Why is Greta Thunberg so triggering? How can a 16-year-old girl in plaits, who has dedicated herself to the not-exactly sinister, authoritarian plot of trying to save the planet from extinction, inspire such incandescent rage?

Last week, she tweeted that she had arrived into New York after her two week transatlantic voyage: “Finally here. Thank you everyone who came to see me off in Plymouth, and everyone who welcomed me in New York! Now I’m going to rest for a few days, and on Friday I’m going to participate in the strike outside the UN”, before promptly giving a press conference in English. Yes, her second language.

Her remarks were immediately greeted with a barrage of jibes about virtue signalling, and snide remarks about the three crew members who will have to fly out to take the yacht home.

This shouldn’t need to be spelled out, but as some people don’t seem to have grasped it yet, we’ll give it a lash: Thunberg’s trip was an act of protest, not a sacred commandment or an instruction manual for the rest of us. Like all acts of protest, it was designed to be symbolic and provocative. For those who missed the point – and oh, how they missed the point – she retweeted someone else’s “friendly reminder” that: “You don’t need to spend two weeks on a boat to do your part to avert our climate emergency. You just need to do everything you can, with everyone you can, to change everything you can.”

Part of the reason she inspires such rage, of course, is blindingly obvious. Climate change is terrifying. The Amazon is burning. So too is the Savannah. Parts of the Arctic are on fire. Sea levels are rising. There are more vicious storms and wildfires and droughts and floods. Denial is easier than confronting the terrifying truth.

Then there’s the fact that we don’t like being made to feel bad about our life choices. That’s human nature. It’s why we sneer at vegans. It’s why we’re suspicious of sober people at parties. And if anything is likely to make you feel bad about your life choices -- as you jet back home after your third Ryanair European minibreak this season – it’ll be the sight of small-boned child subjecting herself to a fortnight being tossed about on the Atlantic, with only a bucket bearing a “Poo Only Please” sign by way of luxury, in order to make a point about climate change.

But that’s not virtue signalling, which anyone can indulge in. As Meghan Markle, Prince Harry, and their-four-private-jets-in-11-days found recently, virtue practising is a lot harder.

Even for someone who spends a lot of time on Twitter, some of the criticism levelled at Thunberg is astonishing. It is, simultaneously, the most vicious and the most fatuous kind of playground bullying. The Australian conservative climate change denier Andrew Bolt called her “deeply disturbed” and “freakishly influential” (the use of “freakish”, we can assume, was not incidental.) The former UKIP funder, Arron Banks, tweeted “Freaking yacht accidents do happen in August” (as above.) Brendan O’Neill of Spiked called her a “millenarian weirdo” (nope, still not incidental) in a piece that referred nastily to her “monotone voice” and “the look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes”.

But who’s the real freak – the activist whose determination has single-handedly started a powerful global movement for change, or the middle-aged man taunting a child with Asperger syndrome from behind the safety of their computer screens?

And that, of course, is the real reason why Greta Thunberg is so triggering. They can’t admit it even to themselves, so they ridicule her instead. But the truth is that they’re afraid of her. The poor dears are terrified of her as an individual, and of what she stands for – youth, determination, change.

She is part of a generation who won’t be cowed. She isn’t about to be shamed into submission by trolls. That’s not actually a look of apocalyptic dread in her eyes. It’s a look that says “you’re not relevant”.

The reason they taunt her with childish insults is because that’s all they’ve got. They’re out of ideas. They can’t dismantle her arguments, because she has science – and David Attenborough – on her side. They can’t win the debate with the persuasive force of their arguments, because these bargain bin cranks trade in jaded cynicism, not youthful passion. They can harangue her with snide tweets and hot take blogposts, but they won’t get a reaction because, frankly, she has bigger worries on her mind.

That’s not to say that we should accept everything Thunberg says without question. She is an idealist who is young enough to see the world in black and white. We need voices like hers. We should listen to what she has to say, without tuning the more moderate voices of dissent out.

Why is Greta Thunberg so triggering? Because of what she represents. In an age when democracy is under assault, she hints at the emergency of new kind of power, a convergence of youth, popular protest and irrefutable science. And for her loudest detractors, she also represents something else: the sight of their impending obsolescence hurtling towards them.

Found this thought-provoking indeed.

One can agree that a community having a trash pickup day along the highway is a good thing and still believe that carbon credits are nothing but a money laundering scam.

Do I believe littering is good? No, fuck no. But it's pretty damn hard to take "environmentalists" seriously when they can't even hold a rally without littering.

Then there's the law of diminished returns. Lets say your local government requires you to get a filter for your water. It initially costs $15/month to get to 1/1000 of bad things the government says you need to be protected from. Most people could probably afford that. Then they say you need to upgrade to the $50/month filter that reduces it to 1 parts per million. Still affordable-ish for most households, but some are going to feel a pinch. Then it's changed again to a $200/month filter to get to 1 parts per billion. That's going to be painful for a number of people. Then it's changed to a $3000/month filter to get it down to 1 part per trillion.

That's basically what happened in manufacturing. And why a number said "fuck it, lets move to this place that only requires the $15 filter. The cost of moving will be covered by not having to pay $3000/month". Thus pollution increases elsewhere.

She doesn’t trigger me, she annoys me. Her climate alarmism is only used for western countries, but she won’t criticize India and China (the world’s biggest polluters).
This. Not to power-level, but I've been to Europe, India, and North America. The way that south asians and westerners see environmentalism is completely different. In India they throw trash around like it's nobody's business and the air is so dirty that it will turn your snot black and keep it black for a week or two after you return home.
She really doesn't look like an average 16 year old, her vegan diet is probably partly to blame.
Does this look like a healthy 16 year old girl?

She looks like the ideal body type of what the Luciferian global elite probably find attractive.
I feel called out.

Because shes an actual retarded kid being used by corrupt people in charge to demand her viewpoint which has at least here in Sweden turned into a downright religion for insane leftsist who have become apocalyptical enligtened truthers. The parade is obnoxious and the way it’s ultimately used to shame the western world over collective guilt while ignoring what eg China is doing and ultimately as a distraction from real issues like the insane rising crime rate in Sweden and mass population replacement who then generally votes for socialist and welfare stuff thus giving a reason to increase taxes and ultimately continue the degrade of our society.

I could go on and on, such as how her mom is a batshit insane social justice type, her connection with international pr agencies in both Sweden and ambroad, how her daughter was failing in School and has started to get severe delusions and so on. It is insanely obnoxious and i am sick and tired of all critique being delfected of as ”She’s being a child”(when funnily enough she can bang legally over here) it is scarily cult like and a downright hysteria in Sweden for these deluded kids and i’m sick of it. There’s SO much more that could be said but heres a vid of it.

Reminds me a LOT of Kony 2012 btw, the whole ”privileged westeners are here to save the world” it’s cringy and obnoxious.

EDIT; This is not an argument for or against climate change. I think it’s obvious to everyone that taking care of the enviroment is important but the cult of climate change is another thing.

U.S. conservationists and environmentalists are why it's not like this here. Why would we want to become more like third world shitholes? If anything we should be forcing them to be more like us.

Not gonna bother replying to the rest of the message because I know I won't change any minds, but I love how y'all discredit people who are passionate about certain issues as being "moralfags." I'll take being a moralfag over an apathetic slacker any day. The world never changed because people threw up their hands and gave up.
That's not what you're being moralfags about and you know it. You're being moralfags over the fact that people on the shitposting part of a shitposting forum are making funny shitposts picking on her that she nor anyone associated with her will ever see.

Oh no. God forbid someone crack a sarcastic joke about a 'poor 16 year old autistic child' on a website that hosts video from mass shootings because 'that's not funny guyz.' Yeah we really gotta keep people from lashing out at the extremely obnoxious figureheads of two-faced hegemonic power with *gasps* humor.

Not really though in this case. The girl might seem "normal" but don't forget she is a complete full-on aspie. You might think she's a mild case, but do remember that this girl was essentially fully psychotic at one point because of "climate".

This is one of the main concerns among Swedes as well, the parents really should have gotten her therapy. This is essentially letting her delusions foster, which could lead to actual meltdowns. She now genuinely believe that she's doing a difference when it's already been proven that she's just a pawn. No one gives a shit, not a single politician that she meets gives a shit and this entire thing is genuinely exceptional. This is all quite noticeable in some of her interviews in Sweden (the latest ones), she's just getting worse and seems more irrational and panicked. This isn't activism for her, this is a bonafide battle against the apocalypse to her.

I could be wrong, but I kinda hope I'm not. It's a good dumpster fire worthy popcorn.

Hell, in a few years we could be seeing her join a more literal cult

Obamas run for the 2nd term wasnt as annoying as this shit show...

And White mans burden is nothing new or cringy. If we do nothing, who will do it?
The problem is that its very bigot right now. we have to save the world, and we have to act like subhuman negros, arabs, etc. are our equals and fit to rule themself.

Greta being convinced that she's going to save the world by amoral scumbags really is my only issue. It's very easy to tell yourself that events happening are due to your activism when they would be happening anyway- a great example being that companies are upgrading their buildings to be more energy efficient. Unfortunately, they're doing it mostly to save money, and they're just using environmental claptrap to impress the investors. The side effects are obviously going to be great for the environment and these are positive changes, but Greta didn't do it.

Now, it's not difficult to convince a teenager that they're heroes. She didn't need to have Asperger's to be vulnerable to this sort of thing. She has her own parents telling her that she's a prophet and giving her incentives to become more radical. There's more actors and actresses with autism than you might think so show business isn't necessarily a strange thing for Greta.

It's very abusive though. They told this little autistic girl that the world was going to end and all of her friends were going to die and she believed them, then suffered a meltdown. Well gee, I wonder why she had a mental breakdown.

People with schizophrenia are also vulnerable to that sort of thinking.

lol, keep your relationship problems out of your posts, buddy
what does my relationship have to do with the facts that good female leaders are as rare as unicorns?
can you name more than 2 good ones?

also to make it a bit more clear, only male landowner registered for the draft should be allowed to vote or serve in office.

I believe that would be Cortez. The compulsive lying gives it away. But if she actually believes that she's the mocha messiah is she actually lying?
Stupidity is sometimes the dividing line between wrong and lying. By that metric she's incapable of lying. But also of being right.
