: the sight of their impending obsolescence hurtling towards them.

Ha, as much as right wingers (like me) don't like Greta, I just knew it would be her so-called allies who'd come up with the most pathetic way to denigrate her: she's too white! Call the skin tone police!
She could be a Bisexual, trans, mentally and physically handicapped PEEEEEEEEE-OOOOOO-CCCCCCCCC and they'd still find a way to find something wrong with her.

I like how those people are showing off their narcissism and clear inability to connect with people beyond physical appearance while trying to be "woke" and "politically correct". If you need someone to have the same ethnic background/nationality as you to "uplift" and convince you to support a cause then I really question how these people can operate in every day life.
It seems that Greta's whiteness is a problem.

"Millennia"? Your average person centuries ago did not one rats ass about the rising sea levels and the earth heating up and whatever stuff that these people keep mentioning 24/7.

Whitey needs to get out of the way, bigot. Not intersectional enough.

So my suspicions were correct... Extremely correct.

In a very short time, Greta Thunberg—with her searing stare, Pippi Longstocking braids, and hand-painted sign reading SKOLSTREJK FÖR KLIMATET

Greta is for real. She has a composure about her that is deadly serious and strangely at odds with her Pippi Longstocking plait

Like her school-skipping compatriot Pippi Longstocking,

This has fostered a generation of young people who express their opinions, are listened to and speak up to claim their rights, from Pippi Longstocking to Greta Thunberg.

In fact, it took a 15-year-old girl from Sweden, with braids reminiscent of Pippi Longstocking, to spell it out.

Pippi and @GretaThunberg are two Swedish peas in a pod. Greta would definitely be invited to Villa Villekulla for pancakes and tree climbing. #FridaysForFuture #FollowFriday

Maybe this is jsut an obvious comparison or just more confirmation that journalists are plagiarizing hacks but it seems strange to me. Didn't archive cause its not really important just my dumb theory.

Sounds like an interesting read. Any news sources?

adults using an autistic child to push an agenda. I might take them serious if they were promoting nuclear. but no. they are promoting the lies of wind and solar.

I'd take her even more seriously if she was a science type Rain man and stayed in school to learn environmental engineering and meteorological physics.

It's not like hes got the only carbon exchange scheme.

Thats what "carbon credits" enable. They're all just trying to make money off this.
It's more than just that. The Power Elites want to dishonestly use the real threat of climate change to exercise political control with a dishonest justification. This excellent article was mentioned on an interview I listened to today, and offers probably a more comprehensive look at the people behind the Greta phenomenon than anything else I've read.
https://archive.li/xQ6x4

It's a bit preachy and does contain some silly environmentalist bugbears about things like nuclear power- which the scum behind these organizations like 'We Don’t Have Time' and 'Extinction Rebellion' don't even promote- but otherwise is very good.

If you want to look at concrete, real-world examples of how the Traditional Enemies of the Truth are using environmentalist rhetoric to exert political power, the ridiculous attempts by the CIA-sponsored regime change operatives in Bolivia and the Guardian and other neo-liberal media operatives to claim Bolivia's president Evo Morales is to blame for the Amazon fires are a great example.

Despite the fact that the vast majority of fires were started in Brazil, and the fact that Morales has conducted a far more comprehensive response to those fires which started in Bolivia or spread over from Brazil and other neighbouring countries than others have, the CIA and other neoliberal forces are trying to claim his populist government was at fault for the fires.

The short of it is that Greta has been working with an organization called We Don't Have Time since at least 2018, which is essentially a marketing organization. Their premise is to allow for the rating of individuals and organizations based on perceived eco-friendliness, and then if said entity receives a bad rating, WDHT will notify them and ask them for money in return for PR assistance.

The article's a bit long and full of talk about FUCKING WHITE MALES but it's nonetheless an amusing take on the whole thing, and they're spot on with how this is all just marketing and extortion game. They also make a good point about the actual effects of such a venture;
The not unintended results will be tenfold. The corporations with the best advertising executives and largest budgets will be the winners. Greenwashing will become an unprecedented method of advertising as will the art of “storytelling” (no one ever said a story has to be true). Small or local businesses with little financial means will more than often be the losers. Especially hit, will be migrant entrepreneurs whose cultures differ from ours in the West – where “Western democracy” is the only democracy that is valid.
muh migrants, muh norities

This Ingmar Rentzhog meeting on the 20th of August, 2018 seems really coincidental. So If we're to believe Greta when she says (https://archive.li/kLVgd)...
On the 20 of august I sat down outside the Swedish Parliament. I handed out fliers with a long list of facts about the climate crisis and explanations on why I was striking. The first thing I did was to post on Twitter and Instagram what I was doing and it soon went viral. Then journalists and newspapers started to come. A Swedish entrepreneur and business man active in the climate movement, Ingmar Rentzhog, was among the first to arrive. He spoke with me and took pictures that he posted on Facebook. That was the first time I had ever met or spoken with him. I had not communicated or encountered with him ever before.

...then Ingmar 'just happened to be strolling past', noticed a girl sitting outside the Swedish Parliament, and just decided to tweet about it (https://archive.li/AmXA0):
ingmartweet.png
And also make an Instagram post about it:
ingmarinstagram.png
And also make a Facebook post about it from the WeDontHaveTime.org Facebook page (https://archive.li/VZl41):
ingmarfacebook1.png
With the following video, fully-edited for maximum feels optics:

And also make a second Facebook post from his personal page (https://archive.li/1us20), where I've Google-translated the screenshot here for your viewing convenience/hilarity:

And all of this on that one day, August 20th 2018, for someone he'd just met?

The fact that Jeremy Clarkson is only 59, is more disturbing to me than what he says about Greta.

'Be a good girl, shut up' - Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson unleashes on Greta Thunberg
  • 2 hours ago

  • Monika Barton
  • Reddit

Former Top Gear host Jeremy Clarkson has launched a tirade against 16-year-old climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

The outspoken 59-year-old lambasted Thunberg in an article for UK tabloid The Sun following her impassioned plea at the United Nations Climate Change Summit last week.
"I'm sorry Ms Thunberg, but if you're going to lay into my generation, you must accept it when I lay into you and yours," he wrote.
"We gave you mobile phones and laptops and the internet. We created the social media you use every day and we run the banks that pay for it all," he added.
"So how dare you stand there and lecture us, you spoilt brat."
Using Thunberg's own "how dare you" war cry from her speech, Clarkson attempted to dismantle her argument by pointing a finger at her family sailing boat.
"How dare you sail to America on a carbon fibre yacht that you didn't build which cost £15million, that you didn’t earn, and which has a back-up diesel engine that you didn't mention," he said.
Clarkson said Thunberg should "shut up" on two different occasions, calling her UN appearance a "full-on adolescent meltdown".
The controversial television presenter demanded Thunberg go back to school and study hard in her science classes.
"Many thousands of people who you had the temerity to blame this week are trying to do exactly what you want," he wrote.
"So be a good girl, shut up and let them get on with it."

Finally, appearing to adopt a faux-father figure approach, Clarkson concluded: "And no. You cannot stay out past 10. And you cannot go out in a skirt that short."

No, Louis Vuitton handbags for Greta. That right there is where the real punishment is.

Billionaire French luxury brand boss accuses teen climate activist Greta Thunberg of 'catastrophism'

The billionaire boss of the company behind brands such as Christan Dior, Givenchy and Louis Vuitton has laid into teen climate activist Greta Thunberg, accusing her of "demoralising" young people by embracing "catastrophism".
French businessman Bernard Arnault - the world's second richest man - made the comments at his own company’s sustainability event in Paris this week.

The 70-year-old Arnault is worth $A161 billion and is now wealthier than either Bill Gates or Warren Buffet.
His company Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy - known as LVMH - owns some of the world's most exclusive brands.
"She’s a dynamic young girl, but she’s surrendering completely to catastrophism," Arnault said at an event in Paris on Wednesday.
"I find that her views are demoralising for young people."
Arnault's comments came just days after Thunberg took aim at world leaders during a fiery speech to the United Nations in which she accused them of not doing enough to address climate change.
“We are in the beginning of mass extinction, and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth,” Thunberg said.
However, Arnault took issue with Thunberg's criticism of the ecomomic growth model which had lifted billions out of poverty and that Thunberg's criticism "offers nothing".
“If we don’t want to go backwards, we still need growth," he said.
"(Economic growth) has helped to improve world living standards, reduce poverty, improve health in countries like Africa. If we want to go back, stop growth."

“I prefer positive solutions that allow us to get towards a more optimistic position,” Arnault added.
He also used the event to talk up LVMH initiaitves which included introducing processes around tracking raw materials to ensure sustainability and a reduction of CO2 emissions.
The company says is will obtain more than 30 per cent of its energy needs from reneweables by 2020 and cut CO2 output by 25 per cent at the same time.

I'd take her even more seriously if she was a science type Rain man and stayed in school to learn environmental engineering and meteorological physics.
If that were the case she'd be begging people to invest in nuclear rather than be the tool of the solar and wind conglomerates.

This shit is Harold Camping all over again, and this time I don't even get the fun of calling my fundie cousins 2 days after the rapture was supposed to happen and asking why they're still here.

I personally hate it when adults use children and force them into a political ideology and narrative.

Am I the only one who hears "both her and her sister were diagnosed with Autism" and has the biggest fucking X to doubt ever? Autism is rare as fuck in girls. Two in the same generation?

Sounds to me they just have a couple of spoiled brat kids and figured Internet Assburgers was the easiest way to deal with it.

Her parents are 48 and 50 which suggests they had Greta when they already wasn't "fresh", much like in case of our beloved CWC, but I also lean towards the claims she has fetal alcohol syndrome, she just doesn't have that asspie face like others, hers is disfigured much like randi harper's and other cows with FAS.
Here is one more thing though, people feel sad for her, but they shouldn't,at this point this girls is just as deranged as all the SJW flocking to her, she's full of hate and vitriol.
